THE DIGEST

Click to update: Pittman shares latest on the cyber incident 💻

In the latest chapter of the sci-fi novel Anne Arundel is currently living through, County Executive Steuart Pittman says most of the government’s IT operations are back up and running following a cyber attack in late February. There’s still no official word on the cause behind the incident, but the county says the attack was external. Most county services have been restored and are now available. Some services do remain under manual processes (for now), so the county is offering options for other ways of paying and appropriate accommodations for late payments. To keep everyone updated on the latest, the county launched a cyber incident webpage. It has details on what services are available plus an archive of press releases.

Army Corps Approves Key Bridge Rebuild Permit

Although outside Annapolis, the Key Bridge collapse and rebuild is a story we’ll continue to follow semi-closely. Nearly one year after a container ship struck the bridge, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved a permit for its rebuilding. The new bridge will reconnect the I-695 Baltimore Beltway, improving community accessibility.

Some KEY facts (see what we did there?):

  • Designed by Kiewit Corp., the taller cable-stayed bridge is expected to cost between $1.7–$1.9 billion, with Uncle Sam footing the entire bill like your favorite uncle does on vacation.

  • It includes reinforced pier foundations, pier protection islands, and six structural “dolphins” for increased protection.

  • Construction is set to begin this summer, with completion slated for October 2028. ($)

Three AACPS students named as BOE finalists

Congratulations are in order for Michelle Fadele, Brayden Morgan, and Jack Warrick. These three AACPS juniors are finalists to be Anne Arundel’s Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB). The BOE’s junior member will be chosen by the Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils in late April. They’ll also receive an $8,000 scholarship to the college of their choice. Congratulations to all the finalists and good luck!

LOCAL BUSINESS

Old Line Golf now accepting members 🏌️‍♂️

We would say “Old Line Golf Club ain’t your parents’ golf club,” but . . . well, maybe it is. This newly established venue at 302 Harry S. Truman Parkway, Suite E, Annapolis, has the feel of a traditional golf club with classically decorated spaces and a community of serious golfers. But what places it firmly in 2025 is its state-of-the-art Trackman iO hitting bays, which let you improve your game indoors — no need to worry about the weather outside. The best part? They’re currently accepting members. So if you’re a golfer in search of a great community and a sweet practice spot, be sure to check them out.

Only 8 dogs remain in Mutt Madness

We started with 64. Fifty six dogs have now been eliminated (including my own sadly). The decisions are getting even harder because all of these pups are so dang cute. But you must choose. Round 4 starts today. We’ve almost crowned a winner!

Mutt Madness is proudly presented by Western Shore Veterinary Hospital, the official veterinarian of Naptown Scoop. They’ve got a nearly perfect Google rating with over 100 reviews and we happily just added one to that list. Our little Sadie isn’t afraid of going at all. In fact, she loves it! Probably has something to do with the endless supply of Easy Cheese.

Fundraiser focus: Rock the Dock. Tickets on sale 3/14 🌊

Scoop holds a special place in its heart for Rock the Dock, the first fundraiser we ever helped. We love supporting The Annapolis Rotaract Club and their signature event. They provide opportunities for young people (ages 18+) to socialize, grow professionally, and participate in community service projects.

The 14th annual Rock the Dock is Thursday, June 5, 6–10 PM at the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Grab your all-inclusive ticket starting March 14 for beer, wine, a crush bar, all-you-can-eat BBQ, and live music from Loose Ties! Proceeds benefit the AA County Literacy Council, a nonprofit that helps adults and out-of-school youth with literacy and math through tutoring services. Enjoy a booze wagon raffle, 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and event giveaway. 21+ welcome.

Want to sponsor or donate to the silent auction? Email Sue Weber at [email protected].

Angler’s Night Out 🎣

Did you know blue catfish are considered an invasive species in the Chesapeake Bay? But according to NOAA, their big size makes them an ideal target for recreational anglers. We don’t know if these are exactly the kinds of interesting facts you’ll learn from the Q&A with local fishing experts at Angler’s Night on Wednesday, but there’s only one way to find out: Join your fellow fishermen and fisherwomen at 5:30 PM at West End Sports Bar & Grill for this evening sponsored by the Coastal Conservation Association of Maryland. The Q&A will be followed by the Pickerel Championship awards presentation, which honors the anglers who excelled in the catch-photo-release tournament starring the toothy pickerel this winter. Reminder: Annapolis Blues Women's Tryouts ⚽️ 💙

Don’t pass up this chance to score a spot on the first-ever women’s semi-professional soccer team in Annapolis. Did we mention you’ll play in front of 8,000+ fans?! It’s an exaggeration to say that literally no other team in semi-pro soccer draws as many fans as reliably as our Blues do. Sign up now!
