Get the plants you want and skip the lines

Hey you. Want early access to Historic Annapolis’ 51st Annual William Paca Garden Plant Sale? Thought so. Let me tell you a secret.

Not only do Historic Annapolis members get in 30 minutes early, they also get 10% off

Memberships start at just $50, last a whole year, and have way more perks than the Plant Sale but that is one of the most popular. And your membership helps support all the great work HA does in our community.

This year’s Plant Sale features Maryland’s best native plants like Byzantine Gladiolus and heirloom veggies and herbs, and so much more! So mark your calendars for Mother’s Day weekend. The 51st Annual William Paca Garden Plant Sale is happening May 10–11.

THE DIGEST

Parren J. Mitchell Monument to be unveiled this month

Maryland’s first Black congressman, Parren J. Mitchell, will receive an honorary monument later this month. The influential politician, who was elected in 1971 and served as chair of the House Small Business Committee, passed in 2007, leaving a significant legacy in his wake. Mitchell was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, a champion for affirmative action, and a stalwart advocate for affordable housing. The monument, which will feature three black granite tablets presenting Mitchell’s biography, is set to be installed at the Pip Moyer Rec Center on May 28. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS

Yoga Factory Arnold is opening this weekend 🎀 ✂️

Our friends at Yoga Factory are stretching! Oh, we mean growing! On May 3 from 8:30 to 9 AM, it’s time to pose for a ribbon cutting at their new Arnold location (1460 Ritchie Hwy, Suite 205). Then, you can tour the studio, learn about their hot lineup of 10 yoga styles, and enjoy free classes all day long. Yoga Factory’s motto is “We love having you here” and as a (very) occasional student, I can say firsthand that’s true. 🧘‍♀️

You don’t need medicine. You need to stretch.

Don’t take it from us. Take it from the Washington Post. As reported by health and wellness columnist Gretchen Reynolds, “If your body is flexible, you’re likely to live longer than someone whose body and joints are tight and rigid, according to the first, large-scale study of the links between flexibility and mortality.” In the study by Claudio Gil S. Araujo, 3,139 men and women between ages 46 and 65 completed an evaluation of overall flexibility.

Researchers followed them for more than a decade. They found that people with the stiffest joints — especially women — were substantially more likely to die prematurely than those with greater flexibility.

Assisted stretching decreases pain, improves posture and mobility, and increases longevity. One Scoop reader said StretchMed Annapolis literally changed his life. So what are you waiting for? Book your no-cost intro stretch today.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Catfish are wrecking the Bay — so let’s eat ‘em. They’re malicious yet delicious. 🐟 Join award-winning chefs, jam out to live music, sip cocktails, and watch cooking demos at this deliciously eco-friendly party. $55 gets you in. May 3, noon to 4 PM at Annapolis Maritime Museum’s Park Campus.

May Day 💐🧺

May Day, May Day! No, this isn’t a distress call. Although, today, the early bird gets the best May Day basket photos. 📸 We’re talking about the 70-year tradition where Annapolis bursts into bloom, with flowers adorning homes and businesses.🌷🌼🪻

Green-thumb competitors: place baskets outside by 10 AM with your name and address. Kids 12 and under can also join the fun — just add their age. Residents need traditional baskets. Businesses can create floral displays tied to their trade. The Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne will judge displays in the Historic District and parts of Murray Hill. Adult blue-ribbon winners earn an invite to the May Day Tea on May 6.

You don’t have to be an official judge to stroll and pick your favs. Remember to share pics with @NaptownScoop!
