BOE Redistricting Recommendations 🏫
Superintendent Dr. Bedell just turned in two redistricting proposals to the Board of Ed to address growth and overcrowding in central and southern areas of our county. The plans would shift 1,500 (Recommendation #1) or 1,100 students (Recommendation #2). Both plans aim to keep all schools under 100% capacity. Changes include boundary adjustments in the Arundel, Meade, Crofton, and Annapolis clusters, with legacy provisions for rising seniors. Type your address into this map to see potential school changes. The public can comment through September 5, and the Board is expected to adopt a final plan in November for the 2026–27 school year.
Annapolis by the Numbers
The City of Annapolis just released the 2025 annual report. We read all 36 pages so you don’t have to and wanted to share some numbers. And if you’re wondering why the 2025 report comes out halfway through 2025, it’s because the city’s fiscal year ran 7/1/2024 to 6/30/2025.
0 fire-related deaths for the 15th consecutive year, despite how hard your dad tries to ignite himself every time he lights up the grill. Annapolis spent $25.44 million on the fire department and answered over 3,200 fire calls and nearly 10,000 EMS calls.
$400,000. Cost of redesigning the Truxtun Park skate park. You probably know this already from your cranky neighbor who thinks skateboarding is equivalent to a parole violation.
DPW resurfaced 3.55 miles of road, fixed 178 potholes, collected 1,817 tons of recycling, swept 4,304 miles of streets, and replaced 10,000 feet of sidewalks. While the sight of the DPW on Bay Ridge Ave. turns us into rage monsters, these crews are the real superheroes of Annapolis and totally deserve an Edible Arrangement or something.
Commuters took 355,803 rides on public transit and complained during 355,802 of those rides.
January 6 gave us the heaviest snowfall we’ve had in 8 years, which is about the same amount of time it will take my back to heal from shoveling for four days straight.
Central purchasing processed over 1 million purchase orders in FY2025, which is a statistic we’re going to use the next time our postal worker mentions that he’s not supposed to lift anything over 15 pounds.
Operation Osprey Reports Significant Decline on the Severn River
Well, this is just heartbreaking. Operation Osprey, a volunteer group that monitors and surveys osprey populations on the Severn River, reported a significant decline in the number of chicks raised on the River. The issue doesn’t seem to be that the raptors weren’t laying eggs, as egg production initially seemed optimistic earlier in the spring. But as the summer wore on, the monitoring group saw abandoned nests, low live birth numbers, and a low survival rate. Operation Osprey notes that the three biggest factors in the birds’ ability to raise successful offspring are reduced food sources, predators, and climate change. But it’s not clear what the specific problem was this year. To learn more about Operation Osprey and see how you can help make a difference in the raptors’ time on the Bay, click here.

In Annapolis sports news ✌️, St. Mary’s High School has named former Navy baseball coach Paul Kostacopoulos as its new athletic director. Now 60 and more than two years into retirement as the second-winningest coach in Midshipmen baseball history, Kostacopoulos brings decades of coaching experience, including 1,027 career wins and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. He steps into the role on July 30 at a pivotal moment as St. Mary’s expands facilities and moves more teams into top-tier conferences. The New England native fell for St. Mary’s history and its devotion to faith that matched his own. ($)
