THE DIGEST

Alleged cyberattack on Anne Arundel County 💻

Anne Arundel County is dealing with what official reports are calling a “cyber incident of external origin.” If you read between the lines (or the unofficial reports), it looks like a cyberattack. Eye on Annapolis even went as far as to claim it was a ransomware attack – which is when someone holds an organization’s data hostage until they pay up.

What we know for sure is that the county posted that some public services were down at 10:15 AM on Saturday. On Sunday afternoon, they said they expect this to be a multi-day event. By 7:30 PM on Sunday, the county announced that public buildings would be closed today. Schools will still be open.

The best place to get updates is the Anne Arundel County X account.

Parking fines via text? Nope, that’s a scam 🛑

Hit the brakes before you pay that parking fine you found out about via text. Annapolis Park doesn’t collect fines by email or text, and they’ve heard from a few residents that they’ve received scam messages. So if you get one, don’t click the link and don’t pay the fine. Funny enough, my wife got one just before I edited this. If you’ve been scammed, call Annapolis Police on the nonemergency line at 410-268-4141.

Teen pilot is safe after plane crash ✈️

We’ll start with the good news: The pilot is safe. Now the bad news: This pilot crashed their plane. The pilot in question is an 18-year-old, whose name hasn’t been disclosed, who was flying a single-engine Cessna aircraft over Anne Arundel County this weekend. The plane lost power and had to make an emergency landing — and if you were driving along Shoreham Beach Road and Triton Beach Road in Mayo this weekend, you may have noticed road closures or even an investigation. The pilot went to the hospital for injury treatment, and the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration have responded to the crash. That’s about all that’s made known to the public as of right now.

🤔 What’s going on with planes lately? There’s nothing to suggest this crash in Mayo is connected with other (some more serious) crashes that have happened around the country. It may just be the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon — as in, once you hear about something, you’re more likely to notice it.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Restaurant week is in full swing now

So Annapolis Restaurant Week has officially started and every day, a different member of Scoop’s team will be sharing what they’re most excited about. Dylan went on Friday. I, Scoop Publisher Ryan, will be attempting to share some restaurants that may not be top of mind.

🇮🇹 Cafe Mezzanotte. This Italian joint is unassuming. Given it’s location on the side of Ritchie Highway next to a bowling alley, it’s easy to miss. But that would be a shame because it’s fantastic. Their special menu includes 4 courses with lots of choices. Here are mine:

Primi: Pheasant Cannelloni
Secondi: Grilled Caesar Salad
Terzi: Risotto Avgo Lemono
Quarti: House Tiramisu

🇮🇪 Galway Bay. The only restaurant on Maryland Avenue and one of the only bars in Annapolis without a TV. It’s a lovely (and tasty) step back in time. And obviously, they pour one of the best Guinness in Annapolis. They have special menus for lunch and dinner. These are my choices for dinner.

First course: Irish Onion Ale Soup
Second course: Orange Jameson Whiskey Sticky Ribs
Dessert: Lemon Berry Mascarpone Cake

Restaurant Week runs through March 2. You can see all participating restaurants right here.

Forever 21 closing 🛍

Turns out Forever 21 is just a name after all. As the company prepares to file for bankruptcy, it has announced it will close 200 of its stores, including the location at the Annapolis Mall. Its last day is TBA, as is what business will be taking its place at the mall. Don’t ask Scoop writer Dylan his opinion — he’s still mourning the loss of the Borders at Annapolis Mall. It’s been since 2011, Dylan. . . ($)

JK, I love a good bookstore, too.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Fundraiser Focus 🔍

We’re spotlighting another nonprofit bringing vibrancy to Annapolis’ arts scene. On any given day at Maryland Hall, you’ll find ballerinas twirling, artists sculpting, musicians playing, or other creatives at work. Partners, members, sponsors, and donors help make the arts accessible to all through scholarships and tuition waivers.

🎨 Our favorite way to support Maryland Hall? Attending their fabulous events! One on our radar is "Women in the Arts" on March 24 at 6 PM. It unites notable local artists and the community to honor trailblazing women who’ve shaped the arts and continue to inspire change. Enjoy live music, galleries, refreshments, and networking. Me Ra Koh—one of Sony’s first female Ambassadors and nationally recognized as The Photo Mom—who’s overcome homelessness, abuse, and family trauma, will give an inspiring talk. With 120,000+ annual visitors, this event embodies Maryland Hall’s belief: "The Hall is Home." Reserve your seat.

Hagins wins Brigade Boxing Championships 🥊

USNA’s EJ Hagins became only the 25th four-time winner in the history of the Boxing Brigade, the championship for the academy’s intramural boxing program. Hagins, a senior hailing from El Paso, might’ve strayed from his coach’s game plan, but his punches were enough for a unanimous decision victory over his opponent Isaia Togia (not to mention a standing ovation). South River girls basketball named county champs 🏀

The Lady Seahawks soared above all the competition in Anne Arundel this season and claimed the title of county basketball champs in their final game against Annapolis 51-27. It was a tough game, but the South River girls pulled ahead and maintained their unbeaten record this season. This is the second year in a row the South River girls basketball team has won the title of county champions. ($)
