šŸ¦Annapolis' hottest coffee table book

Naptown Scoop is turning 3, new school on the block, someone always has to go first...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis and happy Juneteenth. If youā€™ve got the day off, snooze the alarm for me. For those about to grind, we salute you.

Letā€™s get to it.

ā€”Ryan Sneddon

Naptown Scoop is turning 3

Every year that Naptown Scoop doesnā€™t run out of money and shut down, we have a party. Itā€™s worth celebrating. About 600,000 businesses fail or close every year.

But we donā€™t just celebrate not failing. We also give back. So we choose a nonprofit every year and donate proceeds from ticket sales and amazing sponsors like our title sponsor, Brad Kappel. This year weā€™ve chosen Charting Careers, a local nonprofit breaking the cycle of poverty one kid at a time.

Naptown Scoopā€™s third anniversary party is August 18 at 6:30. Tickets (which sold out for the first two parties) go on sale at 5:30 PM tonight but are available to Super Fans at 10 AM. Click here to become a Super Fan.

THE DIGEST

šŸŽØ Put this next to your Jay Flemings

Kristin Cronic was nervous when she got admitted to the Naval Academy in 2007. But when she found a plebe summer photo series by Pete Souza, she felt like she could handle it. Once plebe summer started, Kristin promised to tell the story her way. 10 years later, she started painting.

Six years later, Kristin has released a 163-page book thatā€™s a must-have on any Annapolis coffee table (especially if you sponsor midshipmen), A Midshipmanā€™s Journey: Plebe to Officer at the United States Naval Academy Through a Graduateā€™s Eyes and Painterā€™s Brush.

Someone always has to go first

Severna Park Board of Education member Dana Schallheim believes her work isnā€™t done. She just announced that sheā€™ll be running to reclaim her seat next year. All seven board seats will be up for election but Dana is the first official hat in the ring so far. ($)

New Director of Social Services

County Executive Steuart Pittman announced Rachael Maconachy as new Director of the Department of Social Services (DSS). Rachaelā€™s been with Anne Arundel DSS for 24 years ā€“ starting as an entry-level social worker and most recently serving as assistant director for child welfare. In her new role, Rachael says sheā€™s excited to continue ā€œengaging children, adults, and families in a way that those we serve feel valued.ā€ āœŠ

LOCAL BUSINESS

šŸŽ New school on the block

Dr. Seuss says, ā€œthe more you learn, the more places you go.ā€ Roman and Jenny Hardgrave think the places you learn matter too. So theyā€™re starting a new elementary school in September.

The Hardgraves have three kids and run Maryland Curiosity Lab. That experience ā€“ which is all about making learning fun ā€“ led them to launch Acton Academy Annapolis. Acton Academy is a global network of 270 schools built on Socratic discussion, mixed-age learning, lots of outdoor activities, and a whole bunch of other ā€œalternativeā€ learning methods.

Enrollment is open for this fall. Click here to learn more.

WHATā€™S HAPPENINā€™

Juneteenth. Whatā€™s open, whatā€™s closed?

The parade was Saturday but the federal holiday (created by President Biden in 2021) is today. Before you go to return that library book, read this:

šŸ—‘ļø County & city curbside trash collection continues as scheduled. WMS facilities are closed.

šŸ” City and County offices are closed. So is the Stanton Center, all AACPL branches, and Maryland Hall but not the Pip Moyer Recreation Center.

šŸŽØ Last call: Paint Annapolis

From June 4ā€“11, artists painted outside all around town (through smoke and sweat) for the 22nd annual Paint Annapolis. Your last chance to view those works is Wednesday, 5ā€“7 PM at the Maryland Federation of Art Pop-Up Gallery at 4 Church Circle.

šŸ“† Weekend Preview

šŸŽø Eastport a Rockinā€™. Annapolisā€™ home-grown local music festival. 4 stages. 37 bands. Only $30 if you buy tickets this week. Saturday 6/24 from 11 AMā€“8 PM.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.
