Giant pumpkin photos, Christmas time is (almost here), Navy cross country...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. For an October Scoop, there is a lot of Christmas in here today.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Navy cross country

  • Board of Education meeting

  • 🎄

Let’s get to it.

Giant pumpkins get carved

Ice sculptors and local artists went to work on Annapolis’ great pumpkins Friday night. By sunset, several of the gigantic gourds had been turned into orange works of art. As usual, local musician Skribe was super creative. He chopped a pumpkin up into little pieces and used a cartoon ka-boom sign to simulate an explosion. Find that one at the Boatyard.

You can find the other pumpkins (locations here) through tomorrow or until they get too rotten, whichever comes first. You’ll notice some have already been removed.

THE DIGEST

Annapolis makes another “Best of” travel list

It’s been a good fall for Annapolis. We made Condé Nast Traveler’s list of the best small cities in the USA – coming in at #9. But as we approach December, we also made a Travel + Leisure list – the 25 Best Christmas Towns in the USA. We’re a little lower – #15 this time – and we did lose to Newport (#14) 🙄 but thanks to the Eastport Yacht Club Lights Parade & Midnight Madness, it’s #1 in my book.

Annapolis Area Christian School volleyball completes remarkable season

Smaller fish + bigger pond = terrifying. Or so thought the Annapolis Area Christian School volleyball seniors. They never dreamed of leaving their IAAM B conference – but they’ve been crushing it since they moved up to A last season. Last week, they beat Mount de Sales in the semifinal game. Unfortunately, the Eagles fell to Maryvale Prep last night in the conference championship. It stings now, but congratulations on a great season, Eagles. ($)

South River boys soccer upsets Severna Park

It wouldn’t be inaccurate to call Severna Park soccer the bane of South River soccer’s existence. While South River’s only lost 5 games in the last 2 seasons, 4 were against Severna Park. But this Saturday, the South River Seahawks flew higher than Severna Park’s Falcons. South River protected a 1 goal lead for most of the second half to win the 3A East Region I semifinal 1–nil. Tomorrow, they’re heading to Salisbury for the final against James M. Bennett High School. ($)
