THE DIGEST

⚽ Blues head to ‘Joisey for semifinals

The Annapolis Blues head to New Jersey today (7/21) to play West Chester United in the East Region semifinals. If they win, they play Saturday (7/22) in the East Region final. Kickoff is 4 PM at the Montclair State University soccer park. Tickets are $10 for adults 17+ or $5 for kids under 16.

If driving 216 miles (or any miles on the NJ Turnpike) isn’t your jam, you can watch the live stream from home. Or join a watch party at Forward Brewing or Heroes Pub, streaming live at 4 PM.

What happens when someone on a cargo ship in the bay gets hurt?

Falling from a ladder is no fun under normal circumstances. Falling from a ladder when you’re in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay . . . extra not fun. That happened Monday to a cargo ship worker who fell 10 feet, kicking off an epic water rescue. A helicopter lowered a flight paramedic to the ship, who secured the sailor to a backboard and hoisted him into the chopper. Hats off to the rescue workers. We wish the worker a speedy recovery!

LOCAL BUSINESS

🍰 Sweet Hearts Patisserie grand opening

Eating a macaron is easy. Making a macaron? Not so much. So much so that mixing the batter has its own word: macaronage.

Sweet Hearts Patisserie, home of more fancy words we can’t say, has a new space. The grand reopening is Saturday 8 AM–4 PM with free samples, raffles, and the best macaroons this side of the Champs-Élysées. The first 50 customers receive a complimentary slice of cake. 1410 Forest Drive, Annapolis, MD Suites 11 & 12.

Market House begins paying back rent to city

Context: When it came time to renew Market House’s lease earlier this month, it became clear that the operators of Market House hadn’t provided financial reports to the city and therefore hadn’t paid performance-based rent. If revenue exceeded $1.5 million, they’d owe the landlord (AKA City of Annapolis) 2% of the overage.

The operators are still preparing detailed financial reporting, but they’ve determined they owe about $25k in performance-based rent and have made an initial payment.

Why is this newsworthy? First, Market House is owned by the City of Annapolis. Second, the operating partnership includes Mayor Gavin Buckley’s longtime business partner, Jody Danek. Gavin isn’t involved in the Market House partnership (or the City’s dealings with it for that matter) but it’s brought this under closer scrutiny because. . . politics. ($)

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

👨‍🌾 Market roundup

We love our local farmers . . . they’re outstanding in their fields. Before this gets too corny 🌽 , here’s where you can shop local this weekend:

Anne Arundel County Farmers Market. This local staple is celebrating 42 years. Scoop especially loves the morning buns from Makeathe. 7 AM–12 PM Saturday (7/22) | 9 AM–12 PM Sunday (7/23). 275 Harry S. Truman Pkwy Annapolis, MD 21401.

Wildberry Field Market. Almost 50 local businesses and makers pack the field at Wildberry Farm for a charming market Saturday (7/22) from 9 AM–1 PM (rain date: same time Sunday). See the lineup. 1047 Saint Stephens Church Rd, Crownsville, MD 21032.

Farragut Farmers Market. The Farragut Farmers Market at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium continues weekly through August 20. For its second season, the market has more vendors, yoga, live music, and more. Parking at the stadium is free but so is walking or biking. 9 AM–1 PM Sunday (7/23).

Bay Paddle

You don’t usually hear the words “endurance race” and “paddleboard” in the same sentence. Bay Paddle does just that this weekend. It’s a race organized by Chris Hopkinson, the first guy to stand up paddleboard all 200 miles of the Chesapeake Bay. Don’t worry, the Bay Paddle isn’t that far anymore.

This Saturday (7/22), participants race 24 miles (solo or team) or 12 miles (solo) in the paddle-able vessel of their choice – SUP, outrigger canoe, bathtub (JK no bathtubs). Technically this is in Rock Hall not Annapolis but Chris lives in Arnold and it cleans up the Bay so we’re in. Feeling brave? Registration closes Saturday at 11 AM. Not a paddler? Just go to the after-party :)
