Annapolis Hope update, Annapolis Blues tryouts, Freezin' for a reason...

Good morning, Annapolis. Now that we’re 1 whole month into 2024, how are those resolutions going?

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Annapolis Blues tryouts

  • Polar Bear Plunge

  • All-Star Classic

Let’s get to it.

Huge update for Annapolis Hope

Back in October, the Brian and Patricia Giese Foundation announced it would match $25,000 in donations for Annapolis Hope. I am stoked to reveal that we just hit that number. And I’m even more stoked to say Brian and Patricia’s gift pushes Annapolis Hope over $100,000 in donations. But we still need your help.

We still need $150,000 to save the Mireles family home.

Today, I’m calling in the big guns. The philanthropists who can write $25,000 checks. The real estate teams that can organize match campaigns with their agents. The people who can help us move the needle towards keeping this family in their home after tragedy stole their breadwinner.

If you want to help in a big way, reply to this email and we’ll respond promptly.

And if you can’t write a $10,000 check (it’s ok, I can’t either), we need your help too. Every dollar counts.

Resort-like living at Chesapeake Harbour ⛵

Do you want home to feel like vacation? This condo may be perfect for you.

This 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom unit in the gated community of Chesapeake Harbour is filled with amenities and stunning water views. It’s everything you need for an exciting waterfront lifestyle. Tennis courts, swimming pools, a private beach and marina. . .

The home itself has a wood-burning fireplace in its spacious dining and living area, panoramic views from the living room balcony, a newly renovated Tuscan-style kitchen, and so much more.

THE DIGEST

Ringing in the end of the semester

Don’t ask Hemingway for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for the Johnnies. If you hear bells downtown overnight Saturday, it’s because St. John’s College seniors have turned in their senior essays. As part of an annual tradition, after turning in their papers, the 100 seniors each get one celebratory peal on the McDowell Hall bell between midnight and 1:30 AM.

Wait, doesn’t Annapolis have a noise ordinance?

Yes, but since Annapolis is a city of tradition, St. John’s itself was founded in 1696, the Mayor’s Office grants a special exception for this. 🔔

What does Zero Waste really mean? ♻️

Kermit the Frog says it’s not easy being green, but I beg to differ. If you attended the Military Bowl in December, did you know almost nothing went to the landfill? Thanks to local nonprofit Annapolis Green. . .

  • Over 2 tons of food waste will be composted instead of heading for landfills

  • 860 pounds of aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and cardboard were recycled

  • Even the plastic film from water bottles is being recycled – three 55-gallon bags of it!

We want to give a major shoutout to Annapolis Green and the Military Bowl for looking out for us.

USNA Class of ’24 Ship Selection ⚓️

Tomorrow (2/1) at 6:15 PM, about 250 midshipmen from the Class of 2024 set to commission as Surface Warfare Officers (SWO) will choose their first ship and homeport during Ship Selection. The mids pick based on rank in the Brigade – AKA order of merit. Different placard colors dictate who can pick which ship. Here’s an explanation from navalacademytourism.com:

  • White: Conventional SWO & engineering duty officers (EDO)

  • Yellow: Conventional SWO, SWO EDO, nuclear SWO

  • Green: Information warfare

  • Red: Nuclear SWO who will attend Navy nuclear power training

  • Blue: A highly coveted direct invitation from a ship’s commanding officer based on Summer Cruise performance

Ship Selection 2022

Ship Selection isn’t open to the public but will be live-streamed on YouTube.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Want to be in a classic play?

Colonial Players of Annapolis is holding auditions for the upcoming production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time this weekend. Read the character breakdown and download the audition form if you’re interested. Auditions are February 4 at 2 PM & February 5 at 7 PM at the company’s annex – 2132 Renard Court, Annapolis, MD 21401. Invitation-only callbacks are February 7 at 7 PM.

Freezin’ for a reason

Who says you have to wait for summer to hit the beach? Thousands of warm-hearted thrill-seekers will “bear” the cold this weekend for the Polar Bear Plunge, a longtime tradition raising funds for MD’s Special Olympics.

How does it work? Just tell people you’re jumping into the Bay this weekend. If they want to support your crazy stunt, they donate to your fundraising campaign. This year’s goal is $4 million.

Any level of plunging counts, even just ankles — though we’re advocates of the full dunk! Scoop writer Dylan will be doing that. The Plunge is Saturday, February 3 at 11 AM, 1 PM, or 3 PM at Sandy Point State Park with lots of other festivities.

Ready to freeze your fur off? It’s not too late to register!
