Blood, sweat, and spinning gears, the Eagle in Annapolis 🦅, Murder Mystery...

Good morning, Annapolis. What’s the best April Fool’s prank you’ve ever seen? Asking for a friend 😈

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Annapolitan finishes Great Loop

  • Time to think about May Day

  • College scholarships

Let’s get to it.

— Ryan “a friend“ Sneddon

P.S. Happy Birthday to Shannon Fleishman!

We tried L’Antico Gusto Italiano 🇮🇹

#8 Pastrami Sandwich

As promised, I visited Westfield Annapolis yesterday to report on the newest food court restaurant, L’Antico Gusto Italiano. It means the ancient Italian taste btw.

That’s the #8 pastrami sandwich above. It was good. But I liked the #10 chipped beef even better. Such a simple, beautiful sandwich.

The verdict? Solid new option. I didn’t try any salads but I bet they’re great. Everything was fresh. They slice the meat right in front of you. And they have those delicious, flavored Sanpellegrino drinks. See all 6 photos – including the menu.

Don’t miss the Hot Spring Sellers Market

It’s a great time to sell your home. High interest rates aren’t stopping buyers. What’s bothering buyers is low inventory, which happens to be excellent for sellers. High demand and low supply create high prices. It’s Economics 101.

Brad Kappel is getting his clients 99% of asking price in 2 days on average.

Take the Severna Park waterfront home pictured above. Brad did 12 showings, got 4 offers, and sold it for over asking price. Needless to say, the sellers were thrilled.

Spring’s always a hot time to sell and it’s just getting started. For those seeking the exceptional, Make Your Move with Brad Kappel.

Quick Hits

Two scholarships up for grabs

With college prices making students google “How much for a kidney on the black market?” extra dough always helps. That’s why two local groups are coming to your (financial) aid.

  • The Rotary Club of Annapolis is offering four $2,500 scholarships to students who have demonstrated a commitment to community service. Apply by April 1.

  • The Annapolis Arts Alliance is offering four $1,500 scholarships to students planning to pursue a degree in the arts. Apply by May 20.

Note: Both scholarships require the winners to live in Anne Arundel County. The Rotary’s has specific ZIP code requirements.

Annapolitan finishes Great Loop

9.5 months ago, Matthew Korbelak left Saltworks Creek in a 27-foot motor sailor for the journey of a lifetime – The Great Loop. An epic 6,000-mile trip on the Chesapeake Bay, Intracoastal Waterway, New York canals, Great Lakes, Mississippi River, and the Gulf Coast. Only about 150 people complete the Loop each year, earning the nickname “Loopers.” That’s less than climb Mt. Everest. Way less.

Matthew became one of those 150 with a safe return to Saltworks Creek last Friday. Congratulations, Matthew!

Five students in running for SMOB seat

Did you know Anne Arundel County’s student Board of Education member is the only one in the nation with full voting rights? Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils (aka CRASC) announced its 5 nominees for the 2023–2024 seat Monday. All are juniors at their respective schools.

  • Indu Bodala – Glen Burnie HS

  • Peter Chiweshe – Broadneck HS

  • Erin Lin – Severna Park HS

  • Sophia Nwanze – Crofton HS

  • Taryn Reinhart – Annapolis HS

Students must apply by Monday. Then the field will be narrowed to 3. They’ll debate in april and CRASC delegates will vote later that month.

The Eagle flies through Annapolis 🦅

📸 @motoxdms | 📍Chesapeake Bay Bridge

Some facts about the USCGC Eagle:

🦅 She’s 295 feet long
🦅 6 other Coast Guard cutters have been named Eagle dating back to 1792
🦅 She’s used to train future Coast Guard officers
🦅 She was commissioned in Nazi Germany in 1936. Hitler was present for her launch. The British captured her during WW2 and the US won her by drawing lots after The Allies won.

Local Business

35 years of blood, sweat, and spinning gears

Congratulations to Bike Doctor of Arnold and owner Stephen Ruck for being in business for 35 years! Speaking of bikes . . . .

After a cold (but not very snowy 😡 ) winter, Annapolis Bike Parties are back tomorrow. Meet at Acton Cove at 7:30 PM for a leisurely ride around town. Wheels roll at 7:45 PM. I dare you to spray paint your bike green. This happens on the third Thursday of every month except October because of Halloween.

Get your Scoop gear at HERE before it’s gone

HERE. a pop-up shop is the only place in Annapolis to buy Naptown Scoop gear and it’s closing this Sunday. It will pop up again in a few short months with fresh Scoop gear. But if you want to support Scoop this spring, we highly recommend you visit 4 Church Circle between 10 AM–6 PM ASAP. Look for the neon sign!

What’s Happenin’

Murder Mystery

This is for everyone who loves Sherlock Holmes a little too much. Btw, Fake British accents and eccentricities look good on Robert Downey Jr., not you. Rams Head On Stage is straying from its usual concerts for a murder mystery trivia night tonight. It’s going to be funny (hosted by comedians), interactive (you could be the murderer), and Rams Head serves food. So next time someone says, “Never have I ever been to a murder mystery dinner” when you’re playing Never Have I Ever, keep your drink down.

May Day: Start preparing now!

It may not feel like spring now but May 1st will be here before you can say, “Annapolis gets so crowded with tourists when it’s warm.” May 1st means one of my favorite Annapolis traditions – the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne’s May basket contest. Here’s how it works.

Residents arrange flowers in a basket including a card with their name. Businesses can skip the basket and incorporate something from the biz (e.g. an ice cream shop using a giant cone). Kids have their own category. Arrange flowers in a basket including a card with their name and age.

All displays must be ready by 11 AM on May 1 or they won’t be judged. Blue ribbon winners get invited to May Day Tea on May 4. As we all remember from last year, this is rain-or-shine. What I want to know is . . . will anyone beat 134 Prince?

Civil News

Reminder: City Hall is closed today

City Hall is closed for electrical upgrades today. Most notably, this means the Finance Counter is closed. You can make your payments online or through the mail slot left of the front door using checks or money orders only in sealed envelopes. No other City facilities are closed.

City Council confirms Roslyn Johnson

Roslyn Johnson is officially Annapolis’ new Recreation and Parks Director. City Council confirmed her 6–1 on Monday. Only Rhonda Pindell Charles voted no. She supported former director Archie Trader and said her vote was “about the process, not personal.” Mayor Buckley appointed Roslyn without publicly soliciting for the role – something allowed by city regulations but not popular. PSA: Don’t keep valuables in your cars

We’ve noticed lots of thefts from cars in police reports recently. Not cheap stuff either – phones, cameras, purses. Here are some tips to protect your stuff:

  • Roll up the windows and lock the doors. You may say, “Elementary, my dear Scoop” BUT, most car break-ins happen to unlocked cars.

  • Don’t leave anything visible through the windows.

  • Stow stuff in the trunk before you arrive. Sophisticated thieves watch parking lots to see what people want to protect.

  • Easiest and most effective of all, don’t keep valuables in your car. They can’t steal what’s not there.

Well this is ironic

Senators, Representatives, County Executives, and other politicians gathered at the Market House Monday to celebrate $3.5 million in federal funding for the City Dock revitalization project. The project will not only beautify City Dock but also protect it against rising sea levels. Ironic at the on the day of the press conference, it flooded so badly and the team wanted an upgrade.

  • Notably, Monday is the first time Mayor Buckley’s given a start date for visible progress at City Dock (planning’s been underway since his first term). They’ll start after boat shows. ($)

Hope is all we have

There’s no cure for Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA). But the FDA just approved a breakthrough treatment that can slow the disease by 50%! That’s why this year’s Night to Fight FA is even more special to the Burrows Hill Foundation. The foundation has raised more than 700,000 dollars to fund FA research. We’ll be joining them on April 15 for the fifth annual Night to Fight to raise even more and hope you will too.*
