🍦45 years of Annapolis Mall

Our favorite dive bars, crime's down, mystery restaurant...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. We made a few errors in yesterday’s weekend preview.

  • First of all, Food Truck Friday is in Parole, not Eastport.

  • Second, Dinner Under the Stars is Saturday only.

  • And third, the Books for International Goodwill sale is 3–5 PM on Friday and 8 AM – 2 PM on Saturday.

Sorry about that. Carry on.

Crime's down. Do you feel safe?

You don’t read about crime a lot in the Scoop — we focus on community news that doesn’t stress you out. But here’s some positivity for your Friday. YTD crime numbers are down in Anne Arundel. They’re down so far the PD felt compelled to make a special announcement. Specifically, we’ve seen a decrease in:

⬇️ Homicide: down 14%
⬇️ Non-contact shootings: down 42%
⬇️ Carjackings: down 57%
⬇️ Theft from vehicles: down 28%

So, now we want to hear from you.

Do you feel safe in Anne Arundel County?

Annapolis Songwriters Festival announces 2025 venues

We have the what. We have the who. And now, we finally have the where.

The Annapolis Songwriters Festival just announced its 2025 venues. There are a few new spaces ready to welcome new musicians for the four day festival, September 11–14.

Because of City Dock construction, the main stage is heading to Calvert Street. We’re also looking forward to performances at the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum, Capitol Hotel Patio, and of course, Dinner Under the Stars.

Full list: 49 West, Annapolis Visitor’s Center, Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum, Blackwall Hitch, Boatyard Bar & Grill, Calvert Street Stage, Capitol Hotel Patio, Dinner Under the Stars, Galway Bay, Garden on Market Space, Graduate Hotel, King of France Tavern, Maryland Hall, Metropolitan, Rams Head On Stage, Rams Head Tavern, Red Red Wine Bar, Stan & Joe’s, and Watermark Cruises.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Foodie Friday: Our favorite dive bars 🍻

Let’s be real. “Dive bar” isn’t a slur. It’s a badge of honor. When we’re craving a familiar spot with can’t-be-beat atmosphere, we go to one of these three local watering holes.

🦀 🥨 Davis’ Pub: Eastport’s not-so-hidden gem. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives visited Davis’ in 2012. Rightfully so. Their Crab Pretzel is legendary and the bartenders are awesome. Unless you don’t act right. They’ll ban you for life. — 400 Chester Ave

🍤 🍺 📺 Heroes Pub: Jumbo shrimp, 48 beers on tap (yes, tap), and enough satellite TVs to make any sports fan tear up. Plus, they honor first responders and the military. Always a win in our book. — 1 Riverview Ave

🌮🍹Gina’s Cantina: Where it’s loud enough that no one cares if your kids are, too. Come for the sizzlin’ fajitas, quesadillas, and tacos. Stay for the margs to die for. Btw, groups of 10 or more get $50 off their bar tab (min $200 spend). — 8779 Veterans Hwy

Two things we love: restaurants and a good mystery

Look: if you put up a social media post for a restaurant along with the words, “Coming soon,” you need to know that the Scoop Slack is lighting up like a Christmas tree on Black Friday. Will we search LLC registrations, call your former employers, comb through use and occupancy permits, and hit up that one cousin with a LinkedIn Premium subscription? Yes, yes, yes, and yes, even though it means an exceptionally long story about how their kids feel about the new au pair. However: we’re on to you, McGinty’s Grill. Give yourself up and talk.

Happy 45th, Annapolis Mall! 🎂

Where were you 45 years ago this weekend? If you’re old enough to remember, just know we think you don’t look a day over 32. You might have even been at the Annapolis Mall for the grand opening. It happened on this weekend back in 1980. Even the days of the week and numbers match up.

Amazingly, 6 of the original stores are still at the Mall:

🐮 Chick-fil-A (sandwich price: $1.55)
💄 Claire’s
👟 Foot Locker
💎 Kay Jewelers
💎 Zales
✉️ Hallmark

An ownership group that includes Texas-based Centennial Real Estate and former WeWork CEO Sandeep Mathrani currently owns the Mall, having bought it from Westfield for an undisclosed sum. The new owners are bringing a large selection of new stores like Dick’s House of Sport, Dave & Busters, and more.
