Good morning, Annapolis. Happy New Year! I hope you took some well-deserved time to rest at the end of 2023 and are recharged, ready to go, and determined to have a fantastic 2024. First objective: Writing 2024 on the first try.
In todayâs Naptown Scoop:

THE DIGEST
Volunteers needed for Semiquincentennial celebration
America is turning 250 in 2026. Thatâs a big deal so Annapolis is going to do something really special. The city needs volunteers to serve on a committee to help decide what that special something is. Click here to apply.
Heads up: BYOB at the grocery store
It may sound like weâre encouraging bad behavior but the second âBâ above stands for bags, not booze. A new law went into effect yesterday prohibiting stores from distributing plastic bags. They can sell you paper bags, but bringing your own is much easier.

LOCAL BUSINESS
Adamâs on Fourth now open
Eastportâs dining corridor â AKA Fourth Street â just got a new option. Adamâs on Fourth is open at 424 Fourth Street and while we havenât had the chance to try it yet, weâve heard nothing but good things. Check out the menu courtesy of Miles Lamborne of Lamborne Lending.
Flamant closed. New restaurant coming soon.
After 6 years in West Annapolis, Flamant is now closed. The Belgian bistro was supposed to close after dinner on December 31 but closed early because of staffing issues. Whatâs replacing it? We canât say just yet but we can you should be excited. You wonât have to be too patient either because the buildingâs new owners hope to reopen the doors with their own concept very soon.
JOANN is out. MOMâs Organic Market is in.
JOANN Fabrics is liquidating its Severna Park store. And in its place, MOMâs Organic Market is coming in. Scott Nash started MOMâs in 1987 out of his momâs garage just up the Beltway in Rockville. MOMâs has 25 stores in 6 states. They expect to open the new store at Park Plaza in late 2024 or early 2025.
Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.

With Michael Phippsâ untimely departure to be offensive coordinator for UMD menâs lacrosse, Joe Amploâs winter break wasnât as relaxing as it was meant to be. The Navy menâs lax coach had to replace an offensive coordinator just about a month before the first scrimmage of 2024. Luckily for Joe, it wasnât a long search.
Phipps resigned on December 19. By the next night, the Capital already had 2 sources naming Hall of Fame coach Dave Cottle as the replacement. A week later, Cottle was officially named OC and out of retirement.
This is the definition of making lemonade when life hands you lemons. In his 28-year head coaching career, Cottle racked up the 13th-most wins of all D1 lax coaches. ($)
Jacob Busic enters transfer portal
Navy football captain Jacob Busic has entered the transfer portal. Because of an injury this season and a covid waiver, he has two more years of NCAA eligibility. However, the Naval Academy does not allow fifth-year seniors to play football. It is the only service academy that doesnât. So Jacob is fielding offers from other schools knowing heâll have to repay his USNA tuition if he does leave without commissioning as a Marine Corps officer. ($)
