Harbormaster gets 3 DNR grants

While most boaters dread the approach of a DNR boat, the Annapolis Harbormaster’s Office had a great visit with them last week. They just got 3 DNR grants worth $75k each to pay for engineering, design, and dredging at three projects:

  • Engineering and design for a new pier at Fourth Street

  • Engineering and design to replace the bulkhead and floating dock at Shipwright Street

  • Dredging a channel to provide access to the (to be reconstructed) pier on Hawkins Cove

Kidshipmen 2023-2024

Navy Athletics just launched its much-loved Kidshipmen Club for the 2023-2024 sports season. Membership (just $25) gets your kids free admission to the 9/30 football game against USF, a birthday card from Bill the Goat, and much more. If I were a kid, I’d be most excited about the club’s sponsor giveaways from the likes of Annapolis Ice Cream Company, Chick-fil-A, Ledo Pizza, and Fisher’s Popcorn. Membership lasts until May 31, 2024. Click here to learn more.

Help pick the Oktoberfest charity

It’s hot now. But soon the air will turn crisp and you’ll want to do nothing but . . . pull on your lederhosen and drink a beer. The annual West Annapolis Oktoberfest is on September 25 – a street fest packed with food, beer, and fun. They need your help to pick the charity that your “merriment” 🍻 will benefit. Submit your votes by July 25.

  • Scoop fact: Why does September get all the glory of Oktoberfest? Traditionally the fest concludes the first Sunday of October. So organizers work backward to give you plenty of warmer days for beer-drinking.

Scam Alert: Annapolis PD doesn’t request payment over the phone

This one’s been going around recently so let me save you some dough. Annapolis PD will never request payment from you over the phone and they certainly won’t ask you to pay fines by buying gift cards. If someone claiming to be an officer does either of those things, feel free to safely hang up on them.

Teacher Spotlight: Katy Johnston 🧘

“I dabbled with yoga as a dance major in college, but didn’t practice consistently until later in life. Each style I tried was an enjoyable new challenge. Through yoga, I have learned the things that challenge us are often the things we need most. They help us grow physically and mentally.

I’m always a student first and learn as much through teaching as I do practicing. And in addition to yoga’s many health benefits, I’ve met so many amazing and inspiring people. We have such a wonderful, loving yoga family at Yoga Factory and I’m extremely thankful to be a part of the community. —Katy Johnston

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Inaugural Blue Crab Classic Pickleball Tournament Announced

Ball at the Mall, Annapolis’ newest pickleball facility, is wasting no time hosting its first tournament. Thanks to the unified brainpower of Peake Social and the Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce, the Blue Crab Classic is headed to Annapolis Mall August 10–13. The tournament starts Thursday with the Drink & Dink Corporate Challenge followed by a Celebrity Exhibition Match.

Men’s and women’s singles kick off Friday morning followed by the Friday Night Lights Challenge where schoolteachers, admins, and coaches battle it out with entry fees going to the winning school’s PTO or Alumni Foundation. Men’s and women’s doubles follows on Saturday and mixed doubles play Sunday. Click here to sponsor or register.

Pickleball at Truxtun Park is now a little safer

Defibrillators save lives every day. Just ask Damar Hamlin. And with hot temps and the uh, how do I put this . . . the experienced age range of the average pickleballer, Bay Capital Mortgage and the Annapolis Pickleball Club thought it’d be a great idea to put an AED at Truxtun Park. There’s a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 AM today (7/24) so if Truxtun’s your normal dink destination, breathe a little easier knowing if a game is literally heart-stoppingly good, help is nearby.

RUN for The Light House early bird pricing ends this week

The Light House’s 14th annual running fundraiser at Quiet Waters Park is Sunday, September 17. Money raised from this pavement pounding not only meets the basic needs of Annapolis’ homeless but gets at the source of the issue by providing marketable job skills and fighting addiction and health issues. Early bird pricing ends July 31 for the 1.25-mile walk, 5k, and half marathon so if you’re considering it, step to it. We Americans walk a shockingly low amount and it’s super healthy so everyone who can should at least register for the walk.

📽️🚗 Drive-in movie nights are back

Not everything ages well (we see you, leisure suits and perms) but drive-in movies are timeless. SOFO (SOuth FOrest)’s drive-in movie nights return this Friday (7/28) with Free Willy. Movies start at dusk, projected onto the wall of the Bay Ridge Shopping Center. Shoot an email to [email protected] to claim your car’s spot. Once the lot is full you’ll have to BYO seat. See the full lineup.

CIVIL NEWS

Paddington Place shooter faces hate crime charges

43-year-old Charles Robert Smith was already staring a lot of prison time in the face. But with an Anne Arundel County grand jury’s decision that 3 of his 42 charges were “motivated in substantial part” by the race of his victims, it might be even more. Smith’s been charged with three counts of first-degree murder along with six counts of attempted first-degree murder. The maximum sentence for first-degree murder is life without parole; hate crime designations could add 20 years. ($)

Context: Smith is accused of killing 27-year-old Mario Mireles, 55-year-old Nicholas Mireles (Mario’s father), and 25-year-old Christian Segovia at Mario’s house after an alleged parking dispute with Smith’s mother on June 11.

  • Related: With a year-over-year increase in almost every part one crime (those Annapolis PD reports to the state and FBI), Annapolis PD has launched a short-term initiative to increase its presence in areas with the highest concentration of said crimes. ($)

Annapolis Blues finally fall

Annapolis’ first-year NPSL team fell 4–0 in the East Region Semifinal against West Chester United on Friday. United would go on to beat reigning NPSL champion FC Motown on Saturday to advance to the national semifinal this weekend.

And while losing always stings like jumping in the Severn River in July, our Blues had a tremendous first season. They won the Mid-Atlantic Conference Championship with an epic comeback, obliterated NPSL attendance expectations, and show early signs of having a rabid fanbase. So hold your head high, Blues. We’ll see you next season.

—Sincerely, Season Seat Holder #069
