Cavalli Opens in Annapolis, Navy hires new Athletic Director, Get ready for hurricane season. . .
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. Mark your calendars for July 10. This is not a drill. It’s not one of those things your cousin “read somewhere” but can’t find the link. It’s real.
We’re talking seismic cultural shift. An announcement so monumental, we considered hiring a skywriter to do it so all of Annapolis could see. In the end though, we decided to just write it here.
McDonald’s is bringing back the Snack Wrap.
In today’s Naptown Scoop:
Cavalli Opens in Annapolis
Navy hires new Athletic Director
Get ready for hurricane season
Let’s get to it.

The biggest stories we covered this week
⚽ The Annapolis Blues men and women each won their first games at home and set their respective league attendance records on the same night. Both teams are playing in a brand new league this year – the men because they moved up to USL League 2; the women because the team’s brand new.
⛵ The NYT wrote a piece entitled 36 Hours in Annapolis that put our little town on the national stage.
💸 Anne Arundel County’s next County Executive will get a 27% pay raise. The current salary is $142k annually; the new one is $180k.

Get ready for hurricane season 🌧️
Most times, being above average is good. But an above average hurricane season? Not one of them. NOAA says hurricane season (which started this week and goes through the end of November) is looking above average
They’re forecasting 13–19 named tropical storms, of which 6–10 could become hurricanes and 3–5 could become major hurricanes.
That means trouble — flooding, high winds, power outages, and other risks. Here's what Kevin Simmons, director of Annapolis Office of Emergency Management, recommends:
✅ Have a family emergency & communication plan.
✅ Build a supply kit with everything you need for an evacuation.
✅ Keep critical documents updated and in a safe place.
✅ Have cash on hand.
✅ Stock up on emergency supplies, including flashlights (with batteries), nonperishable food, and first aid.
✅ Don’t forget about your pets!
✅ Sign up for Alert Annapolis to get emergency notifications via text, call, or email.

St. John’s bids farewell to Nora Demleitner 🏫
It took a lot of people by surprise to hear Nora Demleitner announce she’s leaving St. John’s College. Only three years ago, she stepped into the role of collegewide president (St. John’s has campuses in Maryland and New Mexico) and president of the Annapolis campus. Since 2022, she’s headed numerous initiatives to improve student life and studies. For the broader Annapolis community, Nora has been a significant force by overseeing improvements to the Mitchell Art Museum and Mellon Hall, and forming stronger partnerships with local schools, nonprofits, politicians, and the Naval Academy. She’ll leave St. John’s at the end of this school year. J. Walter Sterling, president of the Santa Fe campus, will step into the role of collegewide president and Suzy Paalman, dean of Annapolis campus, will be Annapolis’ campus president.

Foodie Friday: New(ish) Brunch Spots 🧇🍳🥓
It’s Lauren, but you can call me “brunch dreamer” because I live for mimosas and Eggs Benedict but rarely get to indulge. Well, last weekend, my family tried First Watch at Riva Festival. Aside from still mourning the old Chili’s, it was a tasty experience. Publisher’s note: I second mourning Chili’s. Those chips are to die for.
The portions were big and the prices were reasonable. My Avocado Toast was so fresh and light. And before you say “health nut,” I sampled all three of my kids’ meals and loved their waffles, eggs, bacon, and French Toast.
With First Watch on my radar, I wondered what other brunch spots opened without my noticing. The Lodge Pasadena opened this year and is drawing rave reviews for a “delicious Sunday brunch.” With a Country Fried Chicken and Waffle Station and Farm Fresh Egg Station, it’s easy to see why.

Annapolis Pickleball Club Summer Solstice 😎
Sun’s out, paddles out. To mark the summer solstice, Annapolis Pickleball Club is hosting a day of open play, Italian ice, and light snacks. While June 20 is technically the first day of summer, the real rally is June 21 at Truxton Park (273 Hilltop Lane) from 10 AM to 1 PM. Today’s astronomy lesson: the summer solstice can fall on June 20–22 because Earth's orbit isn't quite in sync with our calendar. The astronomical year is 365.25 days long, so the solstice shifts by about six hours each year. Register now. Drop-ins welcome. BYO chair — and prepare to have a smashing good time!

Michael Kelly has been named the new President of the USNA Athletic Association and Director of Athletics for the Academy. Kelly comes to Annapolis via the University of South Florida, where he was VP of Athletics for seven years. In Tampa, he nearly doubled his department’s budget, expanded varsity sports offerings, celebrated 21 American Athletic Conference team championships, two divisional titles, two NCAA Championships, and much more. We can’t wait to see what he does with the Midshipmen - especially because it was announced yesterday that Navy will open the 2029 football season with a game against Ohio State. We have four years to get ourselves ready - let’s get ‘er done, Mr. Kelly.
