TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Friendly reminder that tomorrow is April Fools’ Day. So if someone offers you a candy bar, you immediately say no and get the hell out of there cause there's a good chance that little son of a gun has just pooped inside of a Butterfinger wrapper.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • MLK Parade and African Diaspora Festival

  • Community grant recipients

  • Saturdays at the Farmers’ Market

Let’s get to it.

P.S. Can you keep a secret? Crab Cake Reviews with Wes & Ryan return for Season 2 on May 13.

Scoop’s interpretation of European settlers landing in Maryland in 1634

There’s so much happening in Annapolis this weekend you’d need a time machine and 9 lives to do it all. But as far as I know, no cats read Naptown Scoop (they have trouble clicking the little CAPTCHA buttons).

So read the rest of the Scoop, check the most comprehensive list of Maryland Day events you’ll find anywhere, and make your plan.

Naval Academy alumni center name revealed

The Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation revealed the name of its new 65,000-square-foot facility this week. If you, like me, ogle the construction every time you drive King George Street, feast your eyes.

The $36 million facility was funded entirely by donors from 37 USNA graduating classes. Much of that came from Donna K. and Frederick K. Fluegel (Class of ‘61) so the new center will be called the Fluegel Alumni Center. Construction should be complete by June with center hosting its first events this fall.

Community Grant recipients

The City of Annapolis announced the 10 recipients of the 2023 Community Grants. During last year’s budget process, Ward 4 Alderwoman Sheila Finlayson created an amendment that added $200,000 of one-time funding for organizations who “adopt a community” to provide resources and support. Here are the Groups - and the communities they adopted.

  • Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Scholarship Trust - Annapolis Gardens

  • The Annapolis All-Stars II - Woodside Gardens and Wilbourn Estates

  • Charting Careers, Inc - Obery Court in College Creek Terrace and Clay Street

  • John Wesley United Methodist Church - Bay Ridge Gardens

  • Opportunity and Industrialization Center, (OIC) - Clay Street, Obery Court and College Creek Terrace

  • One Annapolis, Inc. - Bywater

  • Organization of Hispanic / Latin Americans of Anne Arundel County, OHLA - Madison Street

  • Restoration Community Development Corporation - Robinwood

  • Street Angels Project - Clay Street

  • Zeta Gamma Foundation of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity - Obery Court in College Creek Terrace

Annapolis High School student earns Dell Scholarship

Congratulations to Annapolis HS senior Marionna Haynes for earning one of just 500 Dell Scholarships across the entire country. The scholarship, funded by the eponymous computer maker, gives Marionna $20,000 for college, a laptop, textbook credits, and access to teletherapy. What’s cool about the Dell Scholarship is it doesn’t just go to the smartest kids. The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation prioritizes desire and ability to overcome barriers over academic performance. In other words, if Marionna has a goal, stay out of the way.

Adult Easter Egg Hunt at Night

How do you make something already fun, more fun? Do it at night. See: Campfires, college football games, and. . . Easter egg hunts. Tomorrow night from 8 – 10 PM, hundreds of eggs will be hidden outside the Pip Moyer Recreation Center. And like all good egg hunts, there are prizes inside. Some worth over $50! Sorry, kids. I know that’s like a year’s allowance but this one’s 18+.

In-person registration at Pip Moyer Recreation Center is required. Register before 6 PM and it’s $20. Wait until after 6 PM and it’s $25. You snooze, you lose. 273 Hilltop Lane, Annapolis, MD 21403. Rain date: 4/2 same place, same time.

This will never happen again

One night each week (Wednesday), I become a football fanatic – the European kind. Fellow fans of a quippy, optimistic, and mustachioed coach from Kansas will understand. On Wednesday, May 10, I just found out I’m getting a double helping of the beautiful game.

Our Annapolis Blues are playing their first ever game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. And like the great philosopher Kenny Chesney once said, that just don’t happen twice. The Blues will play a pre-season friendly match called Community Shield against the Philadelphia Union Development Squad. Community Shield will be an annual game benefitting a local charity. This inaugural Community Shield supports Rebuilding Together Anne Arundel County. Tickets are available now.
