Judge rules Annapolisā€™ City Dock construction can proceed

Anne Arundel Circuit Court Judge Michael Malone rejected the anonymous lawsuit thatā€™s been delaying Annapolisā€™ plans for City Dock. The lawsuit stalling the $100 million infrastructure project alleged that the Historic Preservation Commission didnā€™t follow the rules. Judge Malone says it did. So, time to bust out the backhoes and get started right? Well, maybe. . .

Historic Annapolis has a pending lawsuit against the project, mainly the new Maritime Welcome Center and its effect on the historic Burtis House. And FEMA still hasnā€™t approved the $33 million grant thatā€™s critical for the project. The City remains undeterred and plans to start utility work after the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October. Navy AD Chet Gladchuk retiring at the end of spring season

The Naval Academy announced yesterday that longtime athletic director Chet Gladchuk is retiring at the end of the spring semester. But calling Chet a ā€œlongtimeā€ athletic director is like calling Jeff Bezos rich. Heā€™s not just the longest tenured AD ever for Navy. Heā€™s the second-longest tenured in the FBS (the top level of college football). Chetā€™s been at Navy so long thereā€™s only one varsity coach he didnā€™t hire ā€“ womenā€™s soccerā€™s Carin Gabarra.

In 24-year tenure at Navy, Chet put together quite the highlight reel:

šŸ† 4 National Championships, 251 conference titles, 12 Commander-in-Chief trophies, and 21 out of 23 Star Series victories
šŸŸļø $80 million renovation of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium
āš½ Added 6 varsity sports, tying Navy with Stanford and Ohio State for the most in the FBS
šŸˆ Engineered footballā€™s move to the American Athletic Conference after 134 years of independence

We could write so much more but we donā€™t have 24 years worth of digital paper so weā€™ll let Navyā€™s exceptional in-house media team do the rest.

And for the burning question, who will replace him? The Capitalā€™s Bill Wagner put together a long list. ($)

Fair winds and following seas, Chet. You were always good to us at the Scoop and Anchors Aweigh.

Reader Recommendations: Weekend Warriors

ā€œWeekend Warriors Events is a unique business concept and they are fantastic at what they do. Basically they are an ā€œextra handsā€ company, filling a niche void for hosts who donā€™t quite need an event planner, but simply want to be able to enjoy their own parties. Hiring them for our Christmas party allowed me to do exactly that.

Charles checked in multiple times before the party, asking if he could do anything to help prior to the event. He kept a running list of everything we needed picked up (bags of ice, cocktail garnishes, etc.) and even did a final check-in day-of.

He then showed up to party prep and jumped right in, filling every gap you can think of. He carried our extra tables upstairs, helped us finish decorating, got our extra food set up, and more. Then during the party, he kept food replenished and trash cleared out. I basically didnā€™t even have to clean up after the party.

I highly recommend Weekend Warriors for any event or task Scoop readers may need help with!ā€

You donā€™t need medicine. You need to stretch.

Donā€™t take it from us. Take it from the Washington Post. As reported by health and wellness columnist Gretchen Reynolds, ā€œIf your body is flexible, youā€™re likely to live longer than someone whose body and joints are tight and rigid, according to the first, large-scale study of the links between flexibility and mortality.ā€ In the study by Claudio Gil S. Araujo, 3,139 men and women between ages 46 and 65 completed an evaluation of overall flexibility. Researchers followed them for more than a decade. They found that people with the stiffest joints ā€” especially women ā€” were substantially more likely to die prematurely than those with greater flexibility.

Assisted stretching decreases pain, improves posture and mobility, and increases longevity. One Scoop reader said StretchMed Annapolis literally changed his life. So what are you waiting for? Book your no-cost intro stretch today.

WHATā€™S HAPPENINā€™

Theater Talk Tuesday šŸŽ

This week brings an eclectic mix of live performing arts options, from a high school musical to a professional concert. Hereā€™s whatā€™s on the schedule:

šŸ“ St. Maryā€™s High School presents The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee
This hilarious musical pits a group of high-performing spelling bee competitors against one another as they spell ā€” and sing ā€” their way to victory. The show opens this Friday and runs through April 13.

šŸŽ¶ Masterworks V at Maryland Hall
Catch the world premiere of the composition Fiesta by Dr. Roydon Tse and featuring the Dali String Quartet, part of Maryland Hallā€™s Embracing 21st-Century Voices series. The concert runs April 4ā€“5 at 7:30 PM.

šŸŒŽ Naptown Philharmonic Orchestra presents An Earth Day Tribute
To spread environmental awareness through the power of music, these vocalists and instrumentalists will perform a lineup of Earth-themed songs on Sunday at 3 PM.

ASGT tickets now on sale šŸŽŸļø

Thereā€™s a reason Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre tickets sell out quickly: This Annapolis tradition is a summertime staple and high-quality entertainment. And tickets for all 3 summer shows are on sale today, so if you want to make a point of catching a live musical ā€œunder the starsā€ this summer, nowā€™s your chance to choose which show and which evening youā€™ll see it. Hereā€™s whatā€™s on the schedule:

šŸŒŠ Disaster!
This hilarious musical follows an eclectic mix of zany characters aboard a floating casino/disco struck by multiple disasters at once, including earthquakes, tidal waves, and an inferno, all set to the sound of hit ā€˜70s songs.
May 22ā€“June 14

šŸ‘  The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Equal parts bawdy and wholesome, this classic musical centers on a 19th century cozy bordello frequented by men of all statures that becomes the focus of a puritanical TV reporter bent on exposing it.
June 26ā€“July 19

šŸ•³ļø Groundhog Day
Based on the ā€˜80s comedy about a cynical weatherman forced to relive Groundhog Day over and over again, this stage adaptation features upbeat songs by Australian musician Timothy Minchin.
July 31ā€“August 31

Whatā€™s it like to see a show ā€œunder the starsā€? Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre is unique because itā€™s an open-air venue right at City Dock (youā€™ve probably walked past and not even realized itā€™s there). But behind the brick exterior that fits so inconspicuously with the rest of the historic district is an outdoor theater where most audiences make a point of coming year after year. If you canā€™t choose just one show, or you donā€™t know which date works for you, the best bet is to buy a 2025 season ticket.

PlayAnnapolis 2nd Annual Sports Fair šŸ€šŸ‘šŸšŸ©°šŸŽ¾

ā€œWe're gonna try it on. See if it fits. It might not. Then again, it might be a very flattering silhouette. I might wear it right out of the store." ā€“ Ted Lasso

Coach Lasso knows the importance of trying new things. So does PlayAnnapolis, which represents 18 nonprofit orgs serving Annapolis youth. Their second annual Sports Fair is Friday, April 4, 4ā€“6 PM at the Boys & Girls Club Turf field (121 S Villa Ave., Annapolis). This FREE community event brings sports, 20+ exhibitors, fun, and prizes like Annapolis Blues tickets and sports gear. Try volleyball, basketball, field hockey, tennis, and dance. Meet local teams and explore registration and financial aid options. Plus, enjoy a free healthy dinner, snacks, and Kona Ice!
