Ravens win furthest away game of the year

I thought I was on the wrong train. There were Ravens jerseys, yes. But there were also jerseys from every other NFL team in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I sat next to a British brother & sister sporting Dolphins and Giants. They cheered when either team scored.

The Ravens’ last trip to London didn’t go so well. Back in 2017, the Jacksonville Jaguars crushed them 44–7. Mostly because of that, the team flew over last Monday so they had 6 nights to adjust to the time difference.

Maybe it was jet lag. Maybe it was too much fish and chips, but whatever it was, touchdowns were hard to come by yesterday. Each team only scored one. Justin Tucker kicked 6 field goals.

Regardless, the Ravens did enough for a 24–16 win over the Tennessee Titans. Nice work for the fans who traveled 3,631 miles for the game.

And take it from someone who’s done it twice this fall, going overseas for an (American) football game is a total blast. I’m just glad I’m not a 6’5” 270-pound linebacker. That’d be a long flight.

Healthy pet, happy life 🐾

In the United States, 59% of dogs and 61% of cats were classified as overweight or obese in 2022. This is a huge problem. Pun intended.

Obesity leads to many costly health issues and shortens the lifespan of our pets. Nobody wants that. Exercise is a huge part of maintaining a healthy weight in our pets but diet is critical too. But how do you know what to do?

Your veterinarian can determine the ideal weight for your pets, suggest a diet, and create an exercise plan to make it all happen. Call Western Shore Veterinary Hospital to get your pet healthy today.

THE DIGEST

Annapolis teacher wins state Teacher of the Year

Three people who are having a very good 2023: Travis Kelce, Lionel Messi, and Mary Kay Connerton. After being named AACPS Teacher of the Year in April, Connerton was just named Maryland Teacher of the Year as well. Next stop? National Teacher of the Year.

Four other AACPS teachers have earned the statewide honor: Linda Adamson, Patricia Neidhart, Josh Carroll, and Teresa Beilstein.

Dudes in blazers raise $124,660

The blazers were pressed. The bourbon was crisp. The cigars were smoky. 👌 By those unofficial metrics, Blazers . Bourbon . Cigars on September 28 was a great night. By official metrics, the night raised $124,660. That record-breaking number supports Historic Annapolis’ important work of keeping old things fresh, hip, and relevant. The next BBC is 9/26/2024 so save the date.

Speaking of old things. . . Scoop recently took a tour of The James Brice House that Historic Annapolis is restoring. It’s one of the largest and most elegant of Annapolis’ surviving historic homes. Check it out!

Annapolis Hope in the Capital

We want to thank Rebecca Ritzel and Paul Gillespie from the Capital for coming to the Annapolis Hope kickoff last week. Rebecca wrote a lovely story and Paul shot great photos as always. ($)

Charting Careers is oh so close

Hey Scoop. This fall, our friends over at Charting Careers set a goal to raise $20,000 for their back to school fundraiser. It went pretty well. But now it’s down to the wire and they’re $250 short. If everyone reading this donated $0.02 (yes, that’s 2 cents) they’d hit the goal. So what do you say? Can we get them across the finish line?

❓Why should you help? This donation will support Charting Careers’ zero-cost tutoring, mentoring, and family programs for underserved youth in Annapolis.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Collector’s Choice

The Maryland Federation of Art is hosting its annual Collector’s Choice fundraiser this weekend. It’s like playing the lottery but there’s more. . . actual winning. When you show up, you get a number. When your number is pulled, you pick a piece of art and take it home! You can attend in person (at Volvo Cars Annapolis) or join online on 10/22. Tickets.

P.S. Collector’s Choice is also unique because one ticket gets two people in. And although Scoop is solidly not a fan of participation trophies, we do like that everyone takes something home.

Navy wins on the road with freshman QB

Good news and bad news. The good news is Navy won a 14–0 shutout over Charlotte this weekend. The bad news is the quarterback situation is deteriorating. After sophomore Blake Horvath got hurt last week. Senior Tai Lavatai came in and saved the day. This week, Tai got hurt which forced freshman Braxton Woodson into the game.

The game was scoreless until the third quarter when Woodson hit sophomore slotback Eli Heidenreich for a 69-yard touchdown. Navy’s other points on the day came from another huge play when sophomore Alex Tecza sprinted 62 yards for a touchdown. It’s the first time since 2008 that Navy has recorded two shutouts in one season. ($)
