Don’t look to X (formerly Twitter) for your Annapolis news updates anymore

Like about 13% of its other daily users since Elon Musk took over, the City of Annapolis is no longer on X. It had previously used the platform to send out emergency alerts, event info, and other updates. Remembering the Founder of We Care and Friends

Larry Griffin was addicted to drugs for 28 years before he started We Care and Friends to help people overcome the same problems he did. The 73-year-old passed away from complications of dementia in late November. And while he spent about the same amount of time addicted to drugs as he did helping others who were, he’s much more remember for the latter. We Care and Friends is now run by Larry’s stepson, Shelton Willet, owner of the cigar shop Vitola 121 on Main Street. A farewell tribute will be held in early 2024.

What’s the Cotton Company on Main Street?

The secret’s out. There’s another new store on Main Street. Cotton Company is now open at 152 Main Street and it’s the perfect place to get a surefire win of a Christmas gift for men, women, and kids. They sell recognizable, high-quality brands like Patagonia, YETI, & Rodd & Gunn. Check it out during the final Midnight Madness this week!

Annapolis’ first board game cafe

Competitors assemble. The grand (soft) opening of Board’em inside Vibe is Wednesday (12/20) from 10 AM-7 PM. Vibe is a unique venue with outdoor and indoor stages, seating for 400, and now Annapolis’ first and largest board game cafe. It’s located at 2072 Somerville Road.

Board’em will feature classics like Monopoly and Candy Land plus hard-to-find games like the 1999 Pokemon Master Trainer game. They’ll start with 400 games with more to come. Here’s the current game list.

Gas & electricity bills going up

Time to embrace your inner Ben Franklin and save a few pennies. Not too many thankfully. BGE rates for delivery of both gas and electricity will increase by an average of about 3% a year for the next three years. New rates will take effect January 1 and are expected to raise the average bill by about $22 total after three years. BGE will use the increased capital to invest in infrastructure and meet Maryland’s electrification goals.

The company initially asked the state of Maryland to let it raise rates by about $31 after three years but the Maryland Public Service Commission negotiated and approved a smaller increase. ($)

The Anne Arundel County Community Action Agency will host the 27th Annual Harriett Pratt Gifts of Love this Wednesday (12/20) at the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel.

Then local businesses and individuals brighten the holidays for the homeless, fostered, and low-income residents of our county.

Chesnut out after just one season

Six days after finishing the 2023 season with a record of 5-7, the Naval Academy announced that offensive coordinator Grant Chesnut will not be returning in 2024. It was his first season as offensive coordinator at Navy. He’d spent the previous 10 at Kennesaw State. From 2022 to 2023, Navy declined in several key offensive stats:

  • Points per game: 21.9 ➡️ 17.7

  • First downs: 211 ➡️ 174

  • Yards per game: 326.8 ➡️ 300.3

Head coach Brian Newberry said, “As the head coach my job is to constantly evaluate every part of our program, starting with myself and the rest of our staff. Every decision I make is purely about what's best for our program and our players.” A nationwide search is underway for a replacement. ($)

Ever wonder what a D1 basketball team would do to a D3 team?

Well, wonder no more. In what’s become a finals week tradition, Navy men’s basketball played Washington College on Sunday afternoon and absolutely rolled them 91–33. This is the fifth time the Mids have played the Shoremen. Navy has won all five by an average of 49 points – putting this game well above average with a margin of 58. With just two days of exams left before the winter break, we say, “Good luck!” to all midshipmen. ($)

Past results

Men's Basketball (3-6)
12/17 vs. Washington College | W 91–33

Women’s Basketball (3-6)
12/19 vs. Goucher College | 6 PM
