Fall Festival, ivy busters, who is Samara Firebaugh...
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. Happy Monday. May your coffee be strong and your second coffee be stronger.
In todayâs Naptown Scoop:
Surfing in the Bay
Ivy busters
Homestead Gardens Fall Festival
Letâs get to it.
âRyan Sneddon & Rebecca Kraybill
P.S. Happy Birthday to Tim Gough! Hope itâs a good one.
Itâs still anyoneâs hunt
The Western Shore Veterinary Hospital Great Naptown Scavenger Hunt of 2023 is officially on! Only one team submitted challenges yesterday so theyâre obviously in the lead but since we moved the hunt (thanks, Ophelia. . .), teams have all of this week and next weekend to submit challenges so Iâm sure weâll have some lead changes.
Itâs also not too late to join.
If you want to have fun all over town and compete for $400 in prizes, click here to play. Registration is open all week long.
SPONSORED BY MURTHY FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY
Dr. Namita Murthy is pleased to introduce FaceTite. In fact, sheâs the only plastic surgeon in Annapolis offering FaceTite. So, what is FaceTite?
Think of FaceTite like a facelift without big incisions.
For a normal facelift, Dr. Murthy cuts in the hairline near your temple and around your ear to the lower scalp. She redistributes fat and tissue, redrapes the skin, and trims the excess. Very safe, but still a major surgery.
With FaceTite, Dr. Murthy makes a series of pinhole incisions â so small they donât even need stitches. She first removes any excess fat and then uses radiofrequency waves (which also stimulate collagen production) to tighten and remodel skin. Itâs done under local anesthesia with minimal recovery time.
FaceTite is a major breakthrough in facial contouring. Nothing else this minimally invasive even comes close to matching facelift results the way FaceTite does.
If your face and neck arenât as tight as youâd like, schedule a comfortable and personalized consultation with Dr. Murthy today.
Also follow Dr. Murthy on Instagram @drnamitamurthy for more information and future specials!
THE DIGEST
Meet the Naval Academyâs new dean + provost
Samara Firebaugh is the new academic dean and provost at the Naval Academy. Sheâs a familiar face on campus having taught there for 22 years. And although her professional resume is impressive as heck (ask her about microelectromechanical systems), her personal resume is just so damn cool:
She plays drums in a rock cover band with her husband.
She once sang Bohemian Rhapsody in a karaoke bar in Japan with a bunch of scientists.
She started undergrad off pretty rough but nabbed the âmost improvedâ award by graduation.
Congrats on the new gig, Samara. Karaoke soon? ($)
Itâs a beautiful day in the neighborhood đ
Eastport is getting a trolley. Cue up the Mister Rogers theme song. Ok, itâs not quite a Mister Rogers trolley. But use your imagination.
On October 7, Annapolis will start a free electric trolley service in Eastport. Itâs just like the one they ran in Westport (sorry. . . I mean downtown) during the Hillman Garage rebuild. The six-seater will operate on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AMâ6 PM on a 10-minute loop from Norman Drive to Fourth Street.
Since this pilot program is funded through 2024, itâs 100% free. Just flag it down and hop on!
Ivy busters
It may look pretty but ivy + trees = â ď¸đł Thatâs why the County wants to eradicate it. Under the work of forester Earl âBudâ Reaves, county workers are learning to spot and chop invasive vines. According to Reaves, weâve got a lot of catching up to do; he estimates that one-fifth of Anne Arundelâs trees are infected. ($)
Save Our Trees. Want to save some trees yourself? This neighbor-driven group meets regularly to hack at ivy and invasive vines. The next clearing event is October 28.

SPONSORED BY HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE
Did you know hospice is about living?
Hospice care is about helping people live as fully as possible. Hospice of the Chesapeake provides patient-centered care for the body, mind and spirit of those living with a life-limiting illness. Our care focuses on symptom management, planning for the journey and caring for the family.
Did you know hospice isnât just for the very end?
In consultation with their physician, patients can enjoy the benefits of hospice care for months and months. The most frequent comment patients and families share is that they wished they reached out sooner.

WHATâS HAPPENINâ
The best Guys Night of the year is this Thursday
Fellas. If you donât have a ticket to Blazers . Bourbon . Cigars this Thursday, you arenât doing Annapolis right. Itâs one of Historic Annapolisâ most popular fundraisers and Iâll sum up why in 3 reasons: all-inclusive tickets, an amazing group of people, and a killer setting. Tickets start at just $100. 6â9 PM, 9/28 at the William Paca House & Garden.
Literacy Council book sale fundraiser
John Steinbeck once said, âI guess there are never enough books.â Now, an author telling you to buy more books is like a barber saying you need a haircut đ But hereâs something else to expand your shelves.
The Anne Arundel County Literacy Council is holding its 3rd annual fundraiser book fair this Saturday (9/30). There will be hundreds of gently used books in the Annapolis Mall community space near Crate & Barrel from 10 AMâ4 PM.
Itâs $2 for hardcovers and $1 for paperbacks. Or you can grab a Literacy Council tote bag and stuff it with all the books you can carry for $20.
Swim & Paddle South River đś
Is diving into 48â69° water in October your jam? If so, hop into the South River on October 1 to support two local, water-focused nonprofits. Hereâs how it works.
You pick a distance: 5 miles or ½ mile. Then you pick swimming or paddling. And then you do it. Yep, there really is a 5-mile solo swim. Entrance fees support the Live Water Foundation and Arundel Rivers Federation. Register here.

EXTRA SPRINKLES
Healthy teeth, healthy life đś
Dog breath stinks. But like most bad smells, bad dog breath is a sign of something worse â bacteria in their gums that's eating away the jawbone. The best way to prevent this is daily toothbrushing (just like your own gums). But most people don't. The next best thing? Professional dental cleaning done under anesthesia. And the best place to do it is Western Shore Veterinary Hospital.*
