Sailboat show, the Tug's almost here, boards and bubbly...

Good morning, Annapolis. Naptown Scoop is actually not free. It doesn’t cost money. And we can’t make sure you pay; that’s why we call this the gentlemen’s agreement and ladies’ understanding. But if you like reading this newsletter, please “pay” for it by telling all your friends about it.

Alright, on to the Scoop.

P.S. Happy birthday to Sarah Goodall!

THE DIGEST

It’s on the house

Taking tests isn’t anyone’s idea of fun. So requiring students to pay for tests? That’s cruel and unusual punishment. AACPS agrees and has announced it will again cover certain exam, assessment, and certification costs for high school students for the next school year. See which ones.

Want to give blood last minute?

Like today kinda last minute. One. PT’s mobile blood drive has a few open spots left and since it’s hosted by the Anne Arundel Medical Center, all the blood stays right here in town. Sign up now.

We ❤️ our libraries

Love libraries? So do the 380 people who raised $141,000 at the For the Love of the Library fundraiser on September 22. That chunk o’ change will support 16 branches of AACPL. Did you miss the party? There’s always next year: September 27, 2024.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

The Ultimate Fall Activity Guide gets even more ultimate

We just added a bunch of new stuff to our Fall activity guide like the Naval Academy’s legendary Halloween concert, fall festivals on West Street and Maryland Avenue, and much more. Check it out!

The Tug approaches

The longest international tug of war over water in the world is just 22 days away. It's Annapolis vs. Eastport in the greatest showdown since Derek Zoolander challenged Hansel to a runway walk-off.

No idea what we’re talking about? About 25 years ago, Annapolis closed the Eastport Bridge for “repairs.” Eastport residents, ever mischievous, promptly “seceded” from Annapolis and declared war. Tug of war that is. . .

On November 4, The Tug returns with 33 tuggers to a team, 2 sides of the creek, and 1 raucous good time had by all. Call it a nostalgic reenactment, a serious battle of strength, or an excuse to day drink. All are correct.

Volunteers, food vendors, and merchants are still needed. And stay tuned as we share more about how you can pull the rope. Since 1997, the tug has raised over half a million dollars for local nonprofits.

Art @ the Park

This weekend! It’s the annual art fest from the Friends of Quiet Waters Park. Don’t miss fabulous art on display, food trucks, and live music. You can’t get more Georges Seurat than that. Saturday (10/14) and Sunday (10/15) 10 AM–4 PM. Regular Quiet Waters Park admission applies: $6 per car.

Location: Visitor and Blue Heron Centers, Formal Garden (between the two centers), and the Heron Statue Patio.

You can’t rain on our parade

. . . Well, you can. But we’ll just change our plans. That’s what happened to Fall Fest at Annapolis Town Center. And it will probably happen to other events this weekend too, so stay vigilant.

Fall Fest is now on Sunday (10/15) from 12–3 PM, not Saturday. Pick your own pumpkin, make s’mores, explore a hay maze, and more. The first 600 kids get a free gift if you donate canned goods to the Food Bank. Fall Fest is free but registration is required.

Day of the Dead @ Maryland Hall

For the fourth year in a row, the City of Annapolis will host a Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead festival at Maryland Hall. It’s a free event packed with outdoor activities, food, local vendors, and special performances. Come early to get a sugar skull face painting! 10/29 4–9 PM outside of Maryland Hall. Learn more.

💀 What’s a sugar skull?! It’s a skull made from sugar that represents a departed soul. Loved ones leave them at graves or altars. You’ll also see them painted on living faces in bright colors during Dia de los Muertos.
