THE DIGEST
Midshipmen first class receive service assignments
About a thousand midshipmen from the class of 2024 received their service assignments last week. The Mids chose these way back in August and had to wait a long 4 months to get matched. 83% called home with the news that they matched to their top choice. Of the top three assignments, 205 midshipmen are matched to SWO (surface warfare officer), 221 to the Navy pilot track, and 158 to submarines. There’s also the Marine Corps track and several other Navy options. The least popular post? Aviation Maintenance Duty Officer – with just one student.
Make room in the trophy case
Two high school teams had a lot to celebrate this weekend. Hailing from just south of Annapolis, the South River Seahawks boys soccer team won the 3A state title with a convincing 5-1 victory over Towson High School. Hailing from just north of Annapolis, the Severna Park girls soccer team completed a true perfect season with a 2-0 win over Mt. Hebron. Congrats to the players and coaches on both teams! ($)

A MESSAGE FROM HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE
You manage everything else, why not end of life?
In a culture that often teaches us to resist discussing illness and death, having a conversation about dying can have a profound impact. What does death mean in my life? How do I want my family involved? Having these courageous conversations can mean the difference between the type of death we hope for, and one where we don’t have a say. For nearly 45 years, Hospice of the Chesapeake has been having courageous conversations with those living with illness, helping provide comfort, allowing them to spend their final months wherever they call home, surrounded by loved ones with a focus on what matters most. Learn more about their services at www.hospicechesapeake.org.

Navy football moves within 1 win of bowl eligibility
After getting embarrassed by Temple to start the month of November, the Midshipmen have turned on the jets. For two games in a row now, the Mids have allowed their opponent less than a full touchdown while getting the points needed to win. With Saturday’s 10–0 shutout over East Carolina, the Mids are 4–3 in the conference and 5–5 overall with two games remaining, SMU this coming weekend and Army on December 9. ($)
