🍦Could Annapolis have a charter school?

Good morning, Annapolis. For today’s into, an unedited haiku about Annapolis from ChatGPT:

Whispered winds caress,
Chesapeake's pearl, Annapolis,
Sailors' dreams take flight.

Let’s get to it.

The party so popular you can only buy 4 tickets

Every year that passes where I don’t throw in the towel and get a “real” job, Naptown Scoop hosts a party. We get our best advertisers (like Brad Kappel) to sponsor it. We hire Ken’s Creative Kitchen to cook amazing food. And then we donate whatever money is leftover from ticket sales to an awesome nonprofit.

This year we’re donating to Charting Careers, a nonprofit breaking the cycle of poverty one kid at a time.

Tickets went on sale Monday and we sold so many the first day that I decided to limit orders to four tickets so everyone has a chance to come. The party’s August 18 from 6:30–9:30 PM. Click here to get tickets.

SOLD: Over list price. 8 days on market.

There’s no denying it. The real estate market is slowing a bit. Homes aren’t selling after 2 hours on the market with 16 offers – no contingencies, 25% over asking price, and a no-cost leaseback for 6 months. That’s ridiculous. But the right agents are still moving homes seriously fast.

Take the above home – a beautiful 6,700-square-foot estate on the South River. Brad Kappel sold it for over asking price in just 8 days. The buyer came from out of town looking for the coveted Annapolis lifestyle we know and love. And that’s the secret.

If you’re selling waterfront property in Annapolis, it’s imperative to cast a wide net to reach those affluent out-of-towners seeking the good life in Annapolis. Brad Kappel’s industry-leading marketing reaches those buyers like nobody else. Contact Brad to Make Your Move today.

THE DIGEST

🥓 What does Kevin Bacon do between shows?

In case you missed it, Kevin Bacon and his brother, Michael, did double double duty at Rams Head last weekend. Double double duty meaning two shows a day on Friday and Saturday. And while the Bacons could do whatever they want between shows (like rank Annapolis’ best breakfast restaurants), they chose to plant native plants at Broad Creek Park with the Arundel Rivers Federation instead.

🏫 Charter school in Annapolis?

It isn’t often we write about new schools in Anne Arundel. Yet here we are writing about 2 in the same week! Former teacher Romy Pittman hopes to start a charter school called New Village Academy in the fall of 2024. If approved, the public, tuition-free school will value hands-on experience over traditional classroom time; each student will complete 150 hours of internships every year and be able to design their own career path — including some not available at county vocational schools. New leadership at St. John’s College

Two new deans are starting at St. John’s this summer. Susan Paalman will serve as the school’s new dean of students, effective July 1. Brendan Boyle is the new associate dean for graduate programs; he started work on June 1. Neither is new to the Annapolis campus. Susan’s been teaching at SJC since 1997 and Brendan’s been on the faculty since 2013. Deans at SJC serve four or five-year terms before cycling back into other roles or maybe heading on sabbatical.

LOCAL BUSINESS

🏹 đŸŽŻ DodgeBow Ribbon Cutting

This is a bold claim but I think it’s a safe one. The highest-adrenaline new business in town is holding its ribbon cutting this week. It’s called DodgeBow and it’s a combination of archery and dodgeball. Kids love it. Adults love it. Everyone loves it. Come see why for yourself and bring the kids to DodgeBow Annapolis’ grand opening and ribbon cutting from 4–6 PM this Friday. Space is limited and includes free gameplay so hurry and reserve your spot!

P.S. You’re gonna love the owner, Louben. He’s the human Energizer bunny.

SPORTS

⚽ Annapolis Blues continue to dominate in the stands and on the pitch

Did somebody piss off the Annapolis Blues? If so, keep doing whatever you’re doing. With last weekend’s 6–1 victory over Grove United FC, the Blues have now scored 3 or more goals in 5 of their 6 games. I’m getting a little sick of that goal song. . . . Just kidding. I’m never sick of winning.

Attendance has also been excellent. After we set the NPSL record for attendance at the Blues first game, haters said it wouldn’t last. Well it turns out Annapolis really likes soccer because with 7,208 fans on Father’s Day, the Blues now claim 3 of the top 4 most-attended regular season games in NPSL history. And all in their inaugural season.

The next home game is Saturday, July 1 at 7 PM against Northern Virginia United. Get tickets.

🏊‍♀️ Navy’s new diving coach

Naval Academy athletic director Chet Gladchuk announced Tim Fisher as Navy’s new associate head coach for diving this week. Former coach Rich MacDonald resigned in March after being arrested for assault charges following a domestic incident involving his wife. Through his involvement at several local dive clubs, Tim Fisher has sent over 100 divers on to NCAA D1 programs. One thing we won’t hold against him . . . Tim served in the army from 1991–1997. Just kidding. Thanks for your service, Tim, and welcome to Annapolis!
