Parking petition, we still need bus drivers, summer league basketball...

The Barber Who Moonlights as an Author 💇‍♂️ ✍️
by Lauren Burke Meyer
We love a classic Clark Kent/Superman story: i.e. journalist by day, superhero by night. Family Barber Shop Owner Nicholas Triantafilledes — aka A.T. Nicholas, aka Nick — has his own unexpected combination of talents. Barber by day, thriller author by night.
For this barber shop, the name says it all. Nick, his father (Trifon Triantafilledes), and his uncle (Louie Trindos) started the shop together in 1989.
Nick’s father and uncle were born in Greece and came to America in the sixties. While both men have passed, their stellar reputations live on.
Thirty-four years later, Nick — a first-generation Greek American born in D.C. — continues the tradition of treating customers like family. Nick, who has “eaten, drank, lived, and worked in Annapolis for 40+ years,” offers all customers a frosty (and free) glass of Heineken (Nick’s fav).
Nick’s customers are a helpful source of information for his books thanks to having worked for the FBI, NSA, CIA, law enforcement, and more. Everybody knows there are no secrets in a barber’s chair.
The proud father of 2 kids began writing as a creative outlet. Since 1998 he’s written four books - The Fist of God, The Reflection of Evil, Father’s Day, and his latest book, Term Limits. All books are either sequels or connected in some way, plus the settings are mostly in Annapolis. Besides being a conspiracy novel, Term Limits is also a “whodunit?”
Nick’s books are available in paperback and eBook format through Amazon. And of course you can get a copy at the Family Barber Shop. Nick will even sign it for you. The perfect reading material for a ✂️+ 🍺 IMO.

THE DIGEST
Want to fire up any Annapolitan?
It only takes one word. Parking. One group of Ward 1 residents is so fed up with Premium Parking (Annapolis’ new parking management company) that they created an online petition. Demands center around ease of use – or lack thereof. As of writing, it had almost 500 signatures.
Premium Parking told the Capital it’s aware of the petition but many demands would require changing City Ordinances. The City of Annapolis said there are no open complaints with the ombudsman and that all complaints should be lodged directly with Premium.
Though I don’t live downtown, I had a Premium Parking problem recently. I parked in the Hillman Garage, paid for Zone 8926 in the app just like the signs instructed, then got a $50 ticket in the mail claiming I didn’t pay. Maybe I should have paid for Zone P4902 (the other zone on the signs). Either way, the ticket was instantly voided when I uploaded my receipt showing payment for 8926. ($)
AACPL x Maryland Hall ticket giveaway
Arthur said it best: “Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card.” AACPL announced a new partnership with Maryland Hall this week. 28 lucky library cardholders will win 2 free tickets to a Maryland Hall Presents show. The rules: you must formally enter and be an AACPL cardholder. Shoot your shot here (because you sure as heck aren’t gonna win the Powerball).
We still need bus drivers, but we’re doing better
This time last year, AACPS had 418 teacher vacancies and needed 72 more bus drivers. This year, those numbers are only 247 and 20 respectively. Which is good because school starts in 24 days (sorry, kids). An AACPS spokesperson said teams are working “night and day” to fill all the vacancies while others are discussing ways to make up any shortfalls should AACPS be unable to fill the roles. AACPS also needs 44 crossing guards, 100 food service workers, 37 custodians, and 2 athletic trainers. Weekly updates are available here. ($)

Annapolis Summer Basketball League championship
Basketball’s best-kept secret, the Annapolis Summer Basketball League, hosts its championship game Friday (8/4). If the price (free!) and fun (food trucks!) don’t convince you, maybe the court drama will. Borden Insurance, a first-year franchise, faces Harris & Sons, the most decorated team in Summer League history. Borden hopes to be just the second first-year team ever to win a championship. Harris is looking for its 13th. 8/4 at 8:30 PM at Truxtun Park.
