Crabcake Review S3E7: Light House Bistro 🦀

Another Friday, another crabcake review. But this episode is a bit different. Because we ate crabcakes for a cause. The Light House Bistro isn’t your typical restaurant; it gives people with employment barriers the opportunity to learn new skills, develop a resume, and earn a living wage. Nothin’ like a feel-good ‘cake. 🦀

Check out Episode 7 to see the scores on this XL, reasonably-priced crabcake. And you’ll get to meet not one, not two, but three special guests in this episode!

THE DIGEST

Major Stories

Just your typical nautical week in Annapolis + an Indiana Jones moment. JK, nothing about our major stories this week was typical.

🛶 Kids on the Creek is back: A lot of you were excited about Kids on the Creek returning on Saturday, August 24. Us too. But one important thing, we got the location wrong . . .

It will be at the Eastport Yacht Club. Although Truxtun Park hosted it for many years, the park’s water access remains closed. Now, the Spa Creek Conservancy collaborates with Eastport Yacht Club to continue the tradition at a new location. Sorry about that.

🛥️ Iconic local superyacht sinks: Lovebug, a 37-meter superyacht that’s regularly docked in our harbor, sank Saturday at the mouth of the West River. Rescuers saved all 5 people onboard. Reports indicate that the vessel started taking on water, prompting the captain to steer towards shallow water which likely avoided a much worse outcome.

🦷 Annapolis is having an Indiana Jones moment: To address drainage issues at the Hammond-Harwood House, 4 dry wells are being installed, giving archaeologists a chance to dissect the dirt as they dig. EAC Archaeology has discovered bits of pottery, sewing needles, a porcelain doll’s head, a toothbrush, a human molar, and a late 18th-century ammunition piece. Found artifacts could eventually be displayed in the museum.

Top clicks of the week 🏆

Shop with a Cop 🛍️👮‍♂️

Yesterday, the Annapolis Police Foundation held its annual “Shop With A Cop.” Fifteen kids from local families visited Old Navy at Annapolis Harbour Center to buy school uniforms, socks, and other essentials. With whom? You guessed it. Cops!

Sheehy Lexus of Annapolis helped fund the purchase of a new van that the kids rode in for the trip. But there’s more to this feel-good story. The kids initially thought they’d get $100 which, as we all know, can do some serious damage at Old Navy. But Sheehy’s team added another $100 to each kids pot, for a surprise total of $200!

Staffing outlook for AACPS 🍎

The countdown to the first day of school is on. (It’s August 26, ICYMI.) Your kids might be feeling nervous, but leaders of AACPS are not. Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell expressed optimism about the fact that there are far fewer teacher vacancies this year than recent years.

As of two weeks ago, there were 146 teacher vacancies and no bus driver vacancies. Compare that to 247 teacher and 20 bus driver vacancies last year. He believes these improved numbers show that AACPS is doing a better job of taking care of (and ultimately retaining) teachers and staff. ($)

Where were we Wednesday? 📸

ANSWER: You know we love an office field trip at the Scoop. So when we walked by this VW cutie in the O’Leary’s parking lot, we just had to snap a pic. Thanks for playing and congrats to @thegiftofgabbert, @chellyhanson, and @cetzel for being the first 3 to answer correctly.

Where will we be next Wednesday? You’ll have to wait and see . . .

LOCAL BUSINESS

There’s a new hidden treasure waiting for art lovers on West Street. Pearl Oyster Gallery opened inside the Graduate Hotel, showcasing the work of talented local artisans and crafters. The gallery will feature paintings as well as jewelry, pottery, woodwork, and much more. The space will also be available in the evening for special events, art classes, and painting parties.

The Grand Opening of Pearl Oyster Gallery is Saturday, August 10th, from 5–7 PM offering refreshments, entertainment, and a Meet and Greet with the artists. After that, stop by the gallery to browse Wednesday through Sunday, 11 AM–6 PM.

Nothing in this section is sponsored. They're just the things you need to know. I'll always let you know when something's sponsored.

Happy International Beer Day from the Annapolis Golf Club!

Have you heard of the Annapolis Golf Club? It’s part of our brand new X-Golf, a locally-owned indoor golf facility with extremely realistic simulators (seriously, I have the same slice at X-Golf as an outdoor course), a full bar, and tasty food.

And speaking of a full bar, in honor of International Beer Day, they’re offering pitchers of their very own Annapolis Golf Club Light for just $17. Local favorite RAR makes it for them. And that’s not the only special right now.

In honor of the Paris Olympics, from August 1–4, the best solo score & 2-person scramble score at France’s Evian Golf Club (playable at X-Golf) will win prizes! See you at X-Golf at 167 Jennifer Road, Suite Y in Jennifer Square.

Crystal Palace triumphs in Stateside Cup ⚽️

Of the thousands of fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium this past Wednesday night, probably not many had ever seen a Premier League match before. No matter. Fans wore Crystal Palace FC red and blue and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC gold and black, to support the two English football clubs competing in the Stateside Cup.

Crystal Palace won 3-1, in a showcase of skill that enthralled the local fanbase. Here’s a cool fact about Crystal Palace: the first 2 seasons of Ted Lasso were filmed at their facilities even though as Ted said, “A palace made of crystal seems mighty fragile to me.” ($)

Getting your jersey retired is a big deal. Navy will retire the jerseys of wide receiver Ron Beagle ('56) and tackle Bob Reifsnyder ('59) at halftime of its home opener against Bucknell on August 31. Beagle (who wore No. 80) and Reifsnyder (who wore No. 58) represent two of the best of the 1950s. During that decade, Navy posted winning records in 8 seasons, won the Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl, and most importantly, dominated Army.

Ron was named a First-Team All-American in 1954 and 1955 and led Navy to a 18-7-3 record in his three seasons (1953-55). Bob was named a First-Team All-American after the 1957 season and the College Lineman of the Year by the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association. He led the Mids to a 15-2-3 record in his two seasons as Navy finished 6-1-2 in 1956 and 9-1-1 in 1957.
