Public kayak rack, Pigtails & Crewcuts, Made+ cuts a shoelace...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Nothing says the holidays like a candle and boy, have we got one for you.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Public kayak rack

  • Pigtails & Crewcuts

  • Made+ cuts a shoelace

Let’s get to it.

— Ryan Sneddon, Rebecca Kraybill, & Lauren Burke Meyer

P.S. Happy birthday, Paul Nolan! 🍰

Some pairs were just made in heaven. Bourbon & warm chocolate chip cookies, airports & 8 AM cocktails, and Annapolis Candle & Naptown Scoop.

We teamed up last Christmas for a limited-edition candle that raised $8,400 for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank. This year we’re doing it again for Annapolis Hope.

Our last jar was inspired by Hemlock Farm Christmas Trees in Edgewater. This year we headed north to Wildberry Farm, a pillar of Anne Arundel County’s small business community.

The scent is Noble Fir – a clean fragrance with notes of cypress, juniper, & dry gin.

Preorders are open now and the candles will be available soon at two physical locations. I’ll give you a hint: one’s on the jar.

P.S. Preorders will be shipped or ready for pick up well before Christmas.

THE DIGEST

It’s never too late for an education

Hope. Struggle. Hard work. This local comeback story has us smiling through tears. Irma Reyes, an Edgewater resident, just earned her GED from Anne Arundel Community College. During her 18-year hiatus from school, Irma raised a special needs daughter, experienced a painful divorce, and failed multiple GED tests. But she didn’t let any of that stop her.

She even gave a speech during her AACC graduation ceremony.

Irma told her brother, “It felt like I was famous for one day.” Irma, you are famous to us. Congratulations and thanks for inspiring us all. ($)

City Council approves public kayak rack 🛶

It’s okay to test the waters. At least by kayak. City Council just approved a resolution for a year-long pilot of a public kayak rack. Why? Not everyone has space to store their kayaks.

The resolution outlines that the city manager must select a park for the rack and establish rules for its use. Some say Prince George Street is a good location. Others say it’d be terribly dangerous. The $7,500 city-owned rack will be the first public rack in Annapolis. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS

Made+ cuts a ribbon shoelace 👟

You don't cut a ribbon when you open a shoe factory in Annapolis. You cut a shoelace. That’s just good marketing. And that’s exactly what Made+ did this week.

Made+ is making sustainable and stylish shoes right here in Annapolis. You might remember them from this video. And you’ll be seeing a lot more of them because they’re working on a custom pair of Naptown Scoop kicks as we speak.

Manufacturing locally is automatically more sustainable than overseas. But Made+ didn’t stop there. They also use proprietary techniques with a tiny amount of waste material – which isn’t even wasted. It’s recycled! But they still don’t stop there.

Made+ Skiffs are made with 100% recycled REPREVE yarn which is made with discarded plastic bottles.

We can’t wait to show you our shoes. Check out their site and grab some for yourself!

Pigtails & Crewcuts Reopening ✂️

We love a happy ending. Especially, when it’s for a local business like Pigtails and Crewcuts: Haircuts for Kids. This happy ending is more of a second beginning.

In October, a Tesla crashed into their Forest Drive location. Four people, including a child, were injured. Thankfully no major injuries. Last we heard, the cause is unknown. The crash caused the business to close — until now.

Doors reopen Saturday (12/2). And just like a fresh haircut, this new start will inspire good vibes. The owners revamped the space with vibrant colors and cozy corners.

Ever tried to get a baby or toddler to sit still for a haircut? It’s no easy feat. I can personally vouch that Pigtails & Crewcuts is amazing with hair and kids.

‘Tis the Season for looking spiffy! So, start the holidays off right with a haircut for your kiddos. Book your appointment now. — LBM

NAVY SPORTS

The best of the best: Navy Rugby

Navy Rugby had an absolutely dominant season.

🏉 Won the Rugby East Championship
🏉 Scored more points in one game than all conference opponents scored against them. Combined.
🏉 And their only “loss” was a friendly match against the literal oldest rugby club in the world, Dublin’s Trinity College.

The cherry on top of that excellent sundae of a season came on Tuesday when a league-leading 9 Navy players were selected for the Rugby East All-Conference team. I’d say, “GO NAVY, BEAT EVERYONE” but they already did. . .
