🍦Crabcake review database

Back to school events, parent-plebe weekend, professional karaoke night...

Good morning, Annapolis. Just two more Tides and Tunes concerts at the Annapolis Maritime Museum this summer. Tonight is Loose Ties (one of Scoop’s favorites). See you there at 7 PM.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • Scoop’s official crabcake review database

  • Back to school events

  • Professional karaoke (it’s not what you think)

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Parent-Plebe weekend

Today (8/10) through Sunday (8/13) is Parent-Plebe Weekend. Parents and guardians of the class of 2027 last waved goodbye to their kids on June 29 when they marched inside Bancroft Hall on Induction Day. Now, they have the weekend to watch them emerge as young adults – with new haircuts, new clothes, and (lots of) new discipline.

I’m a parent → Find the full schedule here.

I’m a Mid → Here’s Scoop’s official ranked database of crabcake reviews because you know Mom and Dad are paying 😉

I’m not a Mid or a parent → The action happens on the Yard but you might notice more vehicle and foot traffic downtown. And definitely call your favorite restaurants to see if there’s a long wait.

🍎✏️ 18 days until the school bell rings

That’s right, school’s back on August 28 and 84,000 students are expected to start in AACPS classrooms. Big emotions happen this time of year. (We see you, teachers, parents, and students!) Luckily you can head to a back-to-school event to feel more prepared. See the full list of dates and times here.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

🎤 Professional Karaoke Night

It’s not exactly as it sounds. Yes, there’s karaoke. But no, you don’t have to be professional at it. Maryland Hall’s new networking series lets working professionals (not karaoke professionals) connect and gain confidence as they sing karaoke. Learn more and RSVP here. Thursday (8/10) 6–8 PM. 801 Chase St, Annapolis, MD 21401

And yes, there is such a thing as a professional karaoke singer.

Root, root, root for the Scoop team 🏓

The inaugural Blue Crab Classic Pickleball Tournament kicks off tonight (8/10) at Ball at the Mall. First up, the corporate challenge. Watch as employees trade corporate jargon for pickleball lingo (“Let’s circle back and synergize on that later”) and face off against other professionals. The challenge is full but Team Scoop would love your cheers!

The tournament (a Chamber of Commerce x Peake Social partnership) continues with men’s and women’s singles on Friday, men’s and women’s doubles on Saturday, and mixed doubles on Sunday. It’s not too late to register.

Weekend preview

👻 🍸 Spirits & Spirits. During this Watermark tour, you’ll hear spooky stories as you travel by foot and boat. Add some “spirit” with beverages during the cruise. Friday (8/11) from 7:30–9:10 PM. Get tickets.

👩‍🌾 Wildberry Field Market. 50+ local businesses and makers pack the field at Wildberry Farm for a charming market Saturday (8/12) from 9 AM–1 PM (rain date: same time Sunday). See the lineup. 1047 Saint Stephens Church Rd, Crownsville, MD 21032.

🏎️ Carriages on West Street car show. “Carriages” is just a nod to days gone by – this show is all Corvettes now. American muscle from the 50s to the 2020s packs West Street on Sunday (8/13) 9 AM–1 PM. It’s too late to showcase your car, but it’s free for spectators to ooh, ahh, and drool.

Save this date: Serenade at Sea

All the joy of the ocean, minus the sunscreen. Annapolis Chamber Music Festival presents Serenade at Sea, an afternoon of chamber works by Robert Planel, Teresa Carreño, and Kevin Puts. Each piece is inspired by the ocean. 8/20 at 3 PM, St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Get tickets.

EXTRA SPRINKLES

Back to School Blues? Not Here! 😅

Hey there, parents! The school bell's about to ring and we know that sinking feeling — the kids aren't exactly jumping for joy (although maybe you are!). Why do we accept that school has to be painful and boring? Acton Academy Annapolis is rewriting the rulebook: Passive sitting and listening. Hands-on projects. Limited recess. Lots of outdoor play. School like a factory. School like an adventure! Ready to rediscover a love of learning? Click here to learn more.*
