100 miles for Parkinson’s research 🏃🏻‍♂️

Today is World Parkinson’s Day and three local men are taking steps — quite a lot of them — to raise money for prevention research. Nick Manis, Jeff Begin, and LJ Urie set out this morning to run 100 miles across the Eastern Shore from Centreville to Ocean City. The purpose behind this ultimate challenge? Honoring Nick’s uncle Bryan Adam, a Severna Park resident lost to Parkinson’s in 2023. And raising money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. We caught up with Nick, Jeff, and LJ during training to hear the why behind something this big. Here’s what they shared with us.

Annapolis 🤝 Washington Capitals

Given our proximity to DC, it makes sense to root for the Caps. But some Annapolitans have connections beyond fandom. Like Craig Leydig, better known as Woody – the Caps equipment manager. Over the past 20 years, he’s been a personal friend to star player Alex Ovechkin, who scored his 895th goal last weekend and officially made history as leading goal-scorer in the NHL. And yes, Woody was on the bench for all 895 goals. . . ($)

Another local Caps connection is Tom Morris – owner of Chesapeake Car Wash by day. He moonlights as the Caps statistician.

Four AACPS Students Named National Merit Finalists

Heya, Smarty Pants!

Anne Arundel County has four high school students in the running for National Merit Scholarships – awarded to 6,800 students each year based on PSAT/SAT scores. It’s so impressive that even being considered is a big deal. So huge congratulations to:

  • Daniel Garrett, Arundel High School

  • Abbie Heath, Severna Park High School

  • Peter Judge, Severna Park High School

  • Nikita Mehta, South River High School

Waterworks Park is getting a glow up

The City of Annapolis recently announced it’s working with Beatty Development Group to enhance Waterworks Park on Defense Highway. Natural ecosystem restoration, preservation of historic structures, and enhancing trails are all on the agenda, with a plan to make the park a hiking and biking destination. Back in 2019, Mid-Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts cut more than 11 miles of trails in the park, connecting it with Bacon Ridge Natural Area and putting it on Annapolis’ outdoor recreation map.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Foodie Friday: Under the Radar Restaurants 🦀🍰🧀🍷🥨🐙

At the risk of making our faves more crowded, we’re sharing some spots that fly under the radar. Enjoy!

Lures Bar and Grille | 1397 Generals Hwy | Tucked away in Crownsville, this neighborhood spot has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The Crab Cake Sandwich, Crab Dip, and Fried Pickles are staples but everything is top notch. Feeling adventurous? Try the Crab Deviled Eggs. Save room for Smith Island Cake! And the beer selection is among the best in town.

Garten | 849 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd in Severna Park | This natural wine and beer garden is worth the short drive from Annapolis. The chef and bar manager hail from Preserve on Main Street and have recreated Preserve’s magic in a new way.

Garten blends German and French flavors with cheese and charcuterie boards, kebab, schnitzel, fresh garden veggies, housemade pastas, and pretzels to boot. The Brie-wich is a crowd pleaser! Fridays feature DJs, Sundays bring Jazz Brunch. Note: they’re closed on Mondays.

The Goat | 137 Prince George St | This newer DTA spot is quickly building a great reputation for comfort food, cocktails, and beer in an easygoing setting. The menu is bursting with flavor from dishes like Jalapeño Poppers, Red Snapper Ceviche, and Octopus 🐙

National Beer Day at local breweries 🍻

Monday is a day to say cheers to beers. It’s April 14, aka National Beer Day, and Annapolis has a few local breweries to choose for those who celebrate.

Most notable (because it’s not usually open on Mondays) Forward Brewing (418 Fourth Street, Annapolis, 21403) is rereleasing its first and flagship Annapolis Boat Beer from 4–9 PM. You can get a draft along with Maryland crab rolls for just $22. That’s a deal we could get our claws around!

As for other places to observe National Beer Day? There are a few other hotspots:

🍺 Chessie’s Wharf — 609 Melvin Ave, Annapolis
🍺 Pherm Brewing Company — 1041 MD-3, Gambrills
🍺 Chesepiooc Real Ale Brewery — 2408 Crofton Blvd, Crofton
🍺 Crooked Crab Brewing Company — 8251 Telegraph Rd Suite D, Odenton

Oh, and because our lawyers said to tell you: Please drink responsibly.

Spring is in the air 🍀

You know that neighbor who had the perfect green lawn last summer? They started preparing for that in spring, likely with Lawn Doctor. Let me explain.

During winter, grass growth slows significantly, and some types even go dormant due to the cold. This can leave your lawn vulnerable to weeds, thinning, and stress damage. A well-timed spring treatment with essential nutrients, pre-emergent, and weed control helps strength the grass, promote healthy lawn growth, and prepare it for the warmer months ahead!

And their expertise doesn’t stop there. They’ll even give you mowing techniques so your grass will be the envy of the neighborhood all summer long. Get your free quote today and check out their newsletter to learn more!
