Featured fundraiser: Marshall Hope, the nonprofit behind Annapolis Hope

It takes a village. I get by with a little help from my friends. Teamwork makes the dream work. Whatever pithy phrase you prefer, as Jack Johnson sings, we’re better together. Marshall Hope Corporation stepped up to be the official nonprofit partner when Annapolis Hope was born. Now we’re helping them with their own fundraiser.

Marshall Hope is hosting their Hope For the Community fundraiser next Friday not only to raise money for their Food and Baby Pantry and Marshall Learning Center but also to share their mission with the Annapolis community. We hope to see you in West Annapolis on Friday, November 17 from 7–10 PM. Click here to buy tickets.

Beep, Beep 🚌

The Anne Arundel County Office of Transportation announced a few upgrades to our county bus system yesterday:

  • The free Passio GO app allows transit users to see real-time bus locations, schedules, and ETAs.

  • Free Wi-Fi on all buses (side note: all county buses are fare-free)

  • Five new state-of-the-art shelters with accessible and comfortable seating, charging ports, solar-powered lights, and trash cans.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in schools. . .” 🧘

They didn’t name her Teacher of the Year for nothing. Mary Kay Connerton, a health and wellness teacher at Annapolis High School, showed off her signature wellness program in front of some special guests this week. She led a guided yoga session and discussion on mental health with Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, AACPS Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell, and several Board of Education members in attendance.

Dr. Bedell said, “I’ve never seen anything like this in schools and I’ve been in this business for 24 years.”

🏆 Mary Kay was 2022–2023 AACPS Teacher of the Year, 2023–2024 Maryland Teacher of the Year, and is now up for National Teacher of the Year. Go Mary Kay! ($)

CIVIL NEWS

First amendments made on affordable housing bill

A new bill in the County Council wants developers to set aside homes for people with moderate incomes. That bill was discussed and amended after its first public hearing this week. Among the amendments: raising the number of affordable units a larger development must offer. Some County Council members are concerned that even if the bill passes, current zoning laws would make it impossible for developers to take advantage of. This was the bill’s first round of amendments and it will surely see a few more. ($)

Puzzling parking to get a second look

City Council unanimously passed a resolution to look into the Noah Hillman Garage’s concession agreement. They want to find solutions to a complex payment system they say is discouraging people from using the garage. Yesterday, the finance and transportation committees met with Premium Parking (Hillman’s operator) to learn more. We’ll share more updates as we know them. Call us your #1 source for parking news. Call us anything you want. Just don’t call us late for dinner. ($)
