THE DIGEST
Ship that collapsed Key Bridge back at sea
10 months ago, the Dali, lost power and smashed into the Key Bridge in Baltimore. The bridge collapsed instantly. And last week after extensive repairs in China, the ship was back at sea. The Key Bridge will come back too, itâll just take a whole lot longer. Congress has already approved full funding for the project which is expected to be done by October 2028. ($)
Why the Severn River Association is so focused on Weems Creek
The National Park Service took a special interest in Weems Creek back in 1982, considering the waterway an untouched estuary that could catch the eye of environmental activists. But, development got to the watershed first.
Route 50 was expanded
Over 1,000 townhomes were built on Bestgate Road
Annapolis Mall was built as well as Luminis Healthâs 57-acre hospital campus
35 years later, Weems Creek is the fourth-most polluted tributary of the Severn River. Which is why the Severn River Association is so focused on it. In October, the group revealed its action plan for Weems. The watershed is only 1 square miles but is highly developed, with more than 40% of the area listed as impervious, meaning runoff (and pollution) levels are high. Rick Hutzell at the Baltimore Banner just dug into the background in his latest piece. Check it out.
Save the date: Greenscape đ±
Itâs never too early to start thinking about ways to beautify our city, and as of yesterday, weâre officially 3 months out from Greenscape, set for April 26. Itâs a city-wide day of tending to flower and vegetable gardens throughout Annapolis. The City provides plant materials, mulch, trash bags, and gloves. Everyone else provides the sweat. There are two upcoming info sessions on Feb. 5 and March 5 at 6 PM at the Pip Moyer Center. Canât make it to the meetings? You can still download a plant order form online.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Capo Deli owner explains Annapolis delay đ„Ș
Capo Deli is stuck in a pickle . . . The D.C.-based sandwich chain hoped to open at 139 Main Street (formerly Jimmy Johnâs) last year, but a lack of permits and a âstop workâ order slowed their roll. Owner Brian Vasile admitted the oversight while working to iron out the red tape. It takes 4â6 weeks to get Planning and Zoning department comments followed by lots of back and forth. With hopes to be serving subs by St. Patrickâs Day, Vasileâs eager to bring the chainâs flavor to Annapolis. According to city records, a re-inspection is planned for January 31. ($)
