Local author wins Brewington Prize, Whoâs running for City Council?, Pumpkin Patch Returns...
TOGETHER WITH
Good morning, Annapolis. An errant ball from a summer league baseball game in Silver Spring hit a firefighterâs vehicle at the station next to the field on Thursday. So he did what any mildly infuriated man with access to nearly unlimited water pressure might: hosed down the field. Game canceled. If pettiness were a sport, weâd have a new state champ.
In todayâs Naptown Scoop:
Local author wins Brewington Prize
Whoâs running for City Council?
Pumpkin Patch Returns
Letâs get to it.

THE DIGEST
Wohlsen Construction to head up Edgewater Rec Center đ§
The future Edgewater Recreation Center officially has a contractor: Wohlsen Construction. Design firm Becker Morgan Group and Cap Ex Advisory Group will also help with the project. With a projected start by spring 2026, the estimated $14.6 million project will take what is currently a Halloween superstore (because what else would it be in the interim?) and turn it into a rec center with a gymnasium, multipurpose courts, dance and fitness studios, and an indoor playground. Bonus: Preliminary plans show that the renovation wonât require constructing any new lots or buildings. (But when itâs done, you probably wonât even rec-ognize the old Halloween store.) ($)
The first woman to serve as USNAâs superintendent, Vice Admiral Yvette Davids, is leaving her position before her three-year term is up. She stepped into her role in January 2024, and her early departure is nontraditional in another way â federal law dictates, in addition to serving for three years, superintendents retire after their term. So, where is Davids heading next? Pending a waiver to Congress and their approval, sheâll be on the Chief of Naval Operations staff at the Pentagon. Navy Secretary John Phelan praised her for the way she âled with distinction.â Sheâll be replaced by Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Michael Borgschulte. If confirmed, Borgschulte will be the first-ever Marine Corps officer to be USNA superintendent, a role traditionally filled by a Navy admiral. ($)
Annapolis has another award-winning author in its literary circle: David Gendell recently received the Brewington Book Prize for his 2024 release, The Last Days of the Schooner America. The awards committee praised David â who is also a sailor â for âblending rich archival detail with firsthand accountsâ to tell the story of the famous 1851 schooner called America, which enjoyed a racing career before serving in World War II. This makes the book an ideal fit for the Brewington Book Prize, which recognizes the best books on maritime history related to the Chesapeake.
Rather than buying on Amazon, we encourage you to use Bookshop which offers the convenience of online shopping while still supporting local businesses. Just remember to pick your favorite Annapolis bookstore before ordering. It costs a tiny bit more ($6.50 for Daveâs book) but we think itâs well worth it.
