Health officer checkup, going running, Christmas tree lighting...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. You know what’s a great word? Zeitgeist. It’s a combination of the German words for time (zeit) and spirit (geist). Definition: the spirit or mood of an era. Use it in a sentence this week and impress your friends.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Run for the kids

  • Fall Fest on West

  • Checking up on the new county health officer

Let’s get to it.

Virtual auction for Annapolis Light House

Tickets for Bountiful Harvest (the country-themed Annapolis Light House fundraiser) are sold out. But don’t worry, cowboy – even if you missed tickets, you can still gallop over to the virtual auction. Anyone can participate through this Friday (10/20). Don’t miss a signed Orioles jersey, Annapolis Blues season tickets, and lots more.

New Health Officer Tonii Gedin’s 3-month checkup

Tonii Gedin has been (permanently) on the job since July. And she’s already moving indicators in the right direction. This year, Anne Arundel County has seen a 2% decrease in opioid overdoses and 18% fewer fatal cases. Tonii’s department plans to place Naloxone dispensing machines around the county to continue to prevent fatal overdoses. She also plans to create a task force to improve health outcomes for moms of color. ($)

Calling all grassroots leaders

Leadership Anne Arundel is famous for its Flagship Program. But what many people don’t know is that 25 years ago, a Flagship class project created another LAA leadership program.

It’s called Neighborhood Leadership Academy and it equips leaders within communities with the tools they need to improve the entire community’s quality of life. Part of the secret sauce is improving communication and teaching students how to create consensus. But the rest? Well you’ll just have to sign up to find out.

NLA is a six month program with one 6-hour meeting per month. The first session is in late January 2024. Oh yeah, and NLA is 100% funded by grants so there’s no cost for participants. Apply here by December 31.
