Brigade Boxing Championships, Jimmy John's on Main closes, David Jones joining lax hall of fame...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Everyone’s asking if Taylor Swift will be in Baltimore for the Ravens/Chiefs game on Sunday but I want to know if Jason Kelce’s going to steal the show again.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Brigade Boxing Championships

  • Jimmy John’s on Main closes

  • Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Another Annapolis laxer to Join USA Lacrosse Hall of Fame 🥍

Acacia Walker isn’t the only Annapolis native joining the Chesapeake Chapter of the USA Lacrosse Hall of Fame this Thursday. David Jones, a Davidsonville native who now calls Annapolis home, was a four-year varsity standout for St. Mary’s High School and two-time All-American at University of Virginia. ($)

David, Acacia, and three others will be enshrined at a banquet on Thursday (1/25) at the Annapolis Elks Lodge 622 in Edgewater.

David’s company, Atlantic Prime Mortgage, is also a longtime Naptown Scoop partner. Scoop readers know Dave’s biz partner, Wes Tower, as Ryan’s partner in crab — er crime — on our famous crabcake reviews. Speaking of, we’re ISO a new sponsor for crabcake reviews this summer. Annapolis Film Festival seeks “Out of the Box” shorts

Lights, camera, action. . . and submit! If you’ve got a short film idea that fits the theme “Out of the Box,” the Annapolis Film Festival wants to hear from you. Applications are now open for the festival’s annual short film challenge. Five finalists will win a trip to the festival where they’ll pitch their concept to a panel of industry judges. The winner will get a video, sound, and post-production package to make their movie worth $30,000! Learn more.

P.S. The Annapolis Film Festival is April 4–7 and passes are on sale now!

Deadline extended for Rotary gala beneficiary

Galas are about much more than getting snazzy and schmoozing. They’re mostly about fundraising for a good cause. And the Annapolis Rotary Club is still looking for a nonprofits beneficiary for its 2025 Black Tie and Diamonds Gala. They’ve extended the deadline until February 15, so if your nonprofit could use a little extra money to boost its mission (yes, please, right?), check this out!

LOCAL BUSINESS

AAEDC grant money for organizations affected by Annapolis’ recent flooding

Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation is extending a lifeline to Annapolis’ businesses affected by recent near-record flooding. Grants (not loans) of up to $50,000 are available to businesses/nonprofits located in the City of Annapolis to repair property, replace equipment/inventory, or supplement income lost because of closure.

Many places still remain closed like the Annapolis Maritime Museum, Storm Bros. Ice Cream, and more on Dock Street. However, not a single business plans to call it quits because of the flooding. Click here to learn more and apply.

Meet AND Creative Studio 🎨

AND Creative was born when Alison Harbaugh asked Darin Gilliam to join her as co-owner of ArtFarm Studios in 2017. But it was just recently that they brought everything under one roof and actually named it AND Creative. Together, the ladies work with clients on art installations, creative events, and art production. They still run ArtFarm Studios and also Annapolis Arts Week.

Their new 2,500 square-foot studio space with an industrial art gallery vibe is located at 1851 McGuckian St, Suite B in the Annapolis Design District. This Friday (1/26) from 5–7 PM, they’ll host a gallery reception featuring nine artists.

This new space isn’t just for art events. It's the perfect spot for a party, book club meeting, networking event, creative workshop, you name it. . . . You can rent the entire space or just a meeting room. Details here.

Jimmy John’s on Main Street Closes 🥖

Mission BBQ isn’t the only eatery leaving Downtown Annapolis. Jimmy John’s at 139 Main Street has permanently closed. Eye on Annapolis first reported the closure over the weekend. And while it’s a disappointing loss, the speedy sandwich chain has another location in the Annapolis Town Center just like Mission BBQ.

So now I have a question. What do you want to see replace these two? You’re the real estate broker. Tell us what downtown Annapolis needs!

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

St. John’s College winter “lecture series”

In an ideal world, colleges and universities aren’t just for enrolled students, but a center of learning for the entire community. On that note, St. John’s College just announced its winter/spring “lecture” series. I quote the word lecture because some are true lectures while others are concerts or plays.

Lectures happen on Friday nights at 7:30 PM at Mellon Hall on the downtown campus. They’re 100% free and open to the public. In true St. John’s fashion, each has some time built in for questions and answers. Click here to see a schedule of all the events.

This Friday, Patricia Locke will deliver the National Endowment for the Humanities lecture titled “Hair, Clothes, Brush: On Becoming Human in The Tale of Genji.”

De-vining our local trails

Most of us like to get outside to be surrounded by nature — not to be overtaken by it. So a few local groups have stepped up and taken it upon themselves to rip out invasive vines by the roots in a few places around town. Save Our Trees, along with Anne Arundel Weed Resistance and the Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails are working this Saturday, January 27 and next Saturday, February 3 to clean up the Broadneck Peninsula Trail and trails in Cape St. Claire. Get more details and sign up here.

Save the date: Brigade Championship Finals

Consider this a one-two punch. 1) It’s a ton of fun and 2) it’s free. The USNA Boxing Club’s 83rd annual Brigade Championship Finals are exactly one month away on Friday, February 23 at 7 PM in Alumni Hall. Did you know every midshipman has to take boxing class their plebe (aka freshman) year?

Btw, this a delightfully old school affair. The boxing coach requests that all attendees please dress business casual.

Theatre Talk Tuesday

There’s a mix of intriguing, thought-provoking shows slated for the Annapolis performing arts scene this week. Take your pick:

🇺🇸 In Glory Denied, America’s longest-held prisoner of war returns from Vietnam to find his life at home upheaved. Performed by the Annapolis Opera on Saturday at Maryland Hall, 801 Chase Street, Annapolis, MD 21401. Based on a true story. Saturday (1/27) and Sunday (1/28) at 3 PM.

🤖 In Marjorie Prime, an aging widow spends her final days with an AI-generated hologram of her late husband. Running Thursday through Sunday at Colonial Players of Annapolis, 108 East Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.

🃏 In The Gin Game, two retirement home residents revisit memories of their long lives over a game of cards. Performed Friday through Sunday by Compass Rose Theater at Maryland Hall, 801 Chase Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.
