In todayā€™s Naptown Scoop:

  • Bayside Inn closes

  • St. Patrickā€™s Parade

THE DIGEST

The biggest stories we covered this week

šŸ§‘ā€šŸŽ“ 5 AACPS students are finalists to be next yearā€™s student member of the board of education. Itā€™s not just a resume booster; thereā€™s real power at stake. Anne Arundelā€™s student board member is the only one in the entire USA with full voting rights. Three of the finalists will debate it out on April 9.

āš“ The new Maritime Welcome Center got its final City of Annapolis approvals from the Historic Preservation Commission. It still needs approval from the Maryland Historical Trust and new underground utilities before weā€™ll know a construction date.

šŸˆ Navy football received its 2025 schedule and 5 of the first 7 games are home.

Whatā€™s the State of Education in Anne Arundel County

ICE in schools, DEI removals, Redistricting. AACPS Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell covered a lot of ground on Tuesday night in his ā€œState of Educationā€ speech at a Caucus of African American Leaders event.

Dr. Bedell said heā€™s been in contact with ICEā€™s Maryland director who assured him that ICE will not be doing ā€œadministrative immigration enforcementā€ in schools. The superintendent also reference President Trumpā€™s executive order pulling federal funding unless schools remove DEI programs.

  • Federal funding makes up 3% of AACPSā€™ budget.

Chief Academic Officer Christina Catalano said AACPS wonā€™t be making any changes and Dr. Bedell said, ā€œIf youā€™re doing it right, you donā€™t have to name it.ā€

LOCAL BUSINESS

Bayside Inn closes šŸ¦€

Loyal customers suffered a little shell shock earlier this week when they saw a ā€œBusiness Is Closedā€ sign on the door of Bayside Inn Crab House. The 54-year-old restaurant, which sold to new owners in 2023 after founder Paul Carlow died, gave little to no warning of plans to close, leaving workers out of a job with no notice and many customers disappointed. A farewell note went up on the business Facebook page, but after the comments got spicier than a generous spoonful of Old Bay, the post came down again. It was later shared on the personal page of an Edgewater resident, thanking the restaurantā€™s crew for carrying on Paulā€™s legacy and the community for supporting the business over the years.

At St. Anneā€™s School, we do things a little differently. Here, students have many opportunities to engage in hands-on learning and projects every day, and particularly on Design Dazeā€“days dedicated to collaborative, project-based, STEAM-filled fun! This year, students took a walk on the wild side and designed and built zoo exhibits made entirely out of cardboard and then showcased their creations during a student-led expo.

Mutt Madness: Letā€™s start Round 3 šŸŽ¾ šŸ¦“

We really hope your internet connection can handle cuteness overload because thatā€™s the only downside of our Mutt Madness contest. The decision between these adorable puppers was ruff during the first round ā€” but here in round 3, itā€™s getting downright impawsible. Even still, weā€™re calling on you to help us make fetch happen and name a winner of Mutt Madness. Cast your votes now in round 3 and encourage all your fellow dog lovers (i.e. everyone, because who doesnā€™t love dogs?) to vote as well. Weā€™re getting close to naming the cutest pup in Annapolis!
