Is Peter Chang Coming to Annapolis?, BloomHaven Concert #1, A New Plan to Save the Bay...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. They say only two things in life are certain, but we think there are three. Death, taxes, and Bay Bridge traffic. Hope you’ve got a good audiobook and if you’re driving with young kids, may we suggest the alphabet game?

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Is Peter Chang Coming to Annapolis?

  • BloomHaven Concert #1

  • A New Plan to Save the Bay

Let’s get to it.

Honorary Dog of the Week: Meet Bear

Annapolis Fire Department

We couldn’t actually make Bear dog of the week because that’s reserved for pups awaiting adoption at the SPCA, but we can make the Annapolis Fire Department’s newest member an honorary dog of the week.

Bear is a 10-month old Belgian Malinois who just finished explosive detection training down in Florida. He’s happy to be back north. He’ll be working with a human partner, Investigator and Bomb technician Matthew Montgomery. Bear’s appointment in Annapolis is possible thanks to the support of the Chesapeake K9 Fund, who help purchase first responder canines. Thanks for keeping our streets safe, Bear. And unlike the rest of our dogs of the week, we hope never to meet you due to the nature of your job.

A new plan to clean up the Bay šŸ¦€ šŸ¦Ŗ

Over the last 20 years, Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts have been successful. Oyster populations are up 300%, dead zones are the lowest since 1985, and underwater grasses are resurfacing in areas thought to be deserts. But just like your uncle who’s been ā€œabout 15 poundsā€ away from his goal for the last 15 years, the Bay’s not quite there yet. At least not according to the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement.

State officials have known we wouldn’t hit the goals for a while, so in an effort to continue the momentum with realistic expectations, they announced a new blueprint on Tuesday.

The plan includes different targets, staggered deadlines, and goals adjusted using new-fangled computer modeling. Rather than one end goal, there are projected outcomes for 2030, 2035, and 2040. ā€œIf we set these interim targets and actually evaluate the program – not every 10 years, but every couple of years – to see what tweaks we need to make based on the best available science, we’ll have a stronger, more efficient program moving forward, ā€œKeisha Sedlacek, federal director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation told The Capital. LOCAL BUSINESS

A Peter Chang restaurant on Bay Ridge Road? 🄢

You’ll have to bear with us as we become restaurant sleuths for a few minutes, but we heard a rumor that legendary Chinese chef Peter Chang miiiight be opening a restaurant in Annapolis. Specifically at 918 Bay Ridge Road, the former location of Details of Design.

Okay, so it’s not a secret that Chang wants to open an Annapolis restaurant. He said as much in a December 2024 interview with Northern Virginia Mag (shortly after the property on Bay Ridge Road sold to a company called Chang and CH Investment LLC 🧐). The Chinese-born chef has opened many celebrated restaurants throughout Virginia and the southeast following his tenure at the Chinese Embassy in DC after he came here to work nearly 25 years ago. Locations in Maryland include:

ā˜‘ļø Peter Chang’s China Bistro — Rockville
ā˜‘ļø  Q by Peter Chang — Bethesda
ā˜‘ļø  NiHao — Baltimore
ā˜‘ļø  Peter Chang Baltimore — Baltimore

Does this mean Annapolis is next? We’re speculating, but a company that has worked for Peter Chang did apply for a demolition permit at 918 Bay Ridge Road. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything for certain. But if you’re a fan of Sichuan cuisine, you might have some good news coming your way.

P.S. Though the names are similar, Peter Chang is not affiliated with P.F. Chang’s.
