THE DIGEST

2025 All-County boys lacrosse team đŸ„

As promised, here’s the Capital Gazette 2025 All-County boys lacrosse team. Spalding spent most of May ranked No. 1 nationally by Inside Lacrosse, USA Lacrosse, and Sports Illustrated. That’s reflected in four first team All-County selections + Player of the Year Robby Hopper. Severna Park captured its ninth straight state title and is well represented with three players. Broadneck and South River also had multiple first team All-County picks.

Severna Park’s Bob Zichelli was named Capital Gazette boys lacrosse Coach of the Year. He dedicated the state championship to his late son, Kevin, who died in 2022 from injuries sustained during an explosion at work.

One more cheer for spring All-County teams (linked below), players, and coaches:

⚟ Baseball: Broadneck hit it outta the park with Mike Swick and Matt Skrenchuk as player and coach of the year, respectively.

đŸ„Ž Softball: Northeast duo Junior shortstop Brynn Jones and Coach Joe Hart took top honors.

đŸ„ Girls Lacrosse: Severna Park’s Maria Bragg, a junior and Florida commit, earned Player of the Year. Spalding’s Tara Shea was Coach of the Year. ($)

Annapolis Named #5 on CNN’s Best Towns to Visit in 2025

If you’re seeing an influx of tourists at City Dock, there might be good reason: following the incredible New York Times piece written by local Charles Babington with stunning photos by Michelle Gustafson, other media outlets are getting in the game and listing off all our outstanding features. Recently, CNN sat down for a beer at Middleton’s Tavern and got the skinny on what makes us so special, including our maritime heritage, multifaceted historical legacy, and, of course, crabs. Not to miss out on the action, Southern Living refreshed a piece from a few months ago highlighting the 15 Best Things to do in Annapolis, stating that we’ve “mastered the whole Southern hospitality thing.”

Well, I do declare.

Annapolis wins The Admiral’s Cup

The Baltimorons among us will recognize the name The Admiral’s Cup: the Charm City watering hole has been a center point of the Fells Point barhopping scene since the 80s. Now, Atlas Group is bringing the Cup to Annapolis, using the Stevens Hardware building on the corner of Dock Street as its second location. The renovation plans to honor the historic nature of the building, utilizing both floors for dining and live music. Doors are expected to open this summer, but this is Annapolis. . . So expect a few delays.

We’re 98th! (But we still Beat Army)

Navy Athletics was recently ranked 98th out of 365 schools in the Learfield Directors Cup, a list of the top colleges and universities with the most successful athletic programs across several disciplines (just not water polo, unfortunately). That’s an impressive finish for the Midshipmen, who beat out Army West Point at 103rd and Air Force at 105th. The University of Texas will take home this year’s trophy.
