Survey to report Debby storm damage

Our hearts are with anyone suffering damages from Tropical Depression Debby. ❤️ If you’re in that boat, the City of Annapolis created a self-reporting damage assessment tool (aka, a survey). The Office of Emergency Management encourages residents and business owners within the Annapolis city limits impacted by the storm on August 8–9, 2024 to complete the voluntary survey. To verify your property is within the municipal limits of the City of Annapolis, use the Ward Look Up tool.

A damage assessment team from City Planning and Zoning will assess affected infrastructure, businesses, and residences as it is safe to do so. The Annapolis Call Center (410-260-2211) can answer questions on this survey.

P.S. For any properties outside of Annapolis, contact Anne Arundel County's Office of Emergency Management at 410-222-0600 or [email protected].

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

1 month countdown: AA County Fair 🐮

You might think of Annapolis as suburban or even urban, but there was a time when most of Anne Arundel County was farmland — hence why the County Fair continues to be such a popular local tradition to celebrate this part of our heritage. Mark your calendars, because the fair will be held September 11–15 this year.

Fair organizers promise 5 days of contests, shopping, eating, and entertainment, including The Amish Outlaws performing on Saturday night. Plus, 4H clubs will have livestock shows and sales. (1450 Generals Highway, Crownsville, MD). Get details.

Theater Talk Tuesday 🎭

You know you can count on us for a run-down every Tuesday of what’s coming soon to a stage near you. But if you’re trying to plan a little further out? That’s where our Ultimate Guide to the 2024–25 Theater Season comes in handy. It’s got the slate for all the local theater companies and when each of their productions runs. Be sure to check it out and get your must-see shows on the calendar.

This week:

2 assistant principals join AACPS 🍎 🍎

It takes a village to raise a child. Luckily, the Benfield Elementary School (BES) and Severna Park Elementary School (SPES) villages just grew. Missy Fuson joined BES, while Cheryl Slack started at SPES, both as assistant principals for the 2024–2025 school year. This is the first time either school has appointed someone to the role. Both women bring extensive teaching experience to their first administrative roles.

Dark Storm victory in Governor’s Cup ⛵️

Sometimes the best plan is to adapt. That certainly seemed to be what helped Ken Comerford, skipper of the J/121 Dark Storm, win the ORC 1 class in the Maryland Governor’s Cup on August 3. Comerford and his team closely monitored the weather models and took advantage of an overnight wind shift, ultimately securing them a victory and the Joseph Waldschmitt Memorial Trophy for top overall performance. A special Navy football practice 🥇

Chreign LaFond, defensive end for Navy Football, had a practice last week that he will never forget. When he and his teammates were practicing here in Annapolis, Coach Brian Newberry got word that LaFond’s sister, Thea LaFond, took gold in the women’s triple jump in the Olympics across the Atlantic in Paris.

Coach Newberry stopped practice to deliver the good news, and the video of it that went viral on X is definitely worth a watch. Congrats to Thea LaFond on her gold medal . . . and may the wins keep coming for the LaFond family! 😉 ⚓ ($)
