Whatās the State of Education in Anne Arundel County
ICE in schools, DEI removals, Redistricting. AACPS Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell covered a lot of ground on Tuesday night in his āState of Educationā speech at a Caucus of African American Leaders event.
Dr. Bedell said heās been in contact with ICEās Maryland director who assured him that ICE will not be doing āadministrative immigration enforcementā in schools. The superintendent also reference President Trumpās executive order pulling federal funding unless schools remove DEI programs.
Federal funding makes up 3% of AACPSā budget.
Chief Academic Officer Christina Catalano said AACPS wonāt be making any changes and Dr. Bedell said, āIf youāre doing it right, you donāt have to name it.ā

LOCAL BUSINESS
Bayside Inn closes š¦
Loyal customers suffered a little shell shock earlier this week when they saw a āBusiness Is Closedā sign on the door of Bayside Inn Crab House. The 54-year-old restaurant, which sold to new owners in 2023 after founder Paul Carlow died, gave little to no warning of plans to close, leaving workers out of a job with no notice and many customers disappointed. A farewell note went up on the business Facebook page, but after the comments got spicier than a generous spoonful of Old Bay, the post came down again. It was later shared on the personal page of an Edgewater resident, thanking the restaurantās crew for carrying on Paulās legacy and the community for supporting the business over the years.

This year, students took a walk on the wild side and designed and built zoo exhibits made entirely out of cardboard and then showcased their creations during a student-led expo.
