New sports complex, firefighter's funeral, city council meeting...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Still have TikTok on your phone? iPhones with the app installed are selling for thousands on eBay. The user mokeynbandit1 even listed his for $4.9 million.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Firefighter’s funeral

  • New sports complex

  • Monday’s city council meeting

Let’s get to it.

Treat You Day: Coffee’s on Annapolis Mall! ☕✨

You shop, we pour! This Sunday, January 26, from 11 AM – 2 PM, treat yourself to a complimentary cup of coffee at Annapolis Mall.

Here’s how it works: When you spend $100 or more at any Annapolis Mall retailer between Friday (1/24) and Sunday (1/26), then bring your receipt to CPK Court (by lululemon) on Sunday to claim your well-earned treat.

Whether you’re stocking up on essentials or indulging in a little retail therapy, Annapolis Mall wants to say thanks — with coffee, of course. Because you deserve a little “me time” after all that shopping. 💖

THE DIGEST

The biggest things we covered this week

🎙️ Pete Medhurst, the Voice of Navy Athletics, died at the age of 55 after an intense battle with brain cancer. With Pete’s 28 years broadcasting Navy sports and lots of mic time covering sports all over Maryland and DC, his passing sent shockwaves far and wide.

🛍️ The City of Annapolis doesn’t allow retailers to give you plastic bags anymore. They can sell you paper bags for $0.10 a pop, but plastic is out. So put some reusable bags in the car. If you’re anything like me, that’s the only way to remember ‘em. Note: Some businesses are exempt.

Most clicked stories of the week 🏆

Firefighter’s funeral will bring heavy congestion to Ritchie Highway today

Montgomery County Firefighter Lieutenant Chris Higgins’ funeral is today. He died in the line of duty earlier this month. The service starts at 11 AM in Pasadena, followed by a public burial in Glen Burnie at 1:15 PM, then a repast back in Pasadena. There will be hundreds of first responders on Ritchie Highway between Pasadena and Glen Burnie during those times. So if that’s on your commute, try MD 10 or I-97.

🧑‍🚒 Thank you for your service, Chris. And thank you to all firefighters reading this.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Maryland Lacrosse League plans new sports complex 🥍

This update is for sports junkies. Especially laxers. MDLL, one of Maryland’s premier lacrosse programs, is planning a brand new complex in Anne Arundel County. It’ll have a state-of-the-art turf field and indoor facility. And they want to build pickleball courts, golf simulators, and more to create a community hub.

A physical therapy group is already on board for on-site recovery and performance services. MDLL wants 1–2 more partners to bring this to life. If you’re a local business, organization, or individual interested in collaborating, email [email protected] to make it happen.

Polymath Performs the Perfect Philharmonia

Netanel Draiblate is a commercial airline captain for Endeavor Air. He’s also the founder of the Annapolis Symphony Academy. And he’s concert master of the ASO. Don’t miss his performance under the baton of Conductor JosĂŠ-Luis Novo, January 31 and February 1 at Maryland Hall or February 2 at Strathmore. Why buy tickets right now?

  • Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Overture from The Song of Hiawatha – a piece that was more popular than Handel’s Messiah for years after it premiered!

  • Saint-SaĂŤns’ Violin Concerto No. 3  – a dramatic tribute to the Romantic age of violin virtuosos, with Nati performing as violin soloist.

  • Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition – A bridge between music and visual art. Don’t miss the accompanying exhibition by APEXArts students at Maryland Hall.

The Season 63 Masterworks Series is made possible by the Brian and Patricia Giese Foundation.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Survey Results: What kinds of events do y’all want us to run?

So it looks like we might do some speed dating. Lots of y’all said that sounded interesting. We’re also thinking about outdoor movies, wine tastings, and even some boat charters once the weather warms up. First things first, if you’re interested in knowing about speed dating before the rest of the Scoop, click here to let us know.

Last call: Do Portugal Circus 🎪

Unless you’re planning to run away with the circus (and hey, we won’t stop you — it might be fun!) this weekend is your last chance to catch Do Portugal Circus before it packs up and heads out of town (next stop: Philly. I heard the crew wants cheesesteaks). There are shows tonight at 7:30 PM, tomorrow at 2 PM, 5 PM, and 8 PM, and Sunday at 2 PM and 5 PM, all under the big top in the Annapolis Mall parking lot. Get tickets.

Local By Design Artisan’s Market

It’s not gonna be as cold as it’s been, but it still won’t be warm this weekend. So finding something to do inside with good friends is key. We’re heading to Local By Design’s gallery on Margaret Ave to check out their multi-room collection. Adult bevvies and all-ages snacks will be provided, so get a good group of good friends and make it an event. 1818 Margaret Ave.

Huge news. Shamrock the Dock is officially happening in 2025

Did you shed a wee tear or two reading that Shamrock the Dock was on hiatus due to the City Dock expansion? We sure did writing it. Well, we have some bangin’ good news for ya. Due to construction delays, we get to have a one-day-only party at Susan Campbell Park on parade day.

Long-time parade organizer John O’Leary managed to get We’re Not Handsome, Galway Build, and hometown favorite Dublin 5 on short notice. And to soak up the Guinness . . . Picante, Cousin’s Maine Lobster, and another hometown favorite, Timber Pizza. Tickets are under $20 but here’s the rub. There’s not nearly as much space as last year and it’s hard to overstate how popular this is. Scoop recommends getting tickets now. Like today. We already have ours.
