Let’s get to it.

How will the Western Shore Veterinary Hospital Great Naptown Scavenger Hunt support local business?

The Harness Creek Hunters during the 2022 Great Naptown Scavenger Hunt

Did you know Naptown Scoop has a 2-part mission statement?

The first part is “Be the best source of local information for Annapolis.” But the second is “Uplift local businesses and content creators.” This weekend’s Scavenger Hunt is one way we fulfill #2.

Over a dozen challenges involve visiting and spending money at locally-owned businesses. But don’t worry. There are over 50 other challenges you can do for $0.

When a whole bunch of teams (last year we had 38!) spend a little bit of money at a locally-owned business, it adds up fast. As as any local business owner will tell you, 70 cents of every dollar you spend at Mom and Pop shops stays local. Compare that to 40 cents at national chains.

So when you compete in the Western Shore Veterinary Hospital Great Naptown Scavenger Hunt, you won’t just be having fun. You’ll be supporting your neighbors!

Brad Kappel doesn’t just sell Annapolis

He sells Arnold, Severna Park, and Edgewater too. This is his newest listing in Arnold. Let’s take a tour.

The most important part of a waterfront home is enjoying the water. This home checks all the boxes – private pier (with boat lift), rear deck and screened porch, even a private balcony for the primary suite.

By the way, the primary bathroom may have the best view in the house.

Along with a loft and flexible bonus room, there are four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. In total, this home is 3,200+ square feet.

It’s located in the Blue Ribbon Broadneck school district – one of the top 25 in the entire state. Washington DC, Baltimore, and BWI are a short drive away.

428 Schoolers Pond Way is an awesome opportunity to live on the water for well under $2 million. Contact Brad Kappel for your private tour today.

LOCAL BUSINESS

AAEDC expands two initiatives

The Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation (AAEDC) does great stuff for small businesses. And the expansion these programs is especially great news for minority-owned, woman-owned, and veteran-owned businesses:

  • AADEC will offer a Spanish-language version of its popular Inclusive Ventures Program in 2024. This 8-week online course trains and mentors small businesses.

  • AADEC also launched the VOLT Microloan Fund. The fund offers loans up to $50k to businesses facing financial challenges. The VOLT Fund, which loans $25k to $500k, is already successful. It’s directed $19,188,277 to 151 businesses since 2013.

Where does the money come from? VOLT is funded by a sliver of the profits from MD casinos.

A cannoli and a cupcake walk into a bar. . .

Pastry trends come and go. Remember cronuts (croissant donuts)? What about duffins (donut muffins)? Well, Mangia Baby Cupcakes is onto something new: cannoli cupcakes.

This Annapolis-based bakery just opened to put their unique spin on Italian treats. And although they don’t have a storefront(no relation to the Mangia on Main), you can order for pickup or find them at 49 West and Metropolitan. Unless Scoop gets there first. . . đŸ§

Foodies, take your mark, get set . . . Eat!

Maryland Restaurant Week is underway. Now through Sunday (9/24), restaurants have special menus and dishes. Miss Shirley’s Cafe has a 2-course meal for $25, Middleton Tavern has special menu items, and there’s lots more. P.S. This is not to be confused with Annapolis Restaurant Week, which happens in February 2024.

Wanna know why the Ravens haven’t won a Super Bowl in over 10 years?

Wanna know why the Ravens haven’t won a Super Bowl in over 10 years? We’re not a team – not like the Chiefs are. But there’s one thing Coach Harbaugh could have them do to change that, and it’s not bowling night…

It’s DodgeBow, right here in the Annapolis area. Imagine dodgeball, but even more thrilling because you’re using bows and Soft-Tipped arrows – that's exactly what it is! If you’re not sure, ask Bean Rush Cafe and Shore United Bank if it worked for their teams.

The first 3 companies to tell them they came from Scoop get a whopping $100 off, book by 10/31/23! Ready to take your team to the next level?

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

West Annapolis Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest, also known as “It’s Ok to Beer Fest.” People all over the world are celebrating and it’s West Annapolis’ turn this Sunday.

There’s food, beer, music, shopping, and fun. And a little tip: if you’re doing Scoop’s scavenger hunt, this might be a great place to find Ryan and Marianne for some major points. But you didn’t hear that from me. 11 AM – 4 PM on 9/24.

Save this Date: Quiet Waters Park Fall Farm Frolic

Did you know Quiet Waters Park used to be a working farm? At the family-friendly Fall Farm Frolic, you’ll learn all about the plants, animals, and people that used to live there. For example there used to be about 500 cows.

Like all good frolics, there’s apple bars and ice cream at the end. Meet at the Blue Heron parking lot. Frolicking is free but park admission fee is still required. October 7, 10–11 AM.

Last call: Bay Bridge Paddle đŸ›ś

The Bay Bridge Paddle is this Saturday (9/23) at Sandy Point State Park. That leaves you with 1 day to register and 2 days to start training* for the elite 9 mile paddle race. So get to it.

*Just kidding, beginners should probably paddle the intermediate 5k or recreation 1 mile course instead. But if you do sign up for 9 miles last minute, just know that Scoop is not liable for any injuries – to your body or your ego.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.

CIVIL NEWS

Grant brings bikeway dream 30% closer

Wouldn’t it be sweet if you could zip downtown to Quiet Waters Park (and back) by bike? MDOT just blessed Annapolis with a $224,000 grant to make that happen.

Conceptually, the Bay Ridge Avenue Bikeway Path starts at 6th Street in Eastport and follows Bay Ridge Avenue all the way to Hillsmere Drive. But the recent grant only kicks the project to the design phase and more funding is needed. This is only enough to complete about 30% of the planning.

Last chance: 🔮 Peer into Annapolis’ future

What will Annapolis look like in 20 years? The City spent 3 years dreaming up that answer and the result is the draft Annapolis Ahead 2040 Comprehensive Plan. It’s live now and open for public comment — but hurry because the comment period closes this Thursday (9/21). Scroll through each section to submit a comment or see what your neighbors are saying.
