TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Today’s newsletter is dedicated to the police officers, firefighters, and EMTs who didn’t work in Manhattan or D.C. but when everyone was escaping from the terrorist attacks of 9/11, they charged in and risked their lives to save people they didn’t even know.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Market House crabcake review

  • Paddleboard races

  • Dates you’ll want to save

Let’s get to it.

Naval Academy Alumni Foundation opens new HQ

SECNAV Carlos Del Toro speaks at the Fluegel Alumni Center opening Friday (9/8)

If you’ve been wondering what the stately new brick building on King George Street looks like inside, wonder no more. Construction on the Naval Academy Alumni Foundation’s Fluegel Alumni Center is complete and it is gorgeous.

Along with offices for all Alumni Association and Foundation personnel, the Fluegel Alumni Center contains thousands of luxuriously appointed event space available to rent – much of it with unobstructed views of College Creek.

The Fluegel Center cost over $36 million to construct – 100% of which was funded by private donations.

3,500 alumni across 37 graduating classes supported the project.

The building was unveiled in a VIP-packed ceremony on Friday featuring Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, acting Superintendent Rear Adm. Fred Kacher, and namesake donors Rick and Donna Fluegel.

SPONSORED BY MURTHY FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY

Dr. Namita Murthy is pleased to introduce FaceTite. In fact, she’s the only plastic surgeon in Annapolis offering FaceTite. So, what is FaceTite?

Think of FaceTite like a facelift without big incisions.

For a normal facelift, Dr. Murthy cuts in the hairline near your temple and around your ear to the lower scalp. She redistributes fat and tissue, redrapes the skin, and trims the excess. Very safe, but still major surgery.

With FaceTite, Dr. Murthy makes a series of pinhole incisions – so small they don’t even need stitches. She first removes any excess fat and then uses radiofrequency waves (which also stimulate collagen production) to tighten and remodel skin. It’s done under local anesthesia with minimal recovery time.

FaceTite is a major breakthrough in facial contouring. Nothing else this minimally invasive even comes close to matching facelift results the way FaceTite does.

If your face and neck aren’t as tight as you’d like, schedule a comfortable and personalized consultation with Dr. Murthy today.

Also follow Dr. Murthy on Instagram @drnamitamurthy for more information and future specials!

THE DIGEST

Parijita goes to Baltimore 🎙️

Imagine stepping up to a microphone to sing for 70,136 fans. Now imagine doing it when you’re 18 years old. That’s a piece of Smith Island cake for Parijita Bastola, who sang the Star-Spangled Banner at the Baltimore Ravens home yesterday. Which they won btw.

Parijita is a 2022 Severna Park High School graduate and a semifinalist on The Voice. I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot of her.

Calling all Creatives 📸

A cotton candy sunset. A patient pup. A beautiful bouquet. Our town is full of little moments that tell a big story. On that note, Visit Annapolis & Anne Arundel County just opened its photo contest. One winner will have their photo featured in the 2024 Visitors Guide and enjoy other prizes. You have until September 30 to submit.

🔨 Call for mentors

LOCAL BUSINESS

Korean BBQ at Westfield Annapolis

Jongro Korean BBQ opens at Westfield Annapolis today. While the restaurant may be new to us, it’s been popular in South Korea for many years. The first Jongro in America opened in NYC in 2015. Much like an American chain with an iconic red-haired mascot, Jongro’s meat is fresh never frozen. In fact, fresh meat is delivered to the restaurant every single day. Check out the menu.

Jongro is located underneath the movie theatre by the entrance to the food court. Or for local yokels, the old Red Robin.

Market House Crabcake Review 🦀 đŸŽ‚

Captain Chris reprised his role in a Crab Cake Review last week and a special guest joined Ryan last week in Naptown Scoop’s first-ever three-person crab cake review. The crew went to Market House to test Ryan’s theory: If you can see the water from the restaurant, it must have a good crabcake. See how Market House measured up or see the entire ranked list.

Crabcake Reviews are made possible by a generous sponsorship from Blue Heron Property Services – The House Wash Pros.

SPONSORED BY HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE

Hospice of the Chesapeake is meeting you where you are in our community

Just as different communities celebrate life in their own way, they also approach end of life in their own way. Meeting you where you are means reaching out to community centers, business leaders, faith leaders, and more so they can learn what you need from your hometown hospice.

As Maryland’s largest independent nonprofit hospice, they are committed to make hospice, supportive and bereavement care accessible to everyone, regardless of race, gender, age or religion. Like the donated quilts that comfort patients, they are a patchwork of experts celebrating our differences in one beautiful blanket of support.
