City leaders reveal City Dock Park plans

Mayor Gavin Buckley, Director of Public Works Burr Vogel, and Contrast & Co. founder Dharma Pachner gave a preview of the City Dock renovation Wednesday night. The meeting room at the Waterfront Hotel was full and about 100 people tuned in on YouTube.

The renovation will kill two birds with one $59 million stone – sea level rise and beautifying downtown Annapolis.

First, sea level rise. Burr Vogel detailed plans to raise the area around City Dock to withstand 8 feet of tidal rise. Some parts will be permanently raised to 8 feet. Others will be raised 5 feet permanently with deployable barriers for the other 3 when needed.

Deployable flood barriers in the Netherlands similar to what Annapolis plans to use at City Dock

Second, beautifying Annapolis. While it’s clear the best public waterfront space in Annapolis won’t be a parking lot anymore, it’s not clear what it will be. This was presented as the site plan last night but Mayor Buckley repeatedly said the park’s design is not final.

One thing that was clarified: timing.

Light construction is scheduled to start in March 2024. The “bulk of the work” will happen between the fall boat shows (October 2024–October 2025). And the remainder of the work will be “less impactful.”

When it’s all said and done, the city expects this to be a three-year project.

Stay tuned. You’ll be hearing a lot more about this in the Scoop.

The cutest calendar money can buy 📅 🐶

Jay Fleming shoots the Chesapeake Bay. David Sites shoots the Thomas Point Lighthouse. Danielle Press shoots the dogs of Annapolis. For four years now, Danielle has created an adorable calendar featuring Annapolis’ four-legged residents in our most beautiful places. How she gets them to stand still for the photos I do not know; her treat budget must be ridiculous.

Proceeds from calendar sales and sponsorships support the SPCA – an especially important cause this year as the organization’s main shelter was destroyed by a storm last year. Pre-orders are open now. Make sure to order before December 1 to be part of the first print run!

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Slaughter Across the Water

The wildest war in Annapolis since 1812 is going down this weekend. It’s Annapolis vs. the Maritime Republic of Eastport in the longest international tug of war over water in the world. Confused? Basically teams of 33 people will line up on Third Street in Eastport and Susan Campbell Park in Annapolis and pull until everyone falls in the water. Just kidding. There’s a ribbon on the rope so we know who wins.

It’s one of the greatest Annapolis traditions and its future is uncertain because of the City Dock renovation so don’t miss it. Pulling starts at the crack o’ noon on Saturday (11/4) but there will be pre-gaming and after-partying too. We’ve got everything you need to know in our Ultimate Tug Guide.

Shake it off at Prism

We just discovered this hot new singer Taylor Swift. Heard of her? Just kidding, Swifties are having the year of their lives and Prism Annapolis is here for it.

That’s why they’re throwing a Taylor Swift Party tonight (11/3) that generously supports Annapolis Hope. This fanbase spans all ages so Prism has it covered. From 4–8 PM, Swifties under 21 can enjoy Taylor's music and videos, bracelet making, cotton candy, prizes, games, and more. Then from 9 PM–midnight for 21+, you get the same but with the addition of alcoholic drinks. Get tickets.

Navy Football Podcast: Temple preview 🎙️🏈

After three home games in a month, we’ve gotten pretty spoiled having Navy football almost every weekend. The Mids are heading to Philly this weekend to play Temple and are hoping to improve back to a .500 record. Navy is favored by 6.5 points, ESPN’s matchup predictor gives them a 71.5% chance to win, and Temple has yet to win a conference game.

Navy football experts Bill Wagner, Keenan Reynolds, and Eric Kettani met up earlier this week to discuss what they’re hoping to see from Navy this Saturday on our Navy Football Podcast. Click here to listen on Apple, Spotify, and more.

Severna Park field hockey overcomes early deficit to win region championship

On Halloween, Severna Park field hockey beat South River 4–2 to earn a 3A East Region I Championship. It wasn’t a great start though; the Sea Hawks scored just 39 seconds in. The Falcons answered however by scoring four straight goals thanks to Kelsey Rowe, Sydney Day, Hannah Pope, and Noel Stefancik. Ava Zimmerman had two assists.

As a former Falcon field hockey player, I have one thing to say. “F.A.L.C.O.N.S. Falcons are the very best.”

In all seriousness, field hockey is serious business in Anne Arundel County. Congrats to Coach Shannon Garden and the girls. Scoop wishes you the best of luck as you make your 35th visit to the state quarterfinals this week at Oakdale. –LBM

Navy men’s soccer heads to Patriot League tournament ⚽

Wednesday’s draw against Lafayette means Navy men’s soccer finished the regular season with a 6-7-5 record. That’s good enough to make the Patriot League Tournament this weekend. Unfortunately, only one team’s seeded lower than Navy, #6 American University — meaning the Mids have likely played their last game in Annapolis this season.

They face #4 Colgate Saturday night in New York. Navy played Colgate once this year, emerging with a 1–0 victory last weekend – also in New York. Let’s go Navy! ($)
