Good morning, Annapolis. On this day in 1850, Florida physician John Gorrie showed the world how to make ice via refrigeration. Dr. Gorrie walked so Chick-fil-A could run.

When thereâs a tragedy like the flooding in Texas, weâre always wondering what we can do to help. Sometimes, one of the biggest impacts is as simple as donating to a good organization. And right now, Trademark â Annapolis Town Centerâs management company â which happens to be based in Texas, is matching up to $50k in donations for relief in Kerr County.
All you have to do is make a donation to one of three organizations and email your receipt to [email protected] so they can match your donation. Itâs that easy.
Editorâs note: Just ask writer Dylan. He was so moved that he made a donation after writing this story.
Alderman DaJuan Gay, who represents Annapolisâ Ward 6, is not seeking a third term, leaving a seat up for grabs. And Craig Cussimanio, a former communications professional and now a full-time parent, has thrown his name in the hat for consideration.
Gay was the youngest alderman elected in Annapolis history. He now turns his focus to finishing up his bachelorâs degree in criminal justice. In his filing on Thursday, Cuissimanio cited his extensive volunteer experiences across the city as giving him insight into the cityâs diverse needs, and providing him with a greater perspective on how to make all voices heard. What could you do with $2 million? The short answer: a lot. And thatâs how much money is going out in the form of support grants to 65 local nonprofit organizations through the countyâs Community Support Grant Program. Most of the grants are between $10k and $50k, and they are awarded based on merits like:
â
Services provided to underserved populations
â
Addressing health and well-being of communities
â
Equity and inclusion efforts
â
Work to close the opportunity gap in education
County Executive Steuart Pittman and Erin Karpewicz, the CEO of Arundel Community Development Services, presented reps from each of the nonprofits with checks at a ceremony last week. Check out the full list of nonprofits.

Itâs often said that thereâs no such thing as bad pizza. We donât know about that. But thereâs definitely such thing as great pizza. Less than a year after opening their first pie shop on West Street, locally-owned Timber Pizza is opening in Edgewater tomorrow. If youâre a pizza lover, you should be stoked.
The Infatuation calls Timber one of the best pizzas in DC (where Timber started). The Michelin Guide (the folks who give the stars) loves it. Bon AppĂŠtit named Timber Pizzeria of the Year in 2017. And most importantly, Naptown Scoop says itâs a damn fine pizza. We always recommend the Bentley.
So get on over to 3279 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater. The grand opening is tomorrow!
In news weâve been saying for years but itâs nice to see a fancy guidebook recognize it, Annapolis Ice Cream Company topped the Fodorâs list of the 12 best ice cream shops in the United States. The original is on Main Street but they have shops branded as Always Ice Cream in Edgewater, West Annapolis, Gambrills, Severna Park, and more even further from Annapolis. Fodorâs said the Main Street shopâs been voted a favorite for the last 20 years and we see why: theyâve got classics and wild flavors and itâs always delicious.
P.S. Pro tip: Annapolis Ice Cream Company also owns the Daily Scoop in Pasadena. So wherever you hang your hat, AIC probably isnât too far. Good thing, because itâs always important to live near an ice cream shop.
Got juice? This month, Annapolis Juice Shop, formerly RASA, is celebrating 7 years of business with a super fun juice drive: during the month of July, Lisa and team are focused on putting 2,000 bottles of juice into our thirsty hands. The drive is intended to get Annapolis healthy and secure the next chapter of the juice shopâs future. To cap off the month-long celebration, theyâre having a birthday party on July 26 at (appropriately) 7:30 AM with yoga, meditation, sound bath, and (of course) juice.

At the City Councilâs meeting tonight at 6 PM in City Council Chambers (160 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis 21401), the council will discuss updating the process for setting their compensation (because yes, their salary is public business); potentially limiting the number of short-term rentals in the city (down to 10% of residences in a blockface); and regulating walking tours in the historic district. For the past two years, we didnât think the Annapolis Blues knew how to lose. They certainly know how to fill up a stadium. But this year, only one of those was true. Making the jump to USL League 2 brought much tougher competition and a 7 win, 6 loss, and 1 draw season. Still good enough for fourth in the division (a good result for the first year in a tougher league), but the Blues definitely want more.
Head coach Colin Herriot told the Capital that any other team would have been thrilled with that but the Blues are victims of their own success. They want more and plan to work extra hard in the offseason for a better season next year. ($)
