THE DIGEST
As some of you know, I recently became a dog person. So it gives me great pleasure to introduce the first voting round of Mutt Madness 2025. Weâre embarking on an adorable journey through six rounds of voting to crown Annapolisâ favorite dog. Round 1 starts now and ends Wednesday morning at 5:59 AM, at which point round 2 begins. So on and so forth until we have a winner. Enough from me. Get to voting and have fun.
City Dock project gets final city approvals*
The Annapolis Historic Preservation Commission approved a site plan for Annapolisâ new Maritime Welcome Center. The first floor will house Visit Annapolis & Anne Arundel County, educational areas, water access, a watermenâs co-op, and a lounge. The second floor will house the new harbormasterâs office and a public viewing deck.
*So why the asterisk? Because this is just the final city approval for the project. Annapolis still needs approval from the Maryland Historical Trust and new underground utilities before setting a construction date. ($)
Annapolis Almanac: Tales From Our Past

Check out this 1960 photo. What difference do you spot from today? If you recognize the William Paca House, youâre probably wondering where the garden is. Thatâs because the garden was a hotel and parking lot, years away from its former glory.
MD Governor William Paca built the eponymously named house in the 1760s. In 1901, tennis champ William Larned turned it into one of the finest hotels in Annapolis, Carvel Hall. By the 1960s, developers planned to demolish it. Good thing Historic Annapolis stepped in.
HA and the state of Maryland bought the house and garden and spent 10 years painstakingly restoring it based on archeological digs and a 1772 painting by artist Charles Willson Peale.
Fundraiser Focus đ
A relatively recent addition to the local nonprofit scene is Boundless Edventures, which was formed in 2022 to bring adventure therapy to help teens break through social, emotional, physical, and intellectual barriers. By getting out of the house and out in nature â whether itâs on a sailboat or a hiking trail â kids gain confidence, form friendships, and challenge themselves.
đŠ Boundless has its big fundraiser coming up this month. March 22 is their Mad Hatter Dinner Party at the Annapolis Lodge. From 7â10 PM, guests will enjoy an evening of Wonderlandish whimsy, complete with drinks, treats, music, an auction, and poker tournament. Be sure to come dressed to impress with your favorite stylish or outlandish hat! Get tickets.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Arhaus now open at Beacon Square đď¸
If youâve driven Riva Road lately, youâve probably noticed the striking new modern building at Beacon Square. Itâs an Arhaus â a furniture store with a motto we love: Furniture and dĂŠcor should be sustainably sourced, lovingly made, and built to last. Itâs not new in Annapolis; they had a location at Annapolis Town Center for years. But with a brand new building and tremendous frontage on Riva Road, they decided to move across the street.
đ˘ Curious about Beacon Square? Lauren wrote all about it this summer!

SPONSORED BY STRETCHMED
You donât need medicine. You need to stretch.
Donât take it from us. Take it from the Washington Post. As reported by health and wellness columnist Gretchen Reynolds, âIf your body is flexible, youâre likely to live longer than someone whose body and joints are tight and rigid, according to the first, large-scale study of the links between flexibility and mortality.â In the study by Claudio Gil S. Araujo, 3,139 men and women between ages 46 and 65 completed an evaluation of overall flexibility. Researchers followed them for more than a decade. They found that people with the stiffest joints â especially women â were substantially more likely to die prematurely than those with greater flexibility. Assisted stretching decreases pain, improves posture and mobility, and increases longevity. One Scoop reader said StretchMed Annapolis literally changed his life. So what are you waiting for? Book your no-cost intro stretch today.

Tickets for Annapolis Cup on sale today đď¸
This is not a (croquet) drill. Tickets for the 41st Annapolis Cup on April 5 are on sale now! As in years past, the cherished event â a real hit at St. Johnâs campus â will likely sell out fast.
Legend has it the rivalry began in the early 1980s when the U.S. Naval Academy commandant remarked to a St. Johnâs freshman that the Midshipmen could beat the Johnnies in any sport. âWhat about croquet?â the Johnnie retorted. Fast-forward to today, St. Johnâs leads the series 32-8 and approximately 4,000 people will gather for the friendly-but-fierce showdown.
Donât delay â grab tickets!

Our Midshipmen already knew who theyâd be playing in 2025, but they didnât know when or where. Now, they do. And the first seven weeks work greatly in their favor. Five of the first seven games are home. And they only have one instance of back-to-back road games. The greatest rivalry in all of sports, Army-Navy, is also close once again. This year itâs at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
