From the Archives – Meet Your Neighbor: Dave Gendell

Unveiling of the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse stamp, August 7, 2021

Thanks to a golden hour photo mission with Bay photographer David Sites on Friday, the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is fresh on my mind. So I dug deep into Scoop’s archives to the first feature story we ever wrote.

It was October 2020. Dave Gendell had just published the only book dedicated entirely to the Thomas Point Light House. Scoop started publishing just 2 months prior; our readership was 1,394 at the time. Two and a half years later, readership is over 15,000 so we want to share Dave’s story again – freshly updated with photos from Friday evening’s cruise.

Murder-Suicide in Parole

Naptown Scoop doesn't cover crime 95% of the time. However, there are times when things shake our community so much that we must share. 3 people are dead after what police are calling a “targeted shooting” near Annapolis Town Center on Friday. Around 2 PM, a man shot a woman and a man, then himself. The second man ran for help but passed away at the hospital. Investigation is ongoing; anyone with information is asked to call 410-222-4700 to provide anonymous tips. ($)

We are the champions 🏉

Forget sailing. Annapolis is a rugby town now. Navy’s men’s rugby team completed a perfect season (18–0) over the weekend to win the program’s first-ever Division I-A National Championship. Despite facing a 15-point deficit (the largest of the season) and trailing Cal for over an hour, Navy’s ruggers didn’t give up the ship and got the job done. Looks like making rugby a varsity sport was a great idea after all.

Traffic alert: Severn River Bridge work đźš— đźš— đźš—

Expect overnight double lane closures on the Severn River Bridge this week for pavement patching. Work hours are 9 PM–5 AM.

St. John’s College 🤝 Notre Dame of MD

Did you know Maryland has a teacher shortage? According to Maryland Matters, almost 10% of teachers left the profession entirely during the 2021–2022 school year. Enter St. John’s College. They just announced a new partnership with Notre Dame of Maryland University for grad students to earn a Liberal Arts Education Certificate (St. John’s) and an M.A. in Teaching (Notre Dame) in just 2 years. More details on the program will be released this summer.

The bazaar includes a panel discussion with media representatives, breakout discussions with PR experts, and speed networking with media representatives. Participants include:

đź“Ł Jamie Costello | Anchor, WMAR-2
đź“Ł Rick Hutzell | Columnist, Baltimore Banner (and former Capital Gazette editor)
đź“Ł And more
