County blocks Harvey Blonder's hotel, tax free back to school, first responder tax credit...

Good morning, Annapolis. Last week we ran a story about some good people that saved a dog from a hot parked car downtown. Then Scoop reader and electric car advocate Mary Bloom reminded us that if a lonely dog is in a Tesla, check the screen inside. Teslas have a cool feature (literally) where drivers can leave the AC/heat on and check in on their dog via video camera.

Let’s get to it.

Million Dollar Matchmaker

Don’t worry, this isn’t reality TV, just a Brad Kappel ad. Thanks to an extensive database of Annapolis’ most affluent home seekers, Brad Kappel is able to sell homes for Top Dollar with astonishing speed. Here’s an example.

Brad listed and sold the home pictured above on the same day. And he earned his sellers several percentage points above the going square foot rate.

It’s just another reason Brad Kappel is the #1 Waterfront Realtor in Maryland. Make Your Move with Brad Kappel.

THE DIGEST

CORRECTION

An article we linked yesterday incorrectly stated that the National Park Service would be able to buy the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse under some new proposed legislation in Congress. This is incorrect. The City of Annapolis would continue to own the lighthouse and the United States Lighthouse Society would continue to operate tours while the Park Service would provide publicity and brochures. It’s also important to note that the proposed legislation is still far from law.

Always read the books they try to ban 📚🍺

Forward Brewing, Crooked Crab Brewing Co., Pherm Brewing Co, and Hysteria Taphouse have all teamed up with the Anne Arundel County Public Library to create beers inspired by banned books. Each brewery has an exclusive book-based brew (for example: Hysteria’s Where the Wild Brews Are) and 20% of the profits from each release event will go to AACPL:

August 10, 4 – 7 PM: Crooked Crab Brewing August 18, 4 – 7 PM: Pherm Brewing August 24, 4 – 7 PM: Hysteria Taphouse

🚒 Woodland Beach VFD chooses new location

Woodland Beach Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) has done great work out of 529 Londontown Road since 1946. But like most buildings that predate the integration of the MLB, it’s a little. . . dated. The VFD had planned to build on Solomons Island Rd but thanks to a land grand from the county, it will now build a new 25,000 square foot facility on Stepneys Lane between Central Elementary and Central Special School. The strategic new location will allow firefighters to respond to even more communities faster than ever. Construction has now entered the design and permitting phase.

LOCAL BUSINESS

County blocks Harvey Blonder’s Liberty Marina Hotel

Anne Arundel County’s Office of Administrative Hearings declined to grant an exception to add a 198-room hotel, 13 condos, and three restaurants to Liberty Marina this week. While the application was portrayed as adding a hotel to a marina, the hearing officers saw it as an attempt to entirely rezone the property and blocked it. Blonder’s architect told the Capital that they’ve already filed an appeal and he hopes the issue will be heard this fall. ($)

🥒🌟 Dinner Under the Stars

Here’s a pickle-themed date idea: Slam a couple pickleback shots, order a burger with extra pickles, then hit the pickleball court. I know somewhere you can do all of that in a 150 foot radius. It’s called Dinner Under the Stars. Every Wednesday, your favorite West Street restaurants, pickleball, and live music (this week it’s Spice Trio) take over West Street between Church Circle and Calvert Street from 6–10 PM.

CIVIL NEWS

9-1-1, I’d like to report a tax credit

The city council voted unanimously last week to give property tax credit to first responders. Police officers, firefighters, and 911 specialists can earn up to a $2,500 tax credit if they live in city bounds. Even though only 8 of the city’s 250 fire and police employees own homes within city limits and are therefore eligible for the credit, it’s still a nice “thank you” for those who work hard to protect us. Even the police union praised the move, which is like getting a compliment from your very hard to please aunt. ($)

Get your head in the zone

Executive Steuart Pittman released preliminary region + zoning maps and wants your help to review them. Why is this important? Zoning impacts planned land use, environmental protection, transit improvements, community design, and more.

Check out the drafts and leave comments here through August 28, or drop into a session to speak with staff.

  • Region 4: Broadneck peninsula and Lake Shore peninsula including communities Pasadena, Gibson Island, Severna Park, Arnold, Cape St. Claire, and Broadneck. August 7, 11 AM – 7 PM, Severna Park Library | August 23, 11 AM – 7 PM, Broadneck Library

  • Region 7: Greater Annapolis, Parole, Riva, Annapolis Neck, Bay Ridge, and Highland Beach. August 15, 11– 6 PM, Independence Room at 2664 Riva Road (Heritage Complex).
