⚽ Annapolis Blues win Mid-Atlantic Conference

Saturday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium felt like a movie. Blues forward Gordon Bernlohr scored in the first half to take a 1–0 lead. Midfielder Jackson Ruckman got ejected early in the second half because of two yellow cards. Thanks to the Blues playing man down, Alexandria tied the game about 10 minutes later.

Hope of victory returned when Alexandria earned a red card of their own shortly after the goal. But with a late goal on a penalty kick, Alexandria looked like they’d trapped the Blues for good. Superstar striker Jacob Murrell had other ideas.

With barely any stoppage time remaining, Jacob ripped a goal off a throw-in that sent the stadium into a frenzy. By now, rain had started to fall but nobody was leaving.

After two tense but uneventful overtime periods, the game went to penalty kicks.

With one kick remaining per team, the tally was 3–2 in favor of the Blues. Make the next shot and the game’s over. And who else to take that final shot but Jacob Murrell?

He buried the shot and the stadium erupted. The Blues’ incredible inaugural season lives on.

The Blues now advance to the East Region Semifinals to face West Chester United SC in Montclair, NJ at 4 PM this Friday (7/21). It’s only 3.5 hours from Annapolis. . . .

SPONSORED BY MURTHY FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY

Dr. Namita Murthy is pleased to introduce FaceTite. In fact, she’s the only plastic surgeon in Annapolis offering FaceTite. So, what is FaceTite?

Think of FaceTite like a facelift without big incisions.

For a normal facelift, Dr. Murthy cuts in the hairline near your temple and around your ear to the lower scalp. She redistributes fat and tissue, redrapes the skin, and trims the excess. Very safe, but still major surgery.

With FaceTite, Dr. Murthy makes a series of pinhole incisions – so small they don’t even need stitches. She first removes any excess fat and then uses radiofrequency waves (which also stimulate collagen production) to tighten and remodel skin. It’s done under local anesthesia with minimal recovery time.

FaceTite is a major breakthrough in facial contouring. Nothing else this minimally invasive even comes close to matching facelift results the way FaceTite does.

If your face and neck aren’t as tight as you’d like, schedule a comfortable and personalized consultation with Dr. Murthy today.

Also follow Dr. Murthy on Instagram @drnamitamurthy for more information and future specials!

THE DIGEST

St. John’s College smashes fundraising goals

Outside the box thinking is par for the course at St. John’s College. But in 2018, they did something radical even by St. John’s standards. They cut tuition prices by 33%. Last year, St. John’s distributed $9 million in financial aid on the Annapolis campus – with less than 500 students.

New funds from the Freeing Minds giving campaign should only increase that number. To further its mission of transitioning from a tuition-based college to a philanthropy-based college, St. John’s set the Freeing Minds giving campaign goal at $300 million. $325 million if everything went well. And everything went well.

The college just announced that Freeing Minds raised over $326 million. And while one $50 million gift from alumni Warren and Barbara Winiarski is the largest the college has ever received, 96% of the 7,300 donations were less than $5,000.

🎵 Dream job for symphony lovers

Is this you? You know which Beethoven song starts with “DUN DUN DUN DUNN.” (His 5th.) You can spell “Rachmaninoff” or “Shostakovich” in your sleep. You rock at music trivia but you kill at fundraising and nonprofit management.

Was this music to your ears? You could be the new Executive Director for Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. The ASO is searching nationwide and taking applications through August 11. Apply here.

Last call for Annapolis Go

Annapolis Go is going, going . . . gone. 👋 Now that the Hillman Garage is open again, it’s a wrap for Annapolis Go. Today is the last day to grab uber-cheap rides (lowercase intentional). The transportation department is reviewing bids to relaunch a ride-share program in early fall.

🥍 Severna Park boys lacrosse coach resigns

After 7 seasons and 6 state championships, Dave Earl has resigned from coaching the Severna Park High School boys lacrosse team to spend more time with his family. Severna Park Athletic Director Dave Kauffman is looking for a new coach but to all the MD 3A coaches who think they might actually have a chance this year, remember that Coach Earl sat out the 2021 season and the Falcons still won state. They’re on an impressive seven-year state championship streak. ($)

Basketball’s best-kept secret

Truxtun Park is no secret. But you might not know it’s the home of the Annapolis Summer Basketball League. The courts are stacked with vets and new blood – some as old as 41, some half that – and the team names are just as fun. At the top of the league, Acme Hoops is on fire 🔥

ESPN is great but this is free Tuesdays and Fridays through July 21. Food trucks and entertainment show up too. View the schedule and standings.
