TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Let’s just pretend I wrote a funny joke here and get on with our newslettering, shall we?

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • AACPS redistricting

  • September sunsets

  • A bakery on a boat

Let’s get to it.

Checking in on the Anchors Aweigh Podcast

About a month and a half ago, we teamed up with the legendary Navy sports journalist and lifelong Annapolitan Bill Wagner for two podcasts.

  • The Navy Football Podcast – which Bill started recording after sports returned post-pandemic.

  • Anchors Aweigh Podcast – a new creation between Scoop and Bill that focuses on all Naval Academy sports, not just football.

Since early August, Bill and his Anchors Aweigh co-host Pete Medhurst have interviewed many coaches, players, and alumni. And yesterday, they secured an exclusive interview that will be Anchors Aweigh’s biggest yet. We can’t wait to release it next week.

In the meantime, this week’s episode (#007) is now live. Bill and Pete interviewed Navy’s Deputy Director of Athletics, Eric Ruden, and preview the upcoming weekend where 16 of Navy’s 36 varsity teams are in action. It’s a 42-minute listen. Check it out!

The biggest boat party of the year ⛵

The good old Chesapeake Bay – scenic views, fresh seafood, the intoxicating sense of freedom. . . Isn’t it just so amazing? But it wouldn’t be the same without boats.

And that’s why Annapolis Boat Shows has two great weekends planned for October: the Annapolis Powerboat Show from October 5th to October 8th and the Annapolis Sailboat Show from October 12th to October 15th. Their biggest boat parties of the year!

Boaters, sailors, and dreamers from across the globe gather on beautiful Ego Alley to celebrate that great feeling of being on the water. Whether you're buying a new boat, just learning to boat, or just looking, the Annapolis Boat Shows are for everyone.

Local artist Charlie Mazurek just released his first children’s book Shop Annapolis Cats. 10 cats and 1 mouse team up (#peaceispossible) in an 18th-century Annapolis workshop to raise money for historic preservation.

Get your copy and meet Charlie at the Book Party on Sunday (9/24) from 2–4 PM at 62 Maryland Ave Annapolis, MD 21401

LOCAL BUSINESS

Honeybuns from the Honey Bun 🧁

Medical supplies, livestock, fuel . . . lots of stuff has been delivered by boat throughout history. But I doubt there’s been a more delightful delivery than this. Annapolis’ newest local bakery Cocoa & Pearl delivers handmade pastries in the most Annapolis way possible. From a boat named Honey Bun.

The founder is Hannah Gribbin, an Annapolis native who’s returned after 6 years in the Coast Guard and attending pastry school in Boston. Hannah bakes pies, cupcakes, scones, and more — and she’ll be docked at the Maritime Museum this Saturday (9/23) 9 AM–2 PM. Check out the menu. ($)

Get your tickets before it’s too late. Students and teachers can get 2 free tickets for Friday only by using code REMEMBER at checkout.

CIVIL NEWS

AACPS redistricting meetings announced

The Board of Education is planning to redistrict schools soon to balance enrollment. Kinda like when the flight attendant asks you to give up the window seat because of “weight distribution.” The Phase 1 plan is for northern county systems and would bring new boundaries for 48 schools. The Board will vote on the plan on November 15 for the 2024–2025 school year. Phase 2 (including Annapolis schools) begins in February 2025.

Here’s how you can learn more or give feedback:

  • Public briefing: October 2 at 6 PM, Parham Building

  • Public hearing with the option for public comments: October 16 at 6 PM, Parham Building
