Anne Arundel County gets AAA rating, SMOB debate, AACPS pre-K shift...
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. The Caps may have lost yesterday but Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal, breaking Wayne Gretzky’s 30+ year record to become the greatest goal-scorer in NHL history. And he’s scored every single one of those goals in a Washington Capitals jersey.
In today’s Naptown Scoop:
Anne Arundel County’s AAA rating
SMOB debate
AACPS pre-K shift
Let’s get to it.

Huge News from Yoga Factory
The May schedule is now live. How is that huge news? I’m glad you asked.
It’s huge because it’s the first schedule including Yoga Factory’s brand new studio in Arnold!
Yoga Factory now has a total of 150, yes, one hundred and fifty classes every week. Not only will this allow more yogis to practice with Yoga Factory, but they’re hoping for fewer waitlisted classes in Annapolis, too.
To book a class, open the Yoga Factory Annapolis app, click book, and scroll to the week of May 5. By the way, all Yoga Factory classes are beginner-friendly (I can personally attest to that) so don’t be afraid to try something new!
Yoga Factory Arnold is located at 1460 Ritchie Hwy Suite 205, Arnold, MD 21012.

THE DIGEST
In 40 years of the Annapolis Cup, Navy had only beaten St. John’s in the iconic croquet match 8 times. But as my dad often says after I hit a good golf shot, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. On Saturday, Navy triumphed over St. John’s by a score of . . . we don’t know because does anyone know how croquet is even scored? Either way, Navy won. Everyone had a good time. And it’s officially spring. Even if it’s barely gonna hit 50º until Thursday.
AACPS Pre-K to focus on 4-year-olds 🖍️
Big news for parents of preschoolers. AACPS is focusing its prekindergarten programming on 4-year-olds, in keeping with new Maryland State Board of Education policy. While this means families of 3-year-olds will need to seek pre-K options elsewhere, 4-year-olds will have expanded options, including some closer to home for high-priority students. These pre-K programs will still be free, and teaching positions for current 3-year-old programs will be converted to 4-year-old programs next year. As for parents with pre-K kiddos, take note: Registration for next school year opens May 6.
SMOB Debate — Wed. at 4:30 PM 🕟
Three finalists for the Student Member of the Board (SMOB) seat on the Board of Education will debate this Wednesday starting at 4:30 PM. For those who’ve been following the race, note the time change (yes, it was originally set for 6:30 PM, but it’s being bumped up because of another event at AACPS’s Parham Building later that evening).
Part of the reason the SMOB race is such a big deal is because Anne Arundel County’s is the only student member of an education board in the U.S. who has full voting rights. This year’s finalists are:
✏️ Michelle Fadele, Chesapeake High School
✏️ Brayden Morgan, Glen Burnie High School
✏️ Jack Warrick, Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter School
A livestream of the debate will be available via the AACPS YouTube channel.

Swimming Back from Paralysis
When Dick Rosenthal retired as athletic director after a lifetime of service to the University of Notre Dame, he was asked about the most memorable moment during his tenure. Without hesitation, the chief of sports at America’s most storied university replied, “Haley Scott.”
This Thursday, national speaker and St. Anne’s School administrator, Haley Scott DeMaria, will be telling her story of triumph over tragedy. When the Notre Dame women’s swim team suffered a fatal bus crash, the lives of those on the bus, their families, and the community were changed forever. Paralyzed after the accident, Haley Scott was told she would never walk again. With the help of her family and teammates, Haley chose a different fate and promised not only to walk, but to swim again for the Fighting Irish.
All are invited to hear Haley share her remarkable journey back from paralysis, the importance of community, and the impact tragedy has on our lives this Thursday, April 10, 9 AM at St. Anne’s School of Annapolis. Register here.

Triple-A Bond Rating for Anne Arundel 💰
Good things come in the threes, and that’s definitely the case for Anne Arundel County. For the third year in a row, the county has earned a Triple-A bond rating from the three major credit agencies Fitch Ratings, Moody’s Investors Service, and S&P Global Ratings. That’s a distinction only 2% of counties across the U.S. can claim. So, what does this mean? It means these credit agencies see a strong financial outlook for Anne Arundel thanks to good money management, budgeting, and business. And from a practical standpoint? The county gets to borrow at the lowest available interest rates, so it will save millions in taxpayer dollars when investing in projects like schools and transportation. Talk about a win-win-win.
