Quick serve hibachi, AACPS redistricting update, KSB files for Ward 3...

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. Don’t believe anybody who says Tom Brady is at Mission BBQ tomorrow. It’s April Fool’s Day. You’re not getting tasty Texas brisket and a selfie with the GOAT. Now if they say Bill Belichick, feel free to be a little less skeptical. He is from here after all. . .

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • KSB files for Ward 3

  • AACPS redistricting update

  • Quick serve hibachi

Let’s get to it.

THE DIGEST

Fundraiser Focus: Denim & Diamonds

We’re stoked about this fundraiser for several reasons.

  1. It hasn’t happened in 6 years. There’s nothing we love more than a comeback. Like when Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters.

  2. It supports pediatric mental health at our local hospital, Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center. Of the 20,000 kids seen at LHAAMC annually, 10% need mental health care. It’s a difficult topic but it’s just as important to overall wellbeing as physical health.

  3. Naptown Scoop is a sponsor and Royal Flush is providing the facilities 🚽

If you want to support pediatric mental health at LHAAMC, we’d love to see you at Denim and Diamonds on April 26. Most tickets go to sponsors but there are a limited amount of public tickets available. Get yours here.

AACPS Redistricting Update

Anne Arundel County is growing like Michael Jordan between sophomore and junior year. But because not all areas are growing equally, some of our public schools are packed like the ‘01–03 Wizards and some are packed like today’s Wizards. So in February 2023, AACPS started its biggest redistricting ever.

Phase 1 (North County) was implemented this school year. Phase 2, which includes the schools most Naptown Scoop families attend, will be implemented next school year. The Board of Education is making the plans this year though and is seeking lots of public feedback. A consulting firm who’s worked with neighboring school districts created three scenarios which you can review here.

About 150 people attended last Tuesday’s public meeting at Southern High School. Two more such meetings are planned for April 9 and April 29 at the Board of Education HQ and Annapolis Middle School respectively. You must sign up to speak and 30 people will be chosen. If more than 30 sign up, a lottery will select the speakers.

LOCAL BUSINESS

The fastest hibachi you’ve ever seen 🍣 đŸ

Maybe it’s because I ate Sam’s Club sushi for lunch (it’s better than it sounds). Maybe it’s because I live right down the road but I’m excited for this one. Quickway Japanese Hibachi is now open at the Shoppes at Riva. This isn’t birthday dinner, catch shrimp in your mouth, Teppanyaki grill hibachi. It’s fast-casual hibachi. Think Panera, Chipotle, or Honeygrow stir fry (which is right next door). Bob Liang opened the first Quickway in Gaithersburg in 2012 and now has over 50 locations along the I-95 corridor from Richmond to Cockeysville â€“ 2510 Riva Road A105, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Dunkin’ on West Street gets a facelift ☕ đŸŠ

I have a very important question. Is Dunkin’ a donut shop or a coffee shop? They clearly want to be coffee first because of the 2018 rebrand that dropped “donuts” from its name but it’ll always be a donut shop to me. Anyhow, the remodeling of Dunkin’ on West Street is done and they want everyone to come see the next generation store. The grand reopening is this Thursday from 8:30–10:30 AM. There will be a prize wheel, Dunkin’s mascot, and most importantly, free samples – 38 West Street, Annapolis, MD 21401.

The first line of defense against mosquitoes

Spring is here. Amazing! But also, that means mosquito season is coming up. . . Did you know proper lawn care can help reduce mosquitoes? They thrive in damp, overgrown areas, so a well - maintained yard makes your lawn less inviting!

Lawn Doctor also offers fertilization & weed control, aeration, tick control, and perimeter pest control. Also 100% guaranteed. Get your free lawn evaluation today and enjoy outside to the fullest this season.

WHAT’S HAPPENIN’

Coming up this week 📅

I hope you didn’t get too used to the weekend weather because there’s precipitation on the forecast nearly every day this week. The good news is aside from today, there’s never more than a 35% chance. I like those odds. That said, probably a good idea to check the weather, call the hosts, or check social media before heading out for any of these events, ok?

Anne Arundel Asian American Festival 🌏
After a sold-out inaugural event last year, this cultural melting pot is back at the Fairgrounds and better than ever. Twice the food trucks, more artists and vendors, and representation of almost every east and southeast Asian country. GA is $15 and Early Access (which gets you in 1 hour early) is $25. Tickets 🎟️

Chicken Wing Festival 🐔
Drumsticks or flats? Dry rub or sauce? Ranch or blue cheese? You can answer life’s deepest questions this weekend at the Maryland Chicken Wing Festival, also at the Fairgrounds. No early admission here. Everyone pays $20 (except kids under 13 who are free). There’s lots of live music, a wing eating contest, a make-your-own-sauce competition, and much more. Tickets 🎟️

The Annapolis Cup 🏆
If Augusta has the Masters, Annapolis has the Annapolis Cup. Both events involve colorful clothing, hitting little balls around some grass, and a strict code of conduct. The classic USNA vs. St. John’s College croquet match is Saturday at noon. If you’re a betting person, St. John’s is a heavy favorite with a historical record of 32–8. Tickets 🎟️

Cirque De Paris đŸŽŞ
You’ve probably never heard of the Bouglione family, but they’re circus royalty in France – the birthplace of the modern circus. And starting Thursday, seventh-generation Bouglione Anouchka Bouglione is bringing her family’s circus to Annapolis. The 90-minute show includes aerialists, jugglers, tightwire dancers, magic, and more. Catch it April 3–13 at Annapolis Mall. Tickets 🎟️

Save this Date: EVFC Fire Prevention Fair 🚒

You should probably ask your kids if they want to go to this but no judgment if you’re stoked, too. The Eastport Volunteer Fire Company is holding its annual Fire Prevention Fair on April 27. You can meet firefighters, see fire trucks, watch a K9 demo, and so much more. It’s a great way to keep fire safety on your kids’ mind and have fun at the same time. And if you don’t have fun, too, we’ll give you a full refund. JK, it’s free – 914 Bay Ridge Ave, Annapolis, MD 21403.

CIVIL NEWS

KSB files to run for Ward 3

Since longtime Ward 3 Alderwoman Rhonda Pindell Charles is running for Mayor next year, Annapolis’ Ward 3 city council seat is up for grabs. And Keanuú Smith-Brown, aka KSB, just filed to fill it. KSB is a longtime community organizer and educator with lots of experience in local and state politics. He’s held campaign roles across multiple levels of government and served as the chair of the Annapolis Board of Supervisors of Elections. Smith-Brown also sits on several nonprofit boards and teaches fourth grade at Mills-Parole Elementary School.

P.S. In pre-K, KeanuĂş told his class he wanted to be President of the United States. When I was in pre-K, I wanted to be a construction worker.
