THE DIGEST
🌟 AACPS educator wins another teaching award 🌟
For Maryland State Teacher of the Year Mary Kay Connerton, the awards keep rolling in. She just earned the Travelers Insurance Award for Teaching Excellence! Mary has worked for Anne Arundel County Public Schools for 15 years and is the school system’s wellness coordinator. Previously, at Annapolis High, she created the school’s Trauma-Informed Leadership Team, led monthly counseling groups (such as yoga sessions), and organized professional development for teachers focusing on student health and wellness. Keep up the great work, Mary Kay! 👏 ($)
Free Gun Locks 🔐
The Department of Health’s Gun Violence Intervention Team is partnering with Anne Arundel County Public Libraries to distribute free gun safety locks to all county residents ages 18 and up. In 2023, the county saw 18 gun-related homicides and 23 gun-related suicides. The aim is to increase gun safety, reduce unintentional injuries, and save lives.
You don’t need a library card or ID to participate. Each household can receive two free locks, and you may visit any library again for more. Please don’t bring firearms to the library when picking up locks. Find a library branch near you. See instructions and video on how to use the lock.

The golf league that never gets canceled for bad weather
Sounds too good to be true – golf without fear of rain, cold, or wind. But it happens at X-Golf daily. And they're stoked to announce the first-ever Annapolis Golf Club League. Here's the deal.
The league starts October 2 and runs for 8 weeks (including playoffs). 2-person teams face off weekly in a scramble format. $250 per person ($200 for X-Golf members) gets you all 8 weeks – a near 50% discount on 8 regular rounds. And of course, the winners get a trophy and gift cards.
Visit XGolfAnnapolis.com to sign up or stop in at 167 Jennifer Road, Suite Y.
P.S. X-Golf is also the most fun way to watch any NFL game. They have 14 TVs with RedZone, a full bar and kitchen, and obviously, golf!
WHAT’S HAPPENIN’
9/11 Heroes Run 👟
It feels as if there’s never enough we could ever do honor the memory of those lost on 9/11 or the sacrifices that heroes made on that day and in days that followed. But one goal of the Pennsylvania-based Travis Manion Foundation is to bring communities together across the country to fulfill the promise all of us made 23 years ago: Never forget.
Annapolis will be one of many communities holding Hero Runs, and there’s still time to register for the run on Sunday at 11 AM at Navy Stadium. 5K and 1-mile options take you along the footpath around Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and through surrounding residential roads. Funds raised further the Travis Manion Foundation’s mission of supporting veterans and families of the fallen.
Bedtime Book Buddies 🐶📚😻
Animals + Books = Best night ever!
PAWS at the Mall and Bedtime Book Buddies welcomes readers 5-10 years old the 2nd Thursday of each month from 6–7 PM. This month’s meeting is September 12. Discoveries: The Library at the Mall hosts fun literary evenings for both readers and animals including adoptable cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and more. Help lull your new furry friends into a peaceful slumber. Participants (aka humans) can read aloud, sing, recite poetry, or study in a calm environment. Sign up!
Literacy Council book sale 📚
Take note, bookworms — the Anne Arundel Literacy Council’s annual book fair is coming up on September 28, 10 AM–4 PM, outside Discoveries: the Library at the Mall. More than 75 groups, schools, and book clubs donated used books for this year’s fair, so there will be plenty of reading material for all ages and interests to look through. Proceeds from sales help the council’s adult literacy tutoring programs throughout the county. Get info.
Steins and canines at Barktoberfest 🐶
Mark your calendars for a pawsitively exciting day at Barktoberfest on October 5, 11 AM–7 PM, at Annapolis Town Center. It’s a celebration that boasts all the traditions of a good Oktoberfest — beer and German food, of course — but dogs are invited to this one (just make sure they’re friendly and leashed). There will be stein holding contests for the humans and fashion/costume contests for the four-legged attendees. Get info and register.
Countdown to Burning of Peggy Stewart anniversary
Here’s the tea: Annapolis will be recognizing the 250th anniversary of a major historic event on October 19. On that day in 1774, Annapolis sparked Maryland’s participation in the American Revolution when colonists burned the Peggy Stewart, a merchant ship carrying tea. This Annapolis Tea Party, as it’s come to be known, took place right in our downtown harbor — and we can all witness a reenactment of it at 7 PM on October 19 right there where it happened 250 years ago. The #2 way to make nonprofit fundraisers better
What’s the first way? No idea. But the #2 way is definitely luxury bathroom trailers. People have called Royal Flush’s bathrooms the “nicest bathrooms I’ve ever seen” and “better than the bathrooms in my house.” And that’s not made-up marketing talk. Those are real quotes I heard at a party last weekend. Want your guests to say the same? Studies show that guests who like the bathrooms donate more+. Call Royal Flush at 410-881-6848 to secure the finest bathrooms in town.*
+ We made this up but the quotes are real
