A change to our referral program

Since the beginning, sharing Naptown Scoop with 3 friends meant a birthday shoutout at the top of this newsletter. And we’ve had a great run with over 300 shoutouts. But it’s time for a change.

From now on, the reward for sharing the Scoop with 3 friends is access to our invite-only Facebook group, the Inside Scoop. This raises 2 questions.

What if I already earned a birthday shoutout but haven’t gotten it yet? Don’t worry. You’ll still get it.

What if I still want a birthday shoutout? We’re working on a way to keep birthday shoutouts in the Scoop and will have news on this soon.

THE DIGEST

Giant indoor park coming to Edgewater

Sorry, Spirit Halloween — Rec & Parks is officially claiming the former Giant Food in Edgewater. County Executive Steuart Pittman announced last week that the county is buying the 5-acre property with plans to turn it into an indoor recreational facility. Details about what it will look like are forthcoming. Rec & Parks has requested funding for it in the FY25 Capital Budget.

Avoid listeria. Check your salad kits

Time to go check your fridge. Did you pick up a Marketside Southwest Chopped Kit or Bacon Ranch Crunch Kit from Walmart recently? Might be a good idea to throw them out. Or at least check them out. There’s a national recall for containing cheese that may be contaminated with listeria. You can return the kits for a refund if the UPC numbers and sell-by dates match those in the recall.

How does the Fleet Reserve Club fit into the new City Dock?

It’s pretty safe to say nobody wants to see downtown Annapolis flood again like it did last month. Some businesses are still recovering from the damage. So while the Annapolis Planning Commission works toward a redevelopment plan for City Dock, the Fleet Reserve Club has agreed to join the effort. The Fleet, as it’s known to members, has agreed to raise the bulkhead of its Ego Alley facing property. However, there are no official plans, and who will pay for what is unclear. ($)

The Banneker-Douglass-????? Museum

The Banneker-Douglass Museum in downtown Annapolis could be getting a new name soon: that of renowned Maryland abolitionist Harriet Tubman. She escaped slavery on the Eastern Shore in 1849 and returned several times to help others escape along the Underground Railroad. Now the Maryland Senate wants to make Tubman’s legend anything but underground. A unanimously passed bill will add Tubman’s name to the 40-year-old Banneker-Douglass Museum in downtown Annapolis. A companion bill still needs to pass the House which seems likely. ($)

🔍 The current names on the museum are that of mathematician Benjamin Banneker and abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass, both of whom were born in Maryland.
