Navy’s new AD is living his dream, Summer concert series roundup, Juneteenth celebrations...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. My dog wanted to write today’s intro.

Hi. I love you even though I don’t know you. Anyway, go outside. Sniff everything. Roll in something weird. Life’s short.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Navy’s new AD is living his dream

  • Summer concert series roundup

  • Juneteenth celebrations

Let’s get to it.

Brad Kappel’s Home of the Week: Savannah Charm in Annapolis

Looking for timeless style and peaceful water views?

1241 Cherry Tree Lane blends Savannah-inspired architecture with quiet luxury in Annapolis’ highly-desirable Fishing Creek Farm neighborhood. Thoughtfully designed to frame water on both sides, the home offers beautiful views of Cherry Tree Cove and Duvall Creek from nearly every room.

Inside, you’ll find gracious living spaces — a welcoming foyer, formal rooms with custom built-ins, a well-appointed gourmet kitchen, and a three-season porch made for relaxed mornings or evening gatherings.

Five bedrooms and 5.5 baths provide space for family and guests, including a private suite above the garage. The finished lower level offers room to unwind with a game area, wet bar, and more. A detached office/studio adds extra flexibility.

Community amenities like the pool, tennis courts, beach, and a marina — all moments from home – complete the neighborhood. And downtown Annapolis is just a short drive away.

To arrange a private showing, contact Brad Kappel today.

Dog of the Week: Meet Ocean 🌊 🐾

You’re not lost at sea. You’re just lost in Ocean’s eyes – cue the Billie Eilish. This handsome boy is looking for his fur-ever family. The five-year-old Alaskan Husky mix loves long walks (and runs) on the beach. Like the Scoop staff, he’s motivated by food. Which is great, because it’ll make obedience training easier. Just ask someone with a non-food-motivated dog (like me). Bring a treat for your “meet cute” at Wing 3 of the SPCA of Anne Arundel County. You’ll be fast friends — especially if you love to run, too.

Navy’s new AD is living his dream

If at first you don’t succeed, apply again 24 years later. Ask Michael Kelly. He just landed his lifelong dream job — 24 years after first applying. The DC native and son of a 1967 Naval Academy grad was recently named Navy’s athletic director, succeeding longtime AD Chet Gladchuk. Kelly grew up going to Navy games and first applied in 2001, but the job went to Gladchuk who put up some seriously impressive numbers.

  • During those 24 years, Kelly built his own impressive resume with leadership roles at colleges, college conferences, and even Super Bowl host committees.

Annapolis may hand off old Public Works site to resilience authority

The City and County are working together to come up with options for cleaning up a contaminated site on Spa Road. The site, located near Weems Whalen Field, housed an incinerator between 1934 and 1949, and prior to that, a landfill. Last May, City Council tagged the property for development, but plans hit a snag when an environmental study found arsenic and chromium. If the City can transfer ownership of the property to the Resilience Authority of Annapolis, it will allow them to apply for an EPA grant to clean up the area. This, in turn, would allow the City to move forward on developing 365 units of mixed-income housing to Eastport Terrace and Harbor House. Mayor Gavin Buckley is expected to introduce legislation on the matter next month. ($)

LOCAL BUSINESS

Vivi’s Chicken n’ Mac coming to Arnold?

Is Vivi’s Chicken n’ Mac going to wing it when it comes to an opening date for their Arnold location? The locally-owned chain opened its first store in Edgewater in April. Now it’s set to expand into the College Parkway Center anchored by Green Valley Marketplace. There’s no official opening date – because of permitting – even though the restaurant was slated for a spring opening. Owners Michele and Gennaro DiMeo hope to open two more locations, one in Annapolis and another in Hanover, before the end of the year, but no specific plans have been announced. ($)

🍝 The DiMeos have been involved in some of Annapolis’ favorite restaurants. They started Café Mezzanotte (now owned by Tommie Koukoulis). They are the franchisors of Squisito. They started Tuscan Prime (now under new management and renamed Cavalli). And they own Carpaccio.

Gotta Have HeArt Studio opens 🎨

Just in time for summertime creativity, Gotta Have HeArt Studio celebrates its grand opening with a ribbon cutting this Saturday at 10 AM. The new business, located at 568 Governor Ritchie Highway, Suite E, in Severna Park, offers hands-on workshops, art classes, and other programs to help nurture young artists. Owners Jennifer MacRobbie and Christine Martel say they believe art has the power to transform perspectives and bring people together, so stop by to meet them as their business gets its stArt.

New Puppy This Summer? Let’s Make It a Good One.

Summer’s the perfect time for walks on the beach, belly rubs, and bonding with a new puppy. But it also means heat waves, bug bites, and a million questions about what’s safe. Like do they need booties for a walk if it’s 90º?

Western Shore Veterinary Hospital is here to help — from first vaccines to beach-day tips and everything in between. Their team knows what it takes to keep puppies healthy (and out of trouble) all summer long.

Because raising a dog isn’t just cute — it’s a commitment. And you don’t have to do it alone.
