THE DIGEST

As some of you know, I recently became a dog person. So it gives me great pleasure to introduce the first voting round of Mutt Madness 2025. We’re embarking on an adorable journey through six rounds of voting to crown Annapolis’ favorite dog. Round 1 starts now and ends Wednesday morning at 5:59 AM, at which point round 2 begins. So on and so forth until we have a winner. Enough from me. Get to voting and have fun.

City Dock project gets final city approvals*

The Annapolis Historic Preservation Commission approved a site plan for Annapolis’ new Maritime Welcome Center. The first floor will house Visit Annapolis & Anne Arundel County, educational areas, water access, a watermen’s co-op, and a lounge. The second floor will house the new harbormaster’s office and a public viewing deck.

*So why the asterisk? Because this is just the final city approval for the project. Annapolis still needs approval from the Maryland Historical Trust and new underground utilities before setting a construction date. ($)

Annapolis Almanac: Tales From Our Past

Check out this 1960 photo. What difference do you spot from today? If you recognize the William Paca House, you’re probably wondering where the garden is. That’s because the garden was a hotel and parking lot, years away from its former glory.

MD Governor William Paca built the eponymously named house in the 1760s. In 1901, tennis champ William Larned turned it into one of the finest hotels in Annapolis, Carvel Hall. By the 1960s, developers planned to demolish it. Good thing Historic Annapolis stepped in.

HA and the state of Maryland bought the house and garden and spent 10 years painstakingly restoring it based on archeological digs and a 1772 painting by artist Charles Willson Peale.

Fundraiser Focus 🔍

A relatively recent addition to the local nonprofit scene is Boundless Edventures, which was formed in 2022 to bring adventure therapy to help teens break through social, emotional, physical, and intellectual barriers. By getting out of the house and out in nature — whether it’s on a sailboat or a hiking trail — kids gain confidence, form friendships, and challenge themselves.

🎩 Boundless has its big fundraiser coming up this month. March 22 is their Mad Hatter Dinner Party at the Annapolis Lodge. From 7–10 PM, guests will enjoy an evening of Wonderlandish whimsy, complete with drinks, treats, music, an auction, and poker tournament. Be sure to come dressed to impress with your favorite stylish or outlandish hat! Get tickets.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Arhaus now open at Beacon Square 🛋️

If you’ve driven Riva Road lately, you’ve probably noticed the striking new modern building at Beacon Square. It’s an Arhaus – a furniture store with a motto we love: Furniture and dĂŠcor should be sustainably sourced, lovingly made, and built to last. It’s not new in Annapolis; they had a location at Annapolis Town Center for years. But with a brand new building and tremendous frontage on Riva Road, they decided to move across the street.

🏢 Curious about Beacon Square? Lauren wrote all about it this summer!

You don’t need medicine. You need to stretch.

Don’t take it from us. Take it from the Washington Post. As reported by health and wellness columnist Gretchen Reynolds, “If your body is flexible, you’re likely to live longer than someone whose body and joints are tight and rigid, according to the first, large-scale study of the links between flexibility and mortality.” In the study by Claudio Gil S. Araujo, 3,139 men and women between ages 46 and 65 completed an evaluation of overall flexibility. Researchers followed them for more than a decade. They found that people with the stiffest joints — especially women — were substantially more likely to die prematurely than those with greater flexibility. Assisted stretching decreases pain, improves posture and mobility, and increases longevity. One Scoop reader said StretchMed Annapolis literally changed his life. So what are you waiting for? WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Scoop’s favorite events happening in March

We don’t know about you, but we’re super pumped to come out of winter hibernation. What better way to celebrate than with these March must-dos?!

March 9: St. Patrick’s Parade & Shamrock the Dock

☘️ Stepping off Amos Garrett Blvd at 1 PM, the parade marches down West and Main Streets to City Dock. Shamrock the Dock keeps the party going with live music starting at 2:30 PM. Tickets are sold out!

March 22: Annapolis Maritime Museum Oyster Roast and Sock Burning

🧦 Lucky enough to get tickets? Say sayonara to your socks from 12–4 PM and officially welcome spring and boating season. ☔️ Rain date is March 23, same time (because soggy socks don’t burn).

It’s the First Wildberry Farm Market of Spring!

One of the surest signs of spring is the opening of Wildberry Farm Market, our favorite farmers’ market/pop-up shop featuring delicious food, local artists, and some of the nicest people around. This weekend’s market promises yoga, food trucks, vintage and handmade finds, and so much more. And while you’re there, don’t forget to pick up a dozen rainbow eggs. They’re the best around. 9 AM–noon, Saturday, March 8. 1047 Saint Stephens Church Road in Crownsville.

Tickets for Annapolis Cup on sale today 🎟️

This is not a (croquet) drill. Tickets for the 41st Annapolis Cup on April 5 are on sale now! As in years past, the cherished event — a real hit at St. John’s campus — will likely sell out fast.

Legend has it the rivalry began in the early 1980s when the U.S. Naval Academy commandant remarked to a St. John’s freshman that the Midshipmen could beat the Johnnies in any sport. “What about croquet?” the Johnnie retorted. Fast-forward to today, St. John’s leads the series 32-8 and approximately 4,000 people will gather for the friendly-but-fierce showdown.

Don’t delay — grab tickets!

CIVIL NEWS

⚖️ County Council Meeting

The County Council will meet tonight at 7 PM at the Arundel Center (44 Calvert Street, Annapolis) with an agenda to discuss development requirements, the Region 9 Plan, the supplementary appropriation and transfer of funds within the Board of Education, and more. See the full agenda and sign up to give testimony if compelled. Note that this meeting will not be livestreamed through the county website (because of the ongoing “cyber incident”), but you can catch it on TV.

2️⃣ $18,500 – current salary (29%)
3️⃣ $32,000 – as proposed by the bill in question (21%)

Our Midshipmen already knew who they’d be playing in 2025, but they didn’t know when or where. Now, they do. And the first seven weeks work greatly in their favor. Five of the first seven games are home. And they only have one instance of back-to-back road games. The greatest rivalry in all of sports, Army-Navy, is also close once again. This year it’s at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

Want to watch? Priority ticket sales are live now. Tickets for the general public go on sale May 12. All the info needed is right here.
